The plot points are so timeless too, even the ones about computers. "Use the force.... PASS!" and "He still gets the money too, right?" made me lmao. "So the force can also kill thousands of people?" was both good dark humor and a pretty deep and quick understanding.

😂Believe me, it's not. I only know Star Wars based off Episode 6 that I may have watched when I was about 7. Can't remember a thing except Ewoks(coz they're cute), Princess Leia(coz I know someone named Leia), the other 3 main male characters(which I don't know how they're connected), and then Natalie Portman became every boys' crush in my class after Episorde 1 came out.

This was such a groundbreaking movie. They invented a lot of visual and sound effects for this. When it first came out, it was like nothing anyone had ever seen. Theaters were packed, the whole audience cheered when the Death Star exploded, and those iconic lines would be repeated for months on end. Even today it truly stands the test of time.

Lucas's strength was visual effects, not so much story telling. Not that the originals were bad, but they weren't complex. But even the prequels pushed special effects as well. Although someone may want to let Neel know that they are watching the updated version where they added more modern FX that weren't in the original 1979 version

Lucas had NO plans to write any more after that (meaning any prequels) It was years before he decided to come up with prequels, Episodes I, II and III If someone never saw any of them before, watching them from Episode I - VI there would be NO "mystery" no unexpected twists and turns, you would know everything before it happens and it would NEVER be as interesting or any "OH WOW!" moments. The dog fight scene at the end was mapped on old World war II footage from Battle of Britain so they replicated it with models and footage. This film also had to create many of the techniques which were used going forward, some of the effects and CGI were added in the 90s when it was re-released. The droids in the Star wars universe are restricted by programming so dont tend to lie, and tend to do as they are told, but may try to find ways of following instructions, this is why they told the trooper where Luke was heading and why they just let them walk out. The film is heavily based on an old Japanese movie.

Sodium Pentothal, the 'truth serum', does actually exist but its not exactly how its depicted in movies. It essentially reduces your inhibitions and makes you more compliant to pressure and suggestion. Its effectiveness varies wildly from person to person, so its imperfect nature has lead to it not being in use much anymore due to its questionable reliability. There are still countries that use it for interrogation purposes but not many.
@brucechmiel7964
@brucechmiel7964 Жыл бұрын
The mind probe is a lot more nefarious and effective than sodium pentothal. In legends it can trick the brain into feeling all sorts of stimuli. Like being dunked in acid, or set on fire, or make you think you killed someone important to you. The Probe is designed to weaken your will and make you more susceptible to suggestions.

The planet is Tattoine. It is in a binary star system. Jawa: Little species, native to the planet. Scavangers. Sand People/Tuskan Raider: Also native species to the planet. Hostile to outsiders. The reason the Sand People ran off was because Obi-wan made the sound of a Krayt dragon, which they fear. In 1977 effects had to be practical. SFX themselves had to be added to the film after, usually by hand. Star Wars also created much of the technology that is currently used in movie making. "Truth serums" are actually a thing. These include ethanol, scopolamine, 3-quinuclidinyl benzilate, midazolam, flunitrazepam, sodium thiopental, and amobarbital.

It's hard to explain the cultural phenomenon this was that summer (and then fall and Christmas season) this was in 1977. Every theater had "HELD OVER SIX MORE WEEKS!" on their marquee. It snuck into every vein of popular culture - every style of music, TV, radio, national news stories, records, toys.....everything. The only things I can compare it to would be the early stages of Elvis, The Beatles and Michael Jackson Thriller era. Since then, everyone has been trying to tap that initial hysteria but with disappointing results. It will never be duplicated.

For future reference: Whenever someone disappears when they die it is because they became a force ghost. So their consciousness lives on in the force, that’s how you man hear obi wan talking to Luke through this movie after he was dead. Only force users can do this, so if Han or someone died he wouldn’t become a force ghost, and not even all Jedi have this ability, only a select few discovered and learned it

Star Wars Episode 4 was released in theaters in May of 1977. I was 10 years old at that time. The movie was a mega hit world wide and was ahead of its time in story and FX. The version you are watching is the 1997 remastered CGI version. Prior to that the FX was done with stop motion animation which was considered the best ever when the movie was first released. It won several Oscars because of it. Back in the day when a popular film like Star Wars were in theaters it was not uncommon for that same exact movie to be re-released again cinemas the following year. Star Wars was so popular that theaters would be packed year after year. Lines for the film would stretch several blocks long. Even people who had already seen it the first time went back time and time again to watch it. Then when the sequels came out it happened all over again. Back in 1997 the remastered CGI extended version of the film was released for the 20th anniversary of the film with extra deleted scenes added and theaters were packed yet again as if it were 1977 all over again. The place was so full of fans that even though there were many fans like my brother and I who had already see the movie in the 70s, the film still got a standing ovation just the same. It was still that good and well worth the watch. 🎞📽👍💖

The CG and such wasn't this good in the 1997 version... This was a later "update"... I forget exactly when, but whenever the Blu-Ray was released, I think... Maybe 2011 or something... There might have been an update between those... More CG stuff was added and they improved how CG Jabba looked... They improved the edit of Greedo shooting first... It was much more obviously edited before... I think the "Maclunkey" might have been added... Might be some other changes... I think Luke's speeder originally moved along the ground more, but was edited to make it look like it was in the air... I don't remember if they did that for the 97 one or the later version... It might have been "updated" again since then... I'm not sure...

One way to understand the impact of “Star Wars” in 1977 is to look at, say, the ENTIRETY of the 1970s up to that point, look at what was popular up until mid-1977. No matter how good those films are, and there were many great films - “Star Wars” just rearranged the entire landscape. It was so fresh, so invigorating, so new and inventive, that watching the film was akin to some new kind of stimulant you could only get at the cinema. EVERYTHING done before “Star Wars” was instantly forgotten. Everything cool three weeks before was old news! The change happened FAST, and soon every kid wanted Star Wars, and their parents with ticket money had to agree: It was pretty damn cool. Then look at how many WAVES of science fiction and fantasy films that came in the years and decades following. Everyone wanted a piece of the wild fantasy entertainment craze. It went on solid for years. The movie’s technological advances and their repercussions we are still seeing today, and would take many volumes to discuss. This is one of the most influential movies in ALL film history, truly.

2:15 "I wonder if this is how white people pulled up to Africa" The Empire is a mishmash of various autocratic/imperialistic regimes from real history, but mostly they're space-Nazis, but also The British Empire (And the rebels are The Allied resistance of WWII/American revolutionaries) 19:00 "Whenever they say 'sand people' I feel like they're talking about me" Much of Star Wars is inspired by Frank Herbert's "Dune" which was a direct allegory for oil dependence. The indegenous people of the desert planet with the precious resource on it coded Arabs. The de-humanizing portayl/treatment of the Sand People in Star Wars is actually addressed later in the franchise, and they are shown to be a rich and vibrant culture, uniquely adapted to a harsh, unforgiving habitat. 24:15 "How ya gonna lose to a bitch-ass f*cking serum?" Sodium Pentathol and other so-called "truth serums" loosen your inhibitions and supress higher brain functions, making it harder to *remember* your lie and keep your story straight. They don't work all that well, it is mostly a movie thing. Something else you can do is inject someone with drugs that just make them feel *bad* as *torture* and withhold an antidote or threaten to dose them more.

All of 13 minutes in (minus some cut time), and they know they love R2D2. Like all the rest of us! If no one's mentioned it, one of the primary things his style of droid is designed for starship repair, which is why he (and others) ride with the fighters. I have to say, I love how after decades of sci-fi films taking inspiration and cues from these movies, you can still watch this and feel like the scenes and aliens are exotic. Speaks to the quality of the design for... pretty much everything. "Everyone sucks at aiming!"... welcome to Star Wars. If you don't have the Force, aiming skills are... variable. See you at the next movie!

Truth Serums do exist though. Any kind of "truth serum" is basically a mind altering drug. But their effect is not enough to stop a person from lying, but makes it significantly harder. For example sodium thiopental: It slows the speed at which your body sends messages from your spinal cord to your brain. As a result, it's more difficult to perform high-functioning tasks, such as concentrating on a single activity for example keeping up a lie.

As far as magic systems go, the Force is so insanely powerful it makes the magic in Harry Potter look pathetic. It's not just the energy of life, it's the energy that binds the very FABRIC OF THE UNIVERSE together. Here are some of the (non-movie) feats that Force users have pulled off: * Flung an entire fleet of ships out of a solar system *wiped out all life on an entire planet down to the microbial level in seconds *held an exploding planet together *enhanced the user's reaction time to NANOSECONDS *allowed superhuman feats of strength, speed, agility, durability *controlled the minds of an entire planet full of people simultaneously The only real limits are your imagination and your ability to immerse yourself in its power. That's it.

For some of the later movies, my dad's delivery service out of Napa, CA used to deliver packages to Lucas studios, mostly boxes and probably set stuff. but one day he said wow they have a really ugly monster of some kind I delivered today lol... I still don't know what it was, no pics or anything. But when the movie came out, it was the big thing at the theatures and we got to see it about 1 yr after it came out and was making waves in the entertainment industry

there are a range of psychoactive drugs that are commonly called "truth serums", but they don't really make you speak truth as much as they make you suggestible. this can sometimes get the truth from skilled interrogators, but it can also lead to people just telling you what you want to hear, or repeating things back. they aren't used much because of the moral issues involved, as well as unreliability.

Its also crazy to think that this movie came out in 1977. What other films of that era even approach this one? I guess Rocky came out around the same time, but I mean in terms of imagination, fantasy, building entire worlds, lore, special effects, etc. People who saw this when it first came out were like "oh, so this is what a movie can be like!" It was really the first of its kind. I would say this movie walked so the great movies to follow it could run. It set the bar basically. Also George Lucas gave up his entire paycheck for working on this movie in exchange for a percentage of the merchandise sales. If this movie flopped he would have made $0. As it turns out, that deal made him filthy rich. Alec Guinness, Obi Wan's og actor, also decided to give up his paycheck for a percentage of the profits, which again turned out to be a wise decision. The people who worked on it KNEW they had something special enough to gamble on its success.

Some people may have said already, but this film has been updated at least two times since its original release... Any semi-decent looking CG stuff was added later... The Jabba scene was originally a deleted scene where he was played by a man, but around 1997 they made a special edition... Then things were "updated" again later, for the Blu Ray... Originally the alien at the bar didn't shoot Han Solo, Han just shot him first... In Episodes 5 and 6 they change some stuff to match Episodes 1, 2 and 3 more... I think one character is dubbed over by an actor in those, for continuity reasons... Some stuff with Darth Vader is changed in Episode 6, for the same reason... Personally, I recommend trying to find older versions of the films to watch, so you can compare... Or if you're feeling lazy, there are most likely videos online that compare some of the changes... I prefer the older versions myself and wish there were at least options for them... Official ones, that don't involve searching online for fan edits or whatever... These updates aren't as bad as some people might make out, but I do still think a lot of the changes are kinda stupid and do a bit more harm than good ... For historic reasons it's also a shame that watching the classic version is so difficult too... It was a landmark movie in many respects... With the continuity stuff, some people, whose most iconic roles were possibly in the original trilogy, have had part of that erased... So that kinda sucks for them too... I don't know, maybe they didn't care that much... Their parts weren't necessarily huge anyway... But still... Oh well...

Well, since you asked... lol In the original release of this movie, during the Greedo scene, Han shoots first. It's sort of a meme now, but the version you are watching is an "Enhanced Edition." It also adds some new scenes that I don't think add anything to the movie. There is a fan edit called Harmy's Despecialized Edition that, IMO, is the best current version of the films. It gets rid of most of the crap they added in the 90's, but the quality is upscaled.

"Overhated", oh please. For the last 10 years or so people are bending over backwards trying to talk up the prequels and how "brilliant" they actually are, after the justified disappointment compared to the OT when they came out. It's just compulsive contrarianism. I get it when people say "yeah the prequels have a lot of problems but I still like em because I saw them when I was a little kid", but this "ackshually they're super deep and brilliant!" is really grinding my gears.

@@robertgronewold3326 Nah, I'd say they get the appropriate amount of "hate". Look, I get it, you grew up with them when you were a little kid with no media literacy and it makes you feel insecure when people criticize something you associate positive childhood memories with. You're allowed to like wooden acting, flat boring characters, poorly aged, overemployed CGI, cringy dialogues, etc., but you must realize that most people just don't like those things. Also the sequels being shit doesn't make the prequels any less shit retroactively, that's not how it works. And in 10-15 years there's going to be another generation of children who grew up with the sequels who will praise them as "underrated masterpieces ackshually", maybe then you'll understand what I'm talking about.

25:40 some of these scenes though were redone and added in 1997 when Lucas did the prequels. If you can find a dvd with the original theatrical release then you’ll see what they did back in 77. To know if you have the original is the open crawl won’t have episode 4 or a new Hope at the top. The technology was at the point that he was able to add what he wanted to do back in 1977. Lucasfilm is a big reason why we have such technology in film industry. If it wasn’t available George Lucas did what he could to make it. That’s how Pixar came to be before he sold it to Apple who sold it to Disney. 27:18 Luke is 19 in this.

It's kind of nerdy and doesn't really impact the movie very much but I still have some information to share. The stormtrooper armor actually does help against the blaster fire. You'll notice that they fall down and looked dead but, according to lore, most regular blaster fire is actually dispersed throughout the armor and it ends up just stunning instead of killing. Han Solo's blaster is powerful as all get-out though and can penetrate the armor. So can Chewbacca's bowcaster.
