The thing with Charlotte's anger is this: she was never angry that George was "mad". She was angry because they kept her in the dark. Remember in the first episode when she kept asking about the king. "Is he smart, is he funny... is he a beast or a troll...is he slow? I can work with that." And when George asked her in the garden if it really mattered to her what the king looked like, her response was: "I do not care...what I do not like is not knowing." So Charlotte loves him but she hates the fact that they kept something so magnanimous from her.

I think Reynolds is doing his best for the King. I also really love him and Brimsley together and when they're at odds.

That scene with Brimsley answering Charlotte’s question about her daughters not marrying made it click for me. I had previously wondered why Queen Charlotte was the only one dressing so differently…even in the earlier Bridgerton seasons. Everyone else is wearing empire waist dresses and less elaborate hair. I know she’s the queen but her style didn’t seem to fit. Now to watch Queen Charlotte and see how she dressed when she and George were younger. And how older Charlotte wears shades of blue when she visits the king hoping he recognizes her 🥺🤧

Lord Danbury being done in by the D -- PICK ME UP OFF THE FLOOR 😂😂😂 I was so happy for Lady Danbury! I really hope they do a spin off about her story because I need to know her entire story (it would also let us see young Charlotte and George again). And we haven't touched on it but the actress who plays young Lady Danbury is so beautiful, like God truly has favorites! But on another note, nothing has broken me like seeing George walk back into that doctors torture chamber in a long time. Such a credit to the writing and acting of this show. Can't wait for the finale!

I would like this too. We need more of her story. And, God, yes, so beautiful.

King George III was 'mad' by all historical senses, a trait that was handed down from predecessors like King Henry VI, who thought that he was made of paper, or Henry's grandfather Charles of France, who thought he was made of glass. It's hard to know through the opacity of time but we generally assume that these men had something akin to schizo-affective disorder, dissociative disorder or bipolar disorder. It generally involved the victim having an altered perception of reality, typically in fits or episodes, after which they would return back to a calmer state of mind. While unable to rationalise what they did or felt during the 'fits', they couldn't quite shake the feeling and so episodes would crop up, typically aggravated by stress. You hit the nail on the head with Reynolds - he is purely living for the King and not the bigger picture. Personally, I think it's something really endearing. We can safely assume Reynolds has been the King's man for many years, so he's essentially watched the king grow with this affliction and has understood very keenly that this isn't something other people can know about. So his loyalties are to his one and only constant companion. When George marries Charlotte, it changes the dynamic and Reynolds finds it difficult to readjust to the new situation, but his unwavering loyalty to George is really endearing.

Yes, except I'd correct this a little. Schizoaffective disorder is when a person has a combination of a mood disorder and traits of Schizophrenia, and the most common mood disorder for this IS Bipolar disorder (so it's more than just having the episodes of hallucinations and delusions). Just a correction on the wording: Id refrain from saying "victim" because this is a disorder that cannot be cured and has to be lived with; you can just refer to them as the person with the disorder. A reason why the specific condition he lived with is so divisive is because without medication (overall treatment) & once the person is older, Schizoaffective looks identical to dementia. It is literally called a "dementia mimic". And on top of that, some people with bipolar disorder will experience delusional thinking, or disassociation during manic or depressive episodes. For those who don't know, disassociating is where you feel (emotionally) disconnected in some way from your body or current experience. It's also split into two different subtypes of sorts: depersonalization (like looking in a mirror and not recognizing yourself) and derealization (example: my everyday surroundings seem foreign to me even though I should recognize them). Anyone can experience it at times, like when in a traumatizing situation or when triggered to feel like they are in a traumatizing situation again. At least for the fictional portrayal, this definitely seems more like schizoaffective disorder. I'm a psych major and have been interested in studying this stuff since I was a kid, so I'm just putting my input out there.

Your reactions to this series are so heartfelt! I love that the Bridgerton creators saw an opportunity in the loose facts of Charlotte and George III's lives and really ran with it to tell a richer, more bittersweet love story, involving the important topic of mental illness. Other people have probably mentioned this already, but historians have surmised, based on recorded symptoms, that George's illness was likely either bipolar disorder or porphyria (a condition that damages the liver and nervous system, and can also manifest as mental illness). Both of these can cause psychotic episodes. The show depicts his episodes as being tied to stress and anxiety, and those are of course aggravating factors with most mental illnesses. The crazy thing is that he lived so long--he reigned longer than any monarch of England except for Victoria and Elizabeth II! He even outlived Charlotte, but only by a little more than a year.

I'm not sure whether this has been mentioned before, but George's mother is the Dowager Princess because she was never queen-consort. She was married to the heir to the crown, but he died before his father, the King, so George succeeded his grandfather to the throne.

As soon as I saw this show I was hoping you would react to it. You bring such wisdom and nuance to your videos and your comments at the end of episode 4 are a perfect example of that. So glad you chose to react to QC. It’s easily the best Bridgerton season imo.

I think Charlotte is just, young. she doesn't know when to pick 'fights' she's just go go go. She doesn't want to 'lower' herself to George and I do get that she's proud and that's not wrong to feel pride at all.

I am Venus makes me so emotional and I think it just hits so different as a married person. You can see Charlotte's temporary shock of "wow... what is this? What am I supposed to do? Is this how it will be for me forever? " And then just snapping into "that's my husband I am bringing him inside and the rest can wait until tomorrow"

Loved your reaction! I also shed lots of tears through out this series. Like many others, as someone who struggles with mental health issues this series hit me hard. I think with Reynolds he isn't so much keeping things to himself as protecting the King, which is ultimately his job. He has no doubt seen alot in regards to the King's illness. I think he wasn't sure if the Queen could be trusted to be understanding and discreet. Not to mention ultimately it wasn't his secret to tell and the George didn't want Charlotte to know. Lord Danbury was unfortunately a product of his times. I don't particularly care for him but unlike the Duke's father he wasn't purposefully malicious.

I actually think Charlotte being straight forward is quite good, because George is being so secretive and by confronting him he has two options, reveal himself or just keep like that. but if you obey and do what he says nothing is never going to happen😅 but i get it, Charlotte isn't calculated, she is brutally honest and we love her for that.

And of course some time around 50:02

You know, and I'm saying this during your opening, but I like many never gave Lord Danbury much thought. I can't say my opinion is changing, but I do see how the times also failed him. If he had not been conditioned to see women as lesser, he might have put more stock in his match for marriage and could have married a woman who would uplift him and potentially humble him in gentle ways. Give him some character development. Thank you for some perspective.

Well at least we can definitely say that young Lady Danbury's issues with her husband weren't just centred on his age. It must be difficult disagreeing with a lot of things with your husband but not feeling like you're able to say your disagreements out loud.

I think this show turns us all into either giggling schoolgirls huddling in a corner looking at magazines or books we were told not to look at, or gossiping aunties laughing loudly and uproariously over each others sex stories in the middle of a cafe where everyone can hear us. I mean the amount of sex jokes we all come up with just by watching this show.
