As a Gen Xer who was 8 years old when this film came out and who watched the films in the order of release in the theaters, I agree...watch in release order. If we could follow the story, then you can as well.

_A long time ago, in a movie theater about 50 miles away ..._ *THERE WAS NO EPISODE TITLE* The studio didn't think this film would make much money. Lucas was crossing his fingers that it didn't bomb. For all he knew, Lucas was making one standalone movie. "Episode IV" and "A New Hope" were added in later releases, to be in line with the numbering adopted with Episode V. I first saw _Star Wars_ in 1977, at the Indian Hills Theater in Omaha, Nebraska, US (a city of about 1M). The Indian Hills was one of the last remaining Cinerama theaters in existence (it's long gone, now). Cinerama was an experimental widescreen format seen in the 1950s and 1960s. It had an extremely curved screen, such that films shot in Cinerama used _three cameras_ and _three projectors_ : one for the center of the screen and one for each side. Everything had to be constantly synchronized so that the film looked normal onscreen. If you see Cinerama films on DVD/Bluray/streaming today, it often looks distorted on the left and right. This is caused by converting a curved film to a flat screen. So there I was at the Indian Hills at the tender age of 12 -- the film's precise target demographic. The Indian Hills seated 810 patrons: 662 on the main floor and 148 in the balcony. It was completely packed, as was every screening of _Star Wars_ in every theater in the world, until the film left theaters. I'd gotten to the theater rather late, forcing me to sit in the center seat of row one. This turned out to be fantastically good bad luck. Today, the center of row one is a terrible seat due to parallax distortion. In a theater the size of the Indian Hills, that distortion didn't exist because the screen was far enough away from the seats. However, it was close enough so that it filled my field of view from top to bottom. The screen was large and curved enough so that it filled my field of view from periphery to periphery. _Star Wars_ was shot in CinemaScope, a more popular widescreen format that we still see today. While not technically the same as Cinerama, it still lent itself well to that screen. I watched _Star Wars_ with the film filling my entire field of view from top-to-bottom and side-to-side. I didn't have to turn my head to watch it unless I wanted to, and I usually didn't. It was an astonishingly immersive experience. Not even IMAX comes close. Add to that the massive audience reaction that shouldn't be overlooked. It was a shared experience that I've only seen at _Infinity War_ and _Endgame_ on their opening nights, when there were a lot of fans present. This audience reaction happened at every screening, in every theater, everywhere in the world, until _Star Wars_ left the screens. Imagine 810 people all cheering, clapping, jumping to their feet, and occasionally crying all at once. The shared experience was amazing, as it fed on itself. No one held back, it just kept growing and growing until the destruction of the Death Star -- which prompted massive roaring from the audience. The film itself was like nothing put to the screen at that time. While cinematically based on old _Flash Gordon_ and _Buck Rogers_ movie serials of the 1930s, this was a big-budget, big-screen version like nothing anyone had ever seen before. It completely changed science fiction on the movie screen. Until that time, you occasionally got a good science fiction film, but they tended to be years apart. After _Star Wars_ , there were multiple good science fiction movies every year, a trend that continues to this very day. There would be no modern _Star Trek_ without _Star Wars_ . _Star Wars_ was such a massive hit for 20th Century-Fox that Paramount quickly looked around and said, "Aha! We have this _Star Trek_ thing that Trekkies are always saying they want more of. Let's make it into a movie!" Thus _Star Trek - The Motion Picture_ was released in 1979. Without that, there would be no _Star Trek_ today. _Star Wars_ changed filmmaking from a business perspective. The film grabbed audiences like nothing seen in the entire history of cinema. While _Jaws_ was technically the first summer blockbuster, _Star Wars_ cemented summer as the time to release action-heavy, family-friendly films. The special effects of _Star Wars_ were utterly innovative, and the tools created by the likes of John Dykstra became commonplace in films that don't even have special effects. Almost all special effects in the Original Trilogy were achieved either in-camera, with optical effects, miniatures, extremely detailed paintings, or a combination of those techniques. CGI that allows an entire film to be shot on a green screen wasn't even a glimmer in anyone's eye. In 1977, the most advanced computers were the size of an SUV and didn't have the computing power of your phone. CGI as a primary filmmaking technique wasn't popularized until _Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow_ in 2004. By then, computing power/square centimeter had skyrocketed exponentially. The special effects spawned Industrial Light and Magic, a company created and owned by George Lucas. ILM is still in existence today, constantly innovating with new technologies to create visual effects for many, many films and TV series. From it's inception, ILM has been considered the gold standard of VFX companies. In short, this film was nothing like what had come before. It changed _everything about cinema_ . And I got to see it with an audience of 810, on a screen so immersive that I got nauseous during the Trench Run.

This movie was heavily inspired by a Japanese film called The Hidden Fortress. In that film a princess is captured by an evil warlord who wants to know the location of the hidden fortress. She ends up sending two servants to fetch a retired samurai to save her and stop the warlord. Basically the same plot as this movie only the servants are the Droids.

I was 12 yo when this move was released. It was the first time I went to the movies without a parent. My cousins and I saw it on a Saturday afternoon. That was 46 years ago, and I'm still hooked.

The jabba scene was an addition to the movie in the 90s, and is disliked by most fans. It was filmed for the original film, but cut because Jabba was played by a big man in furs and the special effects of the time didn't let Lucas make him look like he wanted. When the films were rereleased in the 90s, Lucas added it back in with a bad CGI Jabba. People hated it, so he redid the CGI again and made it a little better, although it's still pretty poor. Specifically the bit where Han walks behind Jabba and "steps on his tail" is kind of laughable in how janky it is. But CGI aside, the real issue with the scene is that it's fan service (Jabba! Boba Fett!) and nothing else. It doesn't add anything to the movie. The danger hanging over Han's head was already established in the Greedo scene that directly preceded it. The Jabba scene just repeats all of the same information again. It's superfluous and bad.

1. Sir. Alec Guinness/Obi-Wan didn't want the part. Being a Shakespearian actor, he thought the entire idea was silly and was beneath him, but his wife talked him into taking the part. 2. The shrug Chewie gives Luke after he scares the tiny black droid is 🤪 3. These movies were put out in a certain order because there was limited technology and Lucas used and pushed forward the images needed to make a quality product. The best way to watch the is in the order they came out. We had to wait years for the next one. There was no internet where we had access to them whenever we wanted. 4. No need to go into anything after VI. Disney took over and the quality dropped. I realize you have to. 5. The only CGI was put in for the 25th anniversary package in this film are the critters the stormtroopers were riding at the beginning of the search for the robots, a couple of the huge critters outside the pub and the scene with Jabba the Hutt. Those were put in later after CGI was available. Otherwise, everything is what we had in 1977. 6. Obi-Wan sacrificed himself after he told Vader he would be stronger than ever. He went back into the force. He knows it's Luke's job to take over. 7. The awkwardness in the detention space is because Ford didn't know his lines. It was kept in the movie anyway because it worked. 8. The next two are the best of the series. Enjoy!

Actually huge chunks of the Death Star attack was redone/reworked. Notably the X-Wings as they approach the Death Star with Yavin in the background. Lots of X-Wings re-composited to make them more dynamic, too.

Fun fact: The Chewbacca costume that the late, great Peter Mayhew wore was not supposed to get wet in the garbage compactor scene. But it did, and considering the fact that the original suit was made of yak hair, It produced a pretty funky odor.

Watching them in release order is the way to go, because things are revealed as the series goes on. If you watch them in numeric order, by the time you get through episode 4 you will be thinking "wait, that was in the past so he should already know that". That's because many of the finer details of the whole story weren't worked out yet when the original movie was released, since it was doubtful if it would be a success and was intended to be a stand alone story.

@@LippsReacts 4,5,6 are the foundation. All the character archetypes and story structure is there. There also is one line from the opening crawl that was the inspiration for rogue one/andor. People have many debates about the best present-day order to introduce someone to Star Wars.

"The Force will be with you, always." Fun Fact: The first movie to make over $300 million domestic box office. It was also the first movie to cross $500 million worldwide in its initial release. Action Star Fact: Stunt doubles were not used for the scene where Luke and Leia swing to safety in the Death Star. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher performed the stunt, shooting it in just one take. CGI Over Practical Fact: All the CGI was added in the late 90s and NOT part of the original release. I don't mind the changes, except for originally Han Solo (Harrison Ford) shot Greedo (Paul Blake) before the bounty hunter could do anything. Gun Enthusiast Fact: The weapons the stormtroopers used were essentially the Sterling L2A3 9mm SMG (sub-machine gun), a military weapon developed in the late 1940s in the U.K. and adopted by the British and Canadian Armies in the 1950s. The curved left entry side mounted magazine was removed, and that was as much as it was modified for the movie. The longer sandtrooper weapon was the MG-34 machine gun from Germany. Location Location Fact: The Tatooine scenes were filmed in Tunisia. There is a town in Tunisia's rural south named Tataouine (Berber for "eyes") and George Lucas liked the name so much, he adopted it for Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) home world. Some of the interiors and the courtyard of Luke's house were filmed in a hotel in Matmata, Tunisia. One can visit this two-star hotel and see some pictures and the painted ceiling of what was used for the Lars' dining room. When Luke goes out of the farm, he appears in a flat deserted area, while the reality, when you get out of the hotel, there are a lot of other houses, small stone hills, and a lot of prickly pear cacti (a variety very common in Tunisia). The skeleton that C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) passes belongs to a Tatooine creature called a Greater Krayt Dragon. This artificial skeleton was left in the Tunisian desert after filming and still lies there. During filming of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack Of The Clones (2002), the site was visited by the crew once more and the skeleton was still there.

I was 13 Years old in 1977 when I saw Star Wars in the Movie Theatre. The specular effects were ahead of its time. The movie was originally just called Star Wars because George Lucas did not know if he would be allowed to make more Star Wars Movies. It was renumbered Episode IV when Episode V The Empire Strikes Back was released in 1980. Han Solo improvized the talk when he was talking to storm Troopers when he said we are fine etc. .

For me, the original trilogy are the best. When Stars Wars came out, it was a new era of space films, like nothing I'd seen before. It was also a new era of movie merchandise. There were the numerous Star Wars toys, and I even had an R2D2 soap-on-a-rope.

Following THAT, I'd watch Rogue One. Beyond that, I'd watch The Clone Wars animated series, and then The Mandalorian TV series.

Consider watching Spaceballs after the first trilogy. It's Mel Brooks' scifi parody, loosely based on Star Wars. Brooks bases his genre parodies on a popular film of the genre, then mixes in anything & everything that even loosely fits the story; so while Spaceballs contains a lot of visual references to the Star Wars movies, there are also elements from Star Trek, Alien, The Wizard of Oz; & others. Since others in your comment section have shared how/when they first saw this film, I'll add my story. When I was a kid, every summer we took a road trip to some region of the US, heading out from southern Ohio. This was possible because both my parents worked for the public school system, so all three of our vacation breaks coincided. We were very excited when the impending release of this movie was announced. My father was a huge scifi fan! He attended scifi conventions when they were all about authors & the novels they'd written: back in the dim dark days before Bjo Trimble had organized the first ever Star Trek convention, a convention celebrating TV & cinema; not just books. Back in the early 70s. With as excited as we were for Star Wars, you can imagine how bummed we felt when we compared the release date with our travel itinerary, & realized that it'd be in theaters while *we* were touring the American Southwest! In those days, options were very few, so we'd reconciled ourselves to catching it once it had gotten to the cheaper theaters... I could go into whole paragraphs about how fun it was to set out knowing only the planned route, & the motel we'd reserved a room at for the first night. Every morning before checkout, we'd be on the room phone calling motels listed in the AAA guide book at the distance my mom knew she could safely drive in one day. Imagine traveling with no apps, no computers; no GPS. Just an impossible to refold map, a "trip tick" booklet of map sections put together by our AAA travel agent; & my parents' skill at navigation while I entertained myself with comic books in the back seat. One late afternoon, as we were on the highway passing a suburb of Santa Fe, New Mexico, while my parents were looking for the exit to our motel, I was just staring out the widow at the buildings passing by. One of the buildings was a neighborhood cinema. On the marquee, it read STAR WARS! I excitedly told my parents when we got settled in our room; & we decided we'd go see it. My father went to the newspaper dispenser outside the office & got a local paper. My mother called to find the right theater, & how to get there. That's how I came to watch this movie in the most beautiful theater I had ever been in! The interior featured bas-relief roses framing the screen. There's a strong Hispanic cultural connection in that part of the Southwest.

Mel Brooks Had to ask Lucas for permission to do a parody, he said yes as long as he didn't do any merchandising, which led to the scene where yougurt makes fun of merchandising it was Star Wars merch with Spaceballs labels on it. Lucas also said that they couldn't dress Lonestar like Han Solo, so Mel dressed him like Indiana Jones.

Star Wars was actually a western set in outer space. There's the father figure, the lady in distress, the boy hero, the rogue, the bad guy in black, and comedy relief (The robots). The 1977 release was spectacular with a new generation of special effects and sound effects however for the 1997 20th Anniversary rerelease, the movie got a CGI facelift, which is why a lot of the Gen Zoomer age group are so impressed with the movie. Without the CGI, the movie is still spectacular as mentioned.

'The Hidden Fortress' is the film which informed the plot the most: the princess and Luke were the same character at first, Tarkin and Vader, too (a character who has put the characters on the run, but is never seen). There is a comic series where the original script 'The Star Wars: The Journal of the Whills' is presented, showing the differences, such as two generations of heroes rather than it all happening at once. This script included parts that would later be included in the Star Wars prequels, and in 'Empire' and 'Return' as well.

"...recommendations on what other paths within the Star Wars universe..." You won't, but... I'd recommend watching the 'despecialized' versions of the movies. Why? Because the _special_ editions (and onward) went back an included scenes that shouldn't be there, tried to alter things in ways that are, frankly, dumb, and _removed_ bits that were awesome. It doesn't _completely_ kill the first trilogy, but it hurts it... a lot. The reason they updated it was to fit in better with the prequel trilogy that was coming out when they started all the changes, and to better fit to the vision of George Lucas. Now that last part may _sound_ good... except it turns out George _isn't_ as good a storyteller as we thought. Evidence? The prequel trilogy itself. It was _nowhere near_ as good as the first trilogy. So what was different? What changed? During the first trilogy, Star Wars had a _fantastic_ editor, who knew what needed to go, who understood narrative structure better than George does. His wife, Marcia Lucas. So why didn't she return to the job for the prequels, try to stop this man-child for turning his own movies into a fanfic? They got divorced. Since you've seen this movie already, I'll give you some examples of the good, the bad, and the ugly of what they did here. In the original, you never really get a shot of those giant lizards the Storm Troopers ride, the establishing shot with the cute hopping things as the enter Mos Eisley isn't there. Those were good. I have no trouble with those. Then there's the continuation of this with the shot into Mos Eisley with one droid smacking another, which just makes the whole thing seem silly, and a later conversation in which Biggs talks up Luke because they mentioned Biggs _once_ at the beginning of the movie, and he never came up again until that point, but Luke was _already established_ as a pilot during the cantina conversation where Luke says he's not a bad pilot himself (and the hint about him going to The Academy, whatever that was), and also when Han Solo finally chases the Storm Troopers and they decide to turn and fire, there was no army of more of them behind them... they just kinda realized there's six of them and only one Han (plus it feeds into the later 'let them escape' thing). That's bad. In the Cantina scene, Guido, who is trying to _capture_ Solo, _shoots_ at Han at the exact same moment that Han shoots him under the table. Worse, Han's head is shifted to the side digitally, so Han _dodged_ the shot. At that range. Or there's no dodge and at that range Guido missed. In the _original,_ Han shoots first... and that's all. Guido never gets a shot... because he's too busy being dead. Then there's the whole interaction with Jabba, in which Han Solo _steps on_ Jabba, making him seem cartoonish instead of threatening. Can you imagine if someone who owed a crime boss money did that? Wouldn't matter how much the crime boss liked them, they'd be either begging or dead in seconds. _This_ is the ugly, this is the sort of thing which takes the movie from a decent movie to something trying to aim at 8-year-old childish minds. Keep in mind that this movie has two _charred corpses_ in it, implied torture, the death of _millions_ of people (minimum), and so on. You can argue that this movie is for kids, maybe, but not for kids _that young._ It was rated PG initially, and would _likely_ be rated PG-13 _today_ (that rating didn't exist at the time, and these movies are part of why it exists). And that's just _this_ movie. This same trend happens later on, in the other movies, where stuff is added or altered that _doesn't need to be there,_ shouldn't be there, and makes the movie less good _by_ being there. Beyond that, if you insist on watching all the movies, I might do the Machete order. This would be problematic, since the full order of that requires you to watch _part of_ the third movie, then pause, watch the prequels, and then come back. Otherwise, release order is fine. If you'd like to know the Machete order, my next paragraph contains it and includes _as little_ spoiler material as possible (ie, it shouldn't tell you anything much about the movie). Still, there _is_ a very minor spoiler in there. It's the only spoiler I'll put in here. Machete order is to watch the first two movies, then the third movie up until Vader and Luke finish their first in-person conversation of that movie, then the prequels, then back to the Return of the Jedi. Your expression on seeing the Aunt and Uncle dead was... yeah. And remember! Lucas has always maintained this is a _kids_ movie. For children. Your expression when Obi'Wan goes down was _also_ epic. :) Great reaction! Have a nice day. :)

Brace yourself; Star Wars fandom is a mixed bag. Experiencing the stories for yourself and enjoying them as a fan is great, but unfortunately, especially online, many individuals in the fandom are incredibly toxic and want to force their (often bad) opinions onto newcomers. Welcome to the world of Star Wars. I will give some information for a better understanding of the universe. The Empire is a huge state that includes many planets and extends to most of the known galaxy, not counting some of the systems at the far edge. Initially, the empire was a constitutional monarchy, whose political affairs were governed not only by the emperor, but also by the senate, which includes a representative from each planet belonging to the empire, but after the creation of the Death Star, the senate was dissolved and power finally passed into the hands of the Emperor. Initially, the Empire was a galactic republic, but as a result of a series of events, the Lord of the Sith came to power, who proclaimed himself emperor (you will learn more about this in the prequels) Now about the structure of the Force, in this period of time, the two most powerful and well-known orders of forseusers are the Sith and the Jedi, they came from one ancient order of force users who served both its aspects - the Dark and the Light side. The dark and light side of the force are not the good and evil side, they represent two different currents of force and were named by members of the very first order in honor of the two moons that were satellites of the planet where this order was based, one was made of white stone, the other of black. This ancient order practiced a balance between the sides, the light one is more calm and creative, the dark one is more emotional and destructive. But over time, this order banned the study of the dark side of the force and focused on the light side, becoming the Jedi Order from the time. Once there was a split within the order and some members of the supreme Council were exiled to unknown regions of the galaxy because of the desire to study the dark side of the force. These fallen Jedi found the planet Korriban (or Morraband), where a humanoid undeveloped red-skinned race lived, which had a huge connection with the dark side. The fallen Jedi quickly subdued this race, which called itself the Sith, after which they named themselves the Sith Lords, creating a new order of force users, which was focused only on the dark side. With the passage of time, several major wars occurred between the newly created Sith Empire and the Old Republic, which included the Jedi as guardians of peace and justice. As a result, the Sith were almost destroyed several times, losing wars due to constant betrayals and internecine power struggles. But then a Sith lord was born, named Darth Bane, he created the rule of two, the rule that there can only be two Sith master and apprentice, a master to embody power, apprentice to reach for this power. When an apprentice becomes more powerful than a master, he kills him and takes his place, taking a new apprentice, the Sith were forced to go underground, but began to develop thanks to this. Darth Bane, after creating this rule, killed all the remaining Sith, becoming a master and taking a female forceuser as an apprentice, who eventually killed him and, taking his place, continued the path of the Rule of Two. Sith and Jedi have opposite ideologies and philosophies, and most importantly - an attitude to the Force, Jedi serve the force, cutting themselves off from everything mundane, they are forbidden to take wives or husbands, have children, have property, nothing should cause affection and emotions and distract from serving the Force. Emotions lead to the dark side of the force, so the Sith raise their emotions to the absolute, they feed on them, most often hatred and rage, as one of the most powerful emotions, but also any other, if the Jedi serve the force like monks, then the Sith use the force to get what they want. Even the powers of the dark side and the light side are different, the light side is more creative and protective (force push, mind deception), when the dark side is more destructive and aggressive (force choke, force lightning) Now to the more relevant:) At the moment, thanks to political intrigues, the Sith lord Darth Sidious gained power over the galaxy, after which, with the help of his apprentice Darth Vader, he almost destroyed the Jedi Order, the Jedi are forced to hide without having contact with each other in the hope of someday being able to fight back. Oh yes, well, the names of the Sith Darth Vader, Darth Sidious, Darth Maul, etc. are not names given at birth, they receive them when they join the order, the prefix Darth literally means Lord in the language of the Sith. The code of the sith Peace is a lie. There is only Passion. Through Passion, I gain Strength. Through Strength, I gain Power. Through Power, I gain Victory. Through Victory my chains are Broken. The Force shall free me The code of the Jedi There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no chaos, there is harmony. There is no death, there is the Force.
