I can't believe someone actually reacted to this gem. Thanks for doing it! I used to recommend it to reactors whenever they saw something with Lou Diamond Phillips or Edward James Olmos in it or for every Hispanic Heritage Month. I stopped doing so after a while though because I knew no one would ever react to it. It's obviously a gem but just not well known enough for most reactors. But I think part of movie reactions should be exposing the audience to hidden gems and reacting to movies you wouldn't have seen otherwise. If you search Jaime Escalante on YT you'll see how uncanny Edward's depiction of him is. He captured him perfectly. And I think they named academies and or schools after Escalante where his teaching methods were duplicated after his transformative success teaching calculus to marginalized kids from disadvantaged areas as shown in Stand and Deliver. Edward James Olmos in Blade Runner is a must-react to. Watch "The Final Cut" of Blade Runner if you do.

Mine too! Also, l normally wouldn't do this, but in the spirit of the movie, it's "a negative *times* a negative equals a positive."

Ladies, excellent pick. Forgot about this movie, not seen for a long time. Rare to have a teacher this dedicated to students. Early in movie teacher called student Johnny, maybe a habit. When one of my nieces was young , I would call her Ralph ( habit). One morning before having breakfast I said to her, " mornin' Fred'. She replied " I'm not Fred, I'm Ralph". I had a good laugh, (great memory) Enjoy your day ladies.

I’m glad someone chose to react to this movie. It’s been one of my favorite teacher movies. We watched this several times in school. I consider myself lucky to have had teachers who cared and were passionate about teaching. Those are the ones whose lessons stuck with me my entire life. Edward James Olmos has a fine movie career. But he was best known for his tv role on the iconic 80’s tv show Miami Vice. From there his movie career skyrocketed. If you wish to watch another inspirational teacher film I recommend Lean On Me (1989) starring the incredible Morgan Freeman.

Stand and Deliver was, of course, based on a real teacher and real events. I hadn't seen this movie in a very long time but I remember loving it when it came out. There's no shortage of fine Edward James Olmos performances and I see a lot of them mentioned in the comments below. I, myself, am partial to his turn as Admiral Adama in the rebooted Battlestar Galactica series that premiered in 2004.

I could never remember the name of this, but I know the movie well. It is iconic, and yet, everyone I know remembers the storyline, the actors, and the movie in general, but not the title. Back before everything was on the internet, of course.

I’m a Garfield alumni. I was a student there from 1991 to 1993 and just missed Escalante by just a year because he left in 1990. After he died they had the rosery at the same classroom were he taught his math classes. There was a lot of news media there and thousands of people including former students went to pay their respect. There was a line of people waiting to go inside that stretched around the block. I still live a block away from Garfield high school in East La

Love the fingerman math bit and the postman's in my locker. Kind of like the several tragedies coming to the actors from Boys in the Hood, the actress that was the student/waitress at her dads restaurant in Stand and Deliver, Vanessa Marquez., wound up with some issues later in life. Her family called for a welfare check on her just a few years ago, which was all caught on police body cam. She ended up pulling a bb or prop gun on the police and was lit up by them.

Hello, if you don’t mind, can you do a movie reaction on a movie called, 1492: Conquest of Paradise. Adventure/Drama (1992). It stars Gérard Depardieu, Siqourney Weaver, Armand Assante. It portrays a version of the travels to the New World by the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus and the effect this had on indigenous peoples. Directed by Ridley Scott.
