We had a guest speaker at school once who was a student of Mr. Escalante in the 90s. He ended up at MIT for his undergrad work and went to Harvard Law School. Eventually, he became a patent attorney, which is a difficult task considering you need a technical background in order to understand the complex designs and inventions that are requesting a patent.

I'm so glad you reacted to this movie. This is one of my favorite underrated films which I remember seeing in the theater in high school. Good job guys!

Good movie and reaction. Edward James Olmos is a wonderful actor. He has his hands in his waistband because that's what this teacher did. Lou Diamond Phillips is really good in La Bamba.

Glad to see another reaction to this. Okay looking it up most of the students in this seem to be so fictionalized they do not relate to any actual person. However the shy one whose Dad ran a restaurant, Ana, looks to be based on a real student who is actually named Leticia Rodriguez. In 2014 she was an electrical engineer for Honeywell. She indicated she still faces some obstacles as a woman in engineering, but she works to keep kids in school and to "keep moving forward." She has a husband and three children, one of whom was (at that time) studying music education. So fulfilling career, family, etc. Sounds like she did good. I did not find anything more recent than 2014 though. The actress who played her, named Marquez, was not so fortunate. She had varied mental health issues and was killed by police in a stand-off involving a BB gun. The police later showed, "bodycam footage from the incident, showing Marquez pleading to the officers to kill her, as well as pointing the replica gun at them." A wrongful death suit was settled.

I believe the hand in the pants thing is because the real Mr. Escalate had a long-term untreated hernia & did that to reduce the pain.

I liked Stand and Deliver and Dangerous Minds. But Hillary Swank in Freedom Writers is still my favorite movie about a teacher dedicating her all to a classroom of underserved high school students.

I absolutely love that movie. One of my favs. I really hope they react to that one. It’s such a phenomenal film. Def top of the list for similar films dealing with this topic.

This was one of the movies that made Lou Diamond Phillips stand out to me as an actor. The movie that really gave him a boost in his career was La Bamba (the Ritchie Valens story).
@jaysondixon92319 күн бұрын
Jaime Escalante, who this movie is based on, said himself that this movie is 90% truth, 10% drama. Main differences being if a student didn't know multiplication or fractions, they didn't learn calculus in one year and it wasn't a heart attack he had, but inflammation of the gall bladder.
@profanepersonality12 күн бұрын
If you see Lou Diamond Phillips & don't immediately think of the movie "Labamba" about Ritchie Valens' life, you missed a great movie; and need to rectify the situation.

Great Reaction in advance. This film is definitely a classic. Also, since y'all haven't seen it, Dangerous Minds w/Michelle Pfeiffer is absolutely worth the watch. Along with Lean on Me w/Morgan Freeman, Coach Carter w/Samuel L. Jackson, and With Honors w/Joe Pesci and Brendan Fraser. All four films are well acted, well written classics and while the subject matter is similar to Stand and Deliver, each film is very different. Hopefully y'all get a chance to watch a few. Take Care ...
