Movie note: The visual effects, especially the trench run, was done by Douglas Trumbull, who also was the visual genius behind the effects in 2001 A Space Odyssey.

The POWER of John Williams' amazing score can not be overstated. During this time, through the late eighties, he was in his prime and just about everything he touched was turned into gold. Of course everyone was at the top of their game here, to make this movie the epic that it is. Ben Burtt the genius sound designer and the cutting edge effects of Industrial Light and Magic were also part of that winning formula. A mind blowing experience for my 10 year old brain at the time!

Reading your comment again, i realized you meant something a little different than i thought. But the movie we are commenting on was in '77, and empire strikes back was made in the 70's, but not released until '80. When you said "late 80's", i thought maybe you fat fingered the 8. That was were my confusion was.

Great reaction, saw this many times in the theaters in 77 and again in 80, they brought it back before Empire, in fact our parents in 77 refused to take us any longer saying how can you watch that again. The moment the opening scene started with that Star Destroyer flying over I was hooked, great movie and great franchise. Enjoy your journey I look forward to watching it.

My favorite take on Star Wars during this December was an unexpected one, for me at least. Smb wrote that he actually thinks that the story of it is not only not made up, but true and continues to this day in reality. Meaning that the Princess story goes on with either new progeny or in spirit. After all, it is never said that this is a 'Once Upon A Time' like fairy-tale in it. It begins with: A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away. As if it were indeed real and galactic wars a common-place a long way from here, maybe 100 000 years ago or so. And we feel the impact, too.

_A long time ago, in a movie theater about 50 miles away ..._ *THERE WAS NO EPISODE TITLE* The studio didn't think this film would make much money. Lucas was crossing his fingers that it didn't bomb. For all he knew, Lucas was making one standalone movie. "Episode IV" and "A New Hope" were added in later releases, to be in line with the numbering adopted with Episode V. I first saw _Star Wars_ in 1977, at the Indian Hills Theater in Omaha, Nebraska, US (a city of about 1M). The Indian Hills was one of the last remaining Cinerama theaters in existence (it's long gone, now). Cinerama was an experimental widescreen format seen in the 1950s and 1960s. It had an extremely curved screen, such that films shot in Cinerama used _three cameras_ and _three projectors_ : one for the center of the screen and one for each side. Everything had to be constantly synchronized so that the film looked normal onscreen. If you see Cinerama films on DVD/Bluray/streaming today, it often looks distorted on the left and right. This is caused by converting a curved film to a flat screen. So there I was at the Indian Hills at the tender age of 12 -- the film's precise target demographic. The Indian Hills seated 810 patrons: 662 on the main floor and 148 in the balcony. It was completely packed, as was every screening of _Star Wars_ until the film left theaters. I'd gotten to the theater rather late, forcing me to sit in the center seat of row one. This turned out to be fantastically good bad luck. Today, the center of row one is a terrible seat due to parallax distortion. In a theater the size of the Indian Hills, that distortion didn't exist because the screen was far enough away from the seats. However, it was close enough so that it filled my field of view from top to bottom. The screen was large and curved enough so that it filled my field of view from periphery to periphery. _Star Wars_ was shot in CinemaScope, a more popular experimental widescreen format of the era. While not technically the same as Cinerama, it still lent itself well to that screen. I watched _Star Wars_ with the film filling my entire field of view from top-to-bottom and side-to-side. I didn't have to turn my head to watch it unless I wanted to, and I usually didn't. It was an astonishingly immersive experience. Not even IMAX comes close. Add to that the massive audience reaction that shouldn't be overlooked. It was a shared experience that I've only seen at _Infinity War_ and _Endgame_ on their opening nights, when there were a lot of fans present. This audience reaction happened at every screening, in every theater, everywhere in the world, until _Star Wars_ left the screens. Imagine 810 people all cheering, clapping, jumping to their feet, and occasionally crying all at once. The shared experience was amazing, as it fed on itself. No one held back, it just kept growing and growing until the destruction of the Death Star -- which prompted massive roaring from the audience. The film itself was like nothing put to the screen at that time. While cinematically based on old _Flash Gordon_ and _Buck Rogers_ movie serials of the 1930s, this was a big-budget, big-screen version like nothing anyone had ever seen before. It completely changed science fiction on the movie screen. Until that time, you occasionally got a good science fiction film, but they tended to be years apart. After _Star Wars_ , there were multiple good science fiction movies every year, a trend that continues to this very day. There would be no modern _Star Trek_ without _Star Wars_ . _Star Wars_ was such a massive hit for 20th Century-Fox that Paramount quickly looked around and said, "Aha! We have this _Star Trek_ thing that Trekkies are always saying they want more of. Let's make it into a movie!" Thus _Star Trek - The Motion Picture_ was released in 1979. Without that, there would be no _Star Trek_ today. _Star Wars_ changed filmmaking from a business perspective. The film grabbed audiences like nothing seen in the entire history of cinema. While _Jaws_ was technically the first summer blockbuster, _Star Wars_ cemented summer as the time to release action-heavy, family-friendly films. The special effects of _Star Wars_ were utterly innovative, and the tools created by the likes of John Dykstra became commonplace in films that don't even have special effects. Almost all special effects in the Original Trilogy were achieved either in-camera, with optical effects, miniatures, extremely detailed paintings, or a combination of those techniques. CGI that allows an entire film to be shot on a green screen wasn't even a glimmer in anyone's eye. In 1977, the most advanced computers were the size of an SUV and didn't have the computing power of your phone. CGI as a primary filmmaking technique wasn't popularized until _Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow_ in 2004. By then, computing power/square centimeter had skyrocketed exponentially. The special effects spawned Industrial Light and Magic, a company created and owned by George Lucas. ILM is still in existence today, constantly innovating with new technologies to create visual effects for many, many films and TV series. From its inception, ILM has been considered the gold standard of VFX companies. In short, this film was nothing like what had come before. It changed _everything about cinema_ . And I got to see it with an audience of 810, on a screen so immersive that I got nauseous during the Trench Run.

Great reaction to a classic fun film... Obi Wan/Ben Kenobi is not dead/gone, he became one (merged) with the force, remember he said to Darth Vader "If you strike me down I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine" and yes Luke can hear (and can even see) Obi-Wan....since you like like this one, you'll love the sequel Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (and yes Yoda is in that one, along with new villians & new allies and a dark secert is ultimately revealed) 😉.

Carrie Fischer (Princess Leia) said that she only agreed to that ridiculous hair style because she came in over her target weight. She was afraid they might fire her. There are so many small details in this movie. The guns in the trenches on the Death Star stop firing when their own fighters get close. When they are inside the Death Star in the elevator with Chewbacca as a prisoner they are facing the wrong way and the other side of the elevator opened. Like would happen if you hadn't been there before. Or how they can't see out of the Stormtrooper helmets very well. It makes it seem like a real world. There are tons of these small details. How the rebel ships all look old and all their equipment looks used.

A Padawan is boarding the "Tantive IV." What will this newbie make of this "old, long, character-based, jargon-filled, no-DFX" movie? 3:25 MAD magazine called it "Star Roars" for that reason. If you can read this, you don't need glasses. 5:48 Welcome to Tatooine, did you bring your own water? 6:24 A Jawa collecting scrap metal. 6:55 You are watching the George Lucre edition with DFX not seen in 1977. Imperial Storm Troopers are riding Dewbacks. 9:10 I got a "Is this all there is to Life, stuck on Tatooine for another season?" vibe in 1977. 10:18 A Krayt Dragon call. 11:45 The Jedi Light Saber, enthralling audiences for decades. 13:44 Dark Side Choke. 14:13 Imperial Storm Trooper interrogations can be...harsh. 15:03 Jedi Mind Trick. 17:32 In the original trilogy, Jabba the Hutt didn't show up until "Return of the Jedi" (1983). 18:21 Going Hyperactive, er to Hyperspace. 24:34 A Dianoga. 27:50 The Jedi consider Death to be a quaint concept. 30:48 World War II-level space combat. 32:42 A million fewer Imperial Storm Troopers in the 'verse. 33:25 Chewbacca isn't a medal collector.

Yeah okay. Hey just found your channel. The reason I watched is because I love to watch people discover Star wars. This isn't going to be short. I'm what they call a Star wars original. I saw this in the theaters at age 10 in 1977. Me and my cousin stood in line for 6 hours on Saturday to see this movie. Then we still in line for another 6 hours on Sunday to watch it again. It is so much fun to watch people and the joy in their face the first time they see this. It takes me back. Welcome to the universe and I say that because I saw the join on your face. You sweetie, have just embarked on a long and glorious journey. I've been on this journey for 45 years from a New Hope, empire, jedi, to the prequels, to the sequels, to the clone wars animated series to the rebels the animated series. Now recently mandalorian, bubba fet, and Obi-Wan series. Literally a 45-year journey. please make sure that you watch everything in sequence. Here's how that goes. Episodes four, five, six, one, two, three, the clone wars animated series, then rebels the animated series. Next the sequels episodes 7 8 and 9 which people tell you go suck but just enjoy them for what they are Star wars movies. Then you move on to the Disney series. First mandalorian and boba Fett then finish those with the Obi-Wan series. Then after that you've got andor. It goes on and on and it's all a wonderful ride. But if you watch everything in that order everything will make sense. Like I said. Welcome to the universe. If you have any questions we will answer without spoilers cuz that's just who the Star wars people are. Enjoy the journey. Can't wait to take it with you. May the force be with you always. ❤️💚☘️🇺🇦🌲🎅🦌

This is my single greatest cinema experience. I was 7. From the moment STAR WARS hit the screen to John Williams score, I was entranced. Your reaction brought me back. The following has no in-movie spoilers, but I discuss behind-the-scenes info about Star Wars films with the intent of helping you decide on where to go from here. But stop reading now if you don't want to know anything. I respect your right to go in blind. Lucas wrote Star Wars, the original trilogy. Then wrote a backstory trilogy, then debated over which to film first. He decided on episodes 4-6 because the backstory was slower paced and more political. It has changed a little in the 20+ years from original story to making it onto the screen, but I think you will like it. Generally speaking, polls show that if you were a kid when 4-6 came out, you like those best. If you were a kid when 1-3 came out, you like those best. The prequel trilogy has its detractors, but none deny it's a unified story. The new sequel trilogy, 7-9 upset almost everyone for 2 reasons: 1) Directors and writers changed with each film and didn't like where others went with it so it feels far less cohesive and more like story was just fired out of a shotgun randomly, and 2) stories came out that the new creators had an agenda to push which included destroying Luke Skywalker's image and reputation. There are many spectacular single moments in the newest trilogy, but these negative elements are definitely felt and had many previous fans walking away from the franchise. My personal suggestion would be to watch 4-6, then 1-3, then whatever 1-offs you want such as Rogue One, then watch The Mandalorian seasons which take place 5 years after Return Of The Jedi, then decide what else you want to watch. Many are going to tell you to watch The Clone Wars series. They do this for good reason, but go into that one only if you don't mind the lengthy commitment.

Trivia: When Star wars was first released in May of 1977 it was just called "Star Wars" with no number or subtitle. This was because he wasn't 100% sure if this would be a hit which would allow him to make more. Once that prospect was FIRMLY established, he rereleased it in November of that same year, this time with the "Episode IV: A New Hope" added. Who knew that he wouldn't get to the first 3 episodes until 22 years later?!

Actually, “Episode IV: A New Hope” wasn’t added to the original Star Wars until it made its debut on VHS for home video in April of 1981 as well as a theatrical re-issue. It was initially only available as a rental title until it was eventually made for sale.

Jabba actually was a human being when the scene outside the Falcon was shot. There was a human actor playing Jabba. The scene was cut from the first release, and when Lucas redid the original i to this "special edition" he restored the Jabba scene but overlaid the "slug" over the human as he felt a non-human would be more unlikely to garner any sympathy from viewers. After all, Jabba is really just doing business. Solo dumped a cargo he was smuggling for Jabba to avoid being caught with illegal goods. Jabba merely seeks payment for his loss.

Great review. Unfortunately, the "Yoda" that you put on-screen is actually Grogu, sometimes referred to as "Baby Yoda". This is a character from the Star Wars TV series "The Mandalorian", and the relationship (if any) between Yoga and Grogu is unclear. I do recommend that if you continue reviewing Star Wars, that you do it in this order: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back Episode VI: The Return Of The Jedi (then SKIP episodes 1, 2, and 3) Rogue One (a direct prequel to Episode IV) Then episodes 7, 8, and 9 And then, if you're still interested and wondering what you missed in the first 3 episodes, watch the TV series "Obi-Wan Kenobi)

Hi Olavity! I'm one of those "I was a kid when this came out" people, but unlike many of my peers, I love all of the new stuff coming out. The lore has been so expanded over the years, it's amazing. Star Wars captivated me in theaters, and I've soaked up the lore like a sponge. So, I will offer comments (without spoilers), as I do with many other reaction channels. With that said, I may answer "You'll find out later" a bit. But yes, the original release order is a great way to go, as it's how we experienced it back in 1977, 1980, 1983. Once you're done with the OT, though, you can do everything in timeline order (which is mind blowingly huge now). Also, don't discount the animated series, and the live action shows. They are integral to the overall lore, and contain tons of information. Remember, I'm here to help, and will always be polite with my answers (I'm only a 'grumpy older guy' in person). Yeah, that opening "blare" will wake you up in the morning. LOL! Also, do understand that you're watching the "post 1997" re-release and that some of the effects shots have been redone with CGI. There was no CGI back in 1977, and some of the added stuff does seem to stick out a bit. Also, one other suggestion: turn on subtitles, as that will help you to catch some of the lingo, and character names. Use whatever language you are most comfortable with. 4:28 - His name is Darth Vader, and I'll tell you that he is (more accurately was) human, but is now inside that suit that keeps him alive. As to why he's like that.... you'll find out. 8:29 - No, but they did raise him. They are his aunt and uncle. 11:20 - Telling C-3PO to not be dramatic is like telling a 3 year old to behave themselves at a funeral.... 12:30 - Don't feel bad if you need to pause it, and take notes. The exposition is quite important. 16:58 - Heh..... no, it's not Spanish, the language is called "Huttese". 24:02 - Chewy (short for Chewbacca) is a Wookie. His species is from the planet Kashyyk, and they live very long lives. In this movie, Chewy is 200 years old. 24:35 - That was called a "Dyanoga"... we learned this when the Death Star Playset came out, because one was included with it. 27:13 - There is a "reimagining" of this scene (Scene 38) that was fan made, it's outstanding, and very well done, but I don't recommend you watch it until after you've gotten to Episode III. 27:56 - Yes. Ben is actually dead. At least, in a physical sense.... however, he was quite strong with The Force. 30:28 - No, 3PO is not going with them. He's a Protocol droid, while Artoo is an "Astromech" droid. Two very different roles, but both quite useful. 33:40 - You have just taken your first steps into a larger world.

Imagine what a mind blowing experience it must have been for Princess Leia when Luke rescued her. There she is, waiting in her cell to be executed, thinking the rebellion is lost and then the door opens and she's not only being rescued but she finds out that Obi Wan AND the Death Star plans are there too! From the lowest low to the highest high in just a few short minutes. trivia: The original ending to this movie was that they would rescue Leia from the Death Star and that was it. Luckily, Brian DePalma and Steven Spielberg gave George Lucas many very good pieces of advice about how to improve the movie.

It is so refreshing seeing a reaction of this video without no knowledge of anything about it. Not even pop culture references. Release order is the best. You made a wise decision. I know of very few people (I'm sure there are some) who have watched these in the theatre's who think conological order is best. Usually it's the younger fans who think that. Not all of course. George Lucas release the prequils after the original for a reason. They were developed upon the knowledge of the originals.

Lucas wanted to make it so that chrono would be natural, but shot and edited TPM in a way that doesn't feel like an intro chapter until midway through. Heh, he changes his mind all the time. But anyways, after watching many reactions, I'd say chrono order works great with viewers already exposed to SW through popcultural osmosis. If they know The Big One or most of the characters from memes and merch, they know immediately what they're talking about in the prequels, and they're hit harder when they realize they were watching a villain origin story halfway through. But if they know nothing, release is the way to go.

This movie is the one that made it all possible. i was 3 years old in 1977 when this came out so i was pretty young, but i remember it like it was yesterday. this movie was so far above and beyond anything before it, people could not believe it. it made something lik e365 million dollars in 1977-1979 (they kept it in theaters for months and months. ) becasue people kept watching it. in fact if you take into account inflation, and only look at actaul number of tickets sold. this movie, within the USA made something likd 1.8-2 billion dollars just in the states alone in today's dollars. the only movei ever to sell more tickets (and only slightly) was 1939s gone with the wind.

The fact you know nothing about the films means you will get a thoroughly unbiased view of this saga, and will basically experience this the way those of us in the 1970s and 80s did, with fresh eyes and feelings. I think it is safe to say I can guarantee you will continue to enjoy these films, just based on your reaction to this film. Can't wait to see more! 😁

Hey, Ola! Welcome to that galaxy far, far away! Star Wars is deeply embedded in global pop culture and is one of the few franchises to shape multiple generations. Star Trek is another major one. Star Trek is genuine science fiction whereas Star Wars is more space fantasy. The first one I saw in a theater as a little boy was "Return of the Jedi" in 1983. My parents -- and anyone else who experienced it -- remember seeing "A New Hope" in 1977 because their jaws dropped in disbelief when that seemingly endless Star Destroyer kept passing before their eyes in pursuit of that tiny rebel transport. Why does the saga begin with Episode IV? George Lucas was influenced by a variety of concepts and genres that he blended together in a unique hodge-podge one of which was 1930s serials that ended on cliffhangers and continued for many, many chapters. They initially played these serials on the radio and later as featurettes before the main movie in theaters. If you hadn't been watching the serial from the beginning and just showed up casually on any old weekend, you'd find yourself in the middle of a story. This is called "in media res." Lucas was trying to recreate that sensation of walking into the middle of a story. Originally, the film was just called "Star Wars" because there were no expectations of sequels. As the saga evolved, the episodes were numbered and given subtitles. That's why Star Wars begins with Episode 4, "A New Hope". Other influences were World War II aerial dogfight footage, Leni Riefenstahl's Nazi propaganda films for the fascistic imagery, Eastern Daoist philosophy, Flash Gordon serials, Akira Kurosawa's samurai epics, spaghetti Westerns, Errol Flynn swashbucklers, Edgar Rice Burroughs' sword-and-planet fiction, Frank Frazetta paintings and Joseph Campbell's scholarly writing on the hero's journey, "The Hero with a Thousand Faces". The reason these films struck a chord with worldwide audiences is because they tapped into both universal archetypes and specific images from a variety of cultural sources. The non-CGI, PRACTICAL special effects were a quantum leap ahead of anything current and still hold up today. To promote the Prequel trilogy of the 2000's, Lucas remastered the Classic trilogy with DIGITAL effects which is why some elements look computer-generated. The two most narrative-oriented digital additions occur on Tatooine. In one, you get an early glimpse of Jabba the Hutt and the bounty hunter Boba Fett who figure prominently later on. This was cool. Jabba was originally played by a heavy-set man before being digitally rendered as a large slug which is why Han refers to him as a human being! In the other, the bounty hunter Greedo, who corners Han in the cantina, is shown to fire his blaster first whereas, originally, Han Solo fired pre-emptively under the table bushwhacking Greedo. This demonstrated Solo's rough, dangerous nature. The change caused a good deal of outrage but we're stuck with it now! Lol. Artoo (R2-D2) is probably the smartest character in the whole franchise! Little person actor Kenny Baker operated the droid from within! Artoo is a type of droid called an ASTROMECH which are like ambulatory Swiss Army knives whose function is to serve as an onboard mechanic for starships. The two droids are meant to be the WITNESSES of the saga and appear in 11 of the 12 films! Lucas got the idea of servant witnesses from Akira Kurosawa's samurai classic, "The Hidden Fortress". Wilhuff Tarkin is a Grand Moff which is a military term denoting his administrative authority over multiple sectors of the galaxy. Tarkin is top brass in the military and, under the Emperor's totalitarian regime, the military has replaced the civilian government. During the briefing, we are informed that the Senate has been abolished. Vader is the Emperor's enforcer but doesn't hold a political title or military rank. Tarkin is the man in charge of the nuts and bolts. Venerated actor Peter Cushing, known for playing Dr. Frankenstein, Van Helsing and Sherlock Holmes, portrayed the evil bureaucrat so soulless he could casually order the destruction of a planet teeming with billions and so respected even Vader deferred to his commands! Leia Organa is the Princess of Alderaan. There are millions of civilizations in the galaxy with a monarchic government. Most of them are obscure. Alderaan's civilization is ancient and it is one of the founding worlds of the Republic so many of the civilized worlds of the Galactic Core would be familiar with her family especially since she is a member of the Senate. However, Tatooine is in the Outer Rim beyond the jurisdiction of the centralized government so there's little reason a farmboy like Luke would know who she is. The climactic duel between Kenobi and Vader looks stiff and lacks the visceral impact of a more dynamic duel because Sir Alec Guiness was an elderly gent, the Vader suit allowed for a limited range of motion and the lightsaber props kept shattering with hard impacts. A KZbin fan called FXitinPost crafted an incredibly thrilling edit that lends the scene all the pizzazz it was lacking. It's called SC-38 RE-IMAGINED! Check it out AFTER you see "Revenge of the Sith". Han received a medal for coming through in the clutch but, as his first mate, Chewie deserved one, too! Unfortunately, he doesn't receive it until the Sequel trilogy. The opening crawl relates the events of "Rogue One" which concludes just hours before "A New Hope" begins! Don't skip it as it is one of the best Star Wars films around! If you would like to see more of Han Solo, I highly recommend you not skip "Solo" either which tells the origin story of Han. It's an underrated Star Wars film and tremendous fun!

They can be the best of the allies and you don't want them as your enemies. Their clan based society absolutely hates treason... Darth Vader scares you? Works as intended, it the most iconic villain in cinema History. Overall, it is more or less as complicated as Lord of the Rings, so you won't have that many problems.

Welcome to the world of Star Wars. I will give some information for a better understanding of the universe. The Empire is a huge state that includes many planets and extends to most of the known galaxy, not counting some of the systems at the far edge. Initially, the empire was a constitutional monarchy, whose political affairs were governed not only by the emperor, but also by the senate, which includes a representative from each planet belonging to the empire, but after the creation of the Death Star, the senate was dissolved and power finally passed into the hands of the Emperor. Initially, the Empire was a galactic republic, but as a result of a series of events, the Lord of the Sith came to power, who proclaimed himself emperor (you will learn more about this in the prequels) Now about the structure of the Force, in this period of time, the two most powerful and well-known orders of forseusers are the Sith and the Jedi, they came from one ancient order of force users who served both its aspects - the Dark and the Light side. The dark and light side of the force are not the good and evil side, they represent two different currents of force and were named by members of the very first order in honor of the two moons that were satellites of the planet where this order was based, one was made of white stone, the other of black. This ancient order practiced a balance between the sides, the light one is more calm and creative, the dark one is more emotional and destructive. But over time, this order banned the study of the dark side of the force and focused on the light side, becoming the Jedi Order from the time. Once there was a split within the order and some members of the supreme Council were exiled to unknown regions of the galaxy because of the desire to study the dark side of the force. These fallen Jedi found the planet Korriban (or Morraband), where a humanoid undeveloped red-skinned race lived, which had a huge connection with the dark side. The fallen Jedi quickly subdued this race, which called itself the Sith, after which they named themselves the Sith Lords, creating a new order of force users, which was focused only on the dark side. With the passage of time, several major wars occurred between the newly created Sith Empire and the Old Republic, which included the Jedi as guardians of peace and justice. As a result, the Sith were almost destroyed several times, losing wars due to constant betrayals and internecine power struggles. But then a Sith lord was born, named Darth Bane, he created the rule of two, the rule that there can only be two Sith master and apprentice, a master to embody power, apprentice to reach for this power. When an apprentice becomes more powerful than a master, he kills him and takes his place, taking a new apprentice, the Sith were forced to go underground, but began to develop thanks to this. Darth Bane, after creating this rule, killed all the remaining Sith, becoming a master and taking a girl as an apprentice, who eventually killed him and, taking his place, continued the path of the Rule of Two. Sith and Jedi have opposite ideologies and philosophies, and most importantly - an attitude to the Force, Jedi serve the force, cutting themselves off from everything mundane, they are forbidden to take wives or husbands, have children, have property, nothing should cause affection and emotions and distract from serving the Force. Emotions lead to the dark side of the force, so the Sith raise their emotions to the absolute, they feed on them, most often hatred and rage, as one of the most powerful emotions, but also any other, if the Jedi serve the force like monks, then the Sith use the force to get what they want. Even the powers of the dark side and the light side are different, the light side is more creative and protective (force push, mind deception), when the dark side is more destructive and aggressive (force choke, force lightning) Now to the more relevant:) At the moment, thanks to political intrigues, the Sith lord Darth Sidious gained power over the galaxy, after which, with the help of his apprentice Darth Vader, he almost destroyed the Jedi Order, the Jedi are forced to hide without having contact with each other in the hope of someday being able to fight back. Oh yes, well, the names of the Sith Darth Vader, Darth Sidious, Darth Maul, etc. are not names given at birth, they receive them when they join the order, the prefix Darth literally means Lord in the language of the Sith. The code of the sith Peace is a lie. There is only Passion. Through Passion, I gain Strength. Through Strength, I gain Power. Through Power, I gain Victory. Through Victory my chains are Broken. The Force shall free me The code of the Jedi There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no chaos, there is harmony. There is no death, there is the Force.

One suggestion for you: if you plan to go through all 6 movies, Take a pen & paper and write yourself some notes=names, relationships between people--You'll need to remember everything from one movie to another. It's easier if you write some notes, unless you have a very good memory. Vocabulary for a good start: padawan=jedi apprentice, Darth=Dark lord of the Sith, Sith=dark jedis. Welcome aboard the SW fans gang & have a nice day.

In all honesty, though the best Star Wars stuff is in the few animated series.. But that's something else , that's actually becoming Reality with all the new stuff that's coming out today in live action .. If you're hooked and like it, I'm sure you're gonna end up watching all of it

Moreover, the prequels were made with the assumption that viewers would be familiar with the original trilogy and therefore have references to said original trilogy that will be lost on a viewer who has not seen it. Best Star Wars stuff, however, is not the animated series - it is in the EU books ("Legends" - not Disney). 😛

@hanng1242
@hanng1242 Жыл бұрын
@@B-a-t-m-a-n You are assuming that there actually *is* a coherent grand narrative. While the prequels could be seen as an attempt to create said grand narrative, this is a revisionist take on the making of the actual original trilogy. Star Wars was "Episode IV" not because Lucas had 6 films in mind, but rather because making it something like "Episode IV" was to make it more like the sci-fi serials from which Lucas took inspiration. The original trilogy wasn't even planned out as a trilogy (unlike the prequels) because we get abrupt changes in characterization and new plot points that require some sort of retcon. For example, if one were to ignore Star Wars as a franchise and watch "Episode IV" on its own, we see that (1) it completely wraps up its story. (2) Vader is not the Big Bad - he is the muscle, and (3) much of the later lore was not yet developed - such as when Obi-wan calls Vader "Darth" as though it is a given name during their duel. We now understand "Darth" to be a title that Sith use, not a name. If there had been a grand narrative, Obi-wan would have called Vader "Vader" or "Anakin." He didn't do so because the Sith were not yet a thing, but just a cool, evil-sounding word and because Vader was not Luke's father. That was invented when the film was successful enough that Lucas could get the money to make a sequel, and it is probable that it was at this time that he thought of a trilogy. In order to make the family connection work, though, he had to make up some BS about "a certain point of view" so as to square it with the first movie. Then, we have the brother and sister thing. This wasn't planned, it was invented after Empire was finished and RotJ was being written. It is there to get out of the love triangle that ended up getting created in Empire so that every one of the main characters could have a happy, as opposed to bittersweet, ending without creating a brand new love interest for Luke. All of Leia's kisses with Luke are squicky in hindsight because they were not brother and sister when those scenes were written. If Leia had "always known" as she said in RotJ, why did not not feel weird on Hoth? Furthermore, it makes no sense that the "other" hope that Yoda mentions in Empire is Leia because he is willing to sacrifice her along with Luke's other friends for Luke to stay and complete his Jedi training. It is rather odd to claim that there would be "another" when said other hope is in danger of death, which is also the reason why Luke wants to leave. That is, unless Yoda somehow knew that Leia would be OK, which means that he knew that Luke would be successful, which calls into question why it was so important for Luke to sacrifice them to complete the Jedi training. The prequels were written as just that - prequels. They were not written as the first part of some Lord of the Rings-type epic, but rather they were written to give interesting background to an already-exiting and known character. The prequels are actually completely unnecessary for the original trilogy. in the original trilogy, we have the story of Luke - how he went from naïve farmboy to the last of the Jedi through the power of love and friendship. It is only necessary for Luke and the audience to know that Vader is his father so that Luke's victory will be to redeem him rather than to kill him. We did not need to know *how* Anakin became Vader. Sure, there were people wondering about it, but it isn't necessary to know. It is like why Hannibal Rising was such a sellout book - Hannibal Lecter was scary because nobody, including the audience, knew how he became what he became. I sure it was a question that people asked, but was better left unanswered. It wasn't as though Thomas Harris had already come up with a backstory for the character when he wrote Red Dragon. This is why Hannibal Rising is a prequel, not the first part of a tetralogy.

@@hanng1242 I agree with probably everything you just said. But that was then, and this is now. I saw the movies in release order; I'm that old. Now we can watch them in whichever order we want. As a first-time viewer, it works to watch in Machete order because to do so gives one the backstory which makes the ending more poignant. One thing doesn't change; ROTJ is still the end of the story, and watching in that order keeps all surprises intact and, in fact, even gives us another one. I'd better stop before we get into spoiler territory.

You're watching this in 2022 and saying how impressive the visuals were - you have NO IDEA! Try to wrap your brain around what this was like for people in 1977! I was 7 years old when this came out, and I spent almost every penny I earned all summer to see it in the theater 9 times. It was mind-blowing! But, if you want to have some idea of what it was like, I recommend that you watch another Sci-Fi movie: Logan's Run (1976). Logan's Run is a good Sci-Fi movie, but it was typical of Sci-Fi at the time. The visual effects and everything else were serviceable, but when you compare them to Star Wars, released just one year later, it felt like we'd leaped 30 years into the future. Not just in visual effects, but in EVERY WAY - music, props, costumes, set design, ship design, scale, and sheer epicness. Logan's run was considered to be a damn good movie at the time, but after Star Wars, it seems like a low-budget student film by comparison - yet Logan's Run was the STANDARD of the day, and plenty of movies were much worse. Just the opening scene, where the Star Destroyer flies overhead firing at Leia's ship immediately told you that everything you used to know about movies was no longer true - that we were now in a new era. It would be like bringing a Tesla car back to 1960 - people's brains would melt. That's how big of an impact Star Wars was on my generation. There were still theaters showing it 9 months after release - and the theaters still had decent crowds, most of whom had seen it several times at least. When was the last time THAT happened?

In spite of what it seems, "Darth" is a title, not a name. It essentially is a Sith rank, like we use "Colonel" or "Captain". Vader is a Dark Lord of the Sith, which is why you hear people refer to him with "Milord" or "Lord". In turn, Sith are the opposites to Jedi like Kenobi. Its worth notingthis movie was funded personally by Lucas. He made enough from it to build Lucasfilms, Industrial Light and Mzgic, and Skywalker Sound. Oh, and fund the sequel. The actor who plays Tarkin found his uniform boots were too tight, but since the budget was limited, rather than demand replacements he did his scenes in bedroom slippers.
