John Waters will either make you cry with laughter/joy or turn your stomach with disgust. Often simultaneously 😅 Serial Mom rides that line so well, and Kathleen Turner's face sells every bit of her crazy (I'm on her with most everything except labor day🤕). She's a murderous blonde idol, like Debbie (Joan Cusack) from Addams Family Values but motherly 🥰 Some top John Waters - Original Hairspray, Crybaby, Cecil B Demented (this one is just insane 🤪). All with Ricki Lake, who plays the daughter here. Anything earlier than Hairspray (1988) should be watched with caution. Waters is a madman and let his flag fly for a while.

Thanks, Mozy! ✂ John Waters, the writer/director of this, is one of my idols. The comedies I made in college were compared to his stuff. Mr. Waters' early work is really weird and edgy. Everything he made since HAIRSPRAY (1988) has been relatively mainstream. Yes, the Broadway musical of the same name is based on it. He did not direct the 2007 remake which was based on the Broadway version... but all of the key ingredients are still present. He even had a cameo role in it. Try to watch both versions. 🔸 Also, check out PECKER (1998), CECIL B. DEMENTED (2000) and A DIRTY SHAME (2004). If you like those, too, you might be ready for his wackier beginnings!

My favorite John Waters film is "Polyester". Unfortunately, it wouldn't be feasible to review without the Odorama card that came with the movie. During the film, a number flashes on the screen which correspond to the number on the card and you smell what's happening in the scene. The film features Divine, Edith Massey (a John Waters staple) and Tab Hunter.

Soooo happy to see you react to this underrated cult classic of a film. This movie is so good. It is so funny at times & has such great practical horror movie deaths sprinkled in it throughout.. Man! This is such a good film.. That scene in the closet is a great one that combines & blends both slasher horror (with that devil-like sneer of a smile as Mrs. Sterner slides the hangers from left to right, slowing building the suspense & slowly revealing Bev's face, before a pair of sharp scissors slams into her guts) & comedy, as when she looks down, not only is she bleeding from this scissors stab wound in her abdomen, but looking FURTHER down to her feet, we clearly see a little blood-covered mouse (that she was just complaining to her husband about) just RANDOMLY, BUT SAVAGELY, GNAWING AWAY AT HER RIGHT FOOT!😂😂 It's the little WTF? moments like THESE that makes 'Serial Mom' such a beloved film by all it's fans..
