Sylvester Stallone contacted Jim Peterik (Survivor member and main songwriter and producer) and asked him to write and record a song for Rocky III. He really liked their song "Poor Mans Son" and thought something similar would be great for the movie. The result was "Eye of the Tiger" which was perfect and has had a life way beyond the movie. It was such a success Stallone asked them to do it again for Rocky IV and the result was "Burning Heart."

Sly did the same to Shinedown when Expendables and spoke to Brent and asked him to write the the theme tune for the movie. Once they had spoken plots etc he gave him free rein on the song other than the words Boom lay boom lay boom 🤷🏼‍♀️ and the banger diamond eyes was born. I never knew that about eye of the tiger so I wonder if he’s done it on any other films 🤔 it would be interesting to find out. Anyone know of any other songs made this way ? xx

@@motleydigger Check out Jim Peterik's book called "Through The Eye of The Tiger.' He spends nearly a whole chapter talking about this song and how it came about. This is a great book with lots of interesting stories regarding "The Ides of March", "Survivor", and "Pride of Lions", as well as stories about songs he wrote for other groups like "38 Special." All very interesting.

Back in the 90s I used to own an automotive tune and lube shop, and the drummer for Survivor had fallen on hard times and was working for me as a mechanic. One day the two of us were painting the lube pit and the song "Vehicle" came on the radio. I started singing along and, to my delight, this guy starts singing and drumming along. I was like, OMG I'm singing with the guy from Survivor! When the song was over, I said, "I can't believe you know that song, too!" and he said, "Yeah, I was also the drummer for the Ides of March." Small world, man.

Interestingly, Eye of the Tiger most likely would not have been written if the iconic band Queen had not turned down Sylvester Stallone’s request to use their song “Another One Bites the Dust” for his boxing movie. Stallone heard Survivor’s track, “Poor Man’s Son,” and thought they could write the kind of song he was looking for. Survivior quickly came up with “Eye of the Tiger,” and the rest is history.... 🤩

I had a similar experience. I’d been very ill in hospital for a couple of weeks and I was sat in car on my way home silent as dad drove me home and I was worried how I would cope and I was scared as hell about being ok and this song came on the radio and so cranked the volume and I was all “come on !! Bring it on “ it’s such a good pumping up song. Really gets you ready for battle 👌🏻 Hope you’re mum made a full recovery 🙏🏻xx

I love this song. My cat was old, his name was Tiger. Every time I would play this song he would sit beside me until it went off then he’d go about his business. I miss him so much. Because the song was written for the film as some others have pointed out. Sly probably asked him to base it around that line. Same as expendables theme. Sly asked Shinedown to write that and said do your thing but I need the words boom lay boom boom in there and as a result diamond eyes was made and it’s a favourite Shinedown song of mine. Brings back great memories. I remember they played this at the end of the Rocky movie and no one in the theater moved until the song was over. This wasn’t the type of song you walked out on. During that time, the streets and subways in New York, became very dangerous. A group of young toughs banded together, followed a set of rules and morals, and rode the subways to protect the people of New York. They always wore a beret, and never carried a weapon. They wouldn’t last long nowadays. I think that’s why the main singer is wearing a beret.

This is my favorite band from the 80's and one of my favorite bands overall. Survivor had a lot of hits and were a very popular band throughout the 1980's, "Eye of the Tiger" was used in Rocky III and "Burning Heart" was another big hit and was used in Rocky IV. Other great hits include "Poor Mans Son", "I Can't Hold Back", "High on You", "The Search is Over", "Is This Love", "I See You in Everyone", "Everlasting" and "Broken Promises."

I've was a big Survivor fan in the 80s & early 90s. Eye of the Tiger was done with their 1st lead singer, Dave Bickler, who also sang their song Caught in the Game (also a great song). However, Bickler was replaced by Jimi Jamison around 1984 after he unfortunately suffered a serious vocal cord injury requiring surgery & recovery. Jimi Jamison was their lead singer for Burning Heart (yes, it's in a Rocky movie...Rocky 4?) and many other hits like The Search is Over, I Can't Hold Back, Is This Love?, etc. I had their Vital Signs & When Seconds Count cassettes for decades & should have kept them. Played those songs over & over. In the early 90s, I got to see Jimi Jamison perform in a smaller venue in Houston called The Hop & it's still one of my treasured memories. He was so talented, handsome, & just extremely nice. According to those who were close to him, Jimi was just your regular guy with wife, kids, backyard BBQ, & no airs about him. He was actually with a more heavy metal band before Survivor called Cobra and wasn't sure at first if he'd fit well into what Survivor was. Thank God for him taking that chance. Jimi passed away about 10 yrs ago. RIP Jimi Jamison. I think Dave Bickler may have rejoined Survivor in later years. Haven't heard anything new, so I probably should check & see. As for reactions, BP, I'd suggest doing Caught in the Game & Burning Heart before any of the others. The Search is Over is still one of my favorite ballads, though. Any of their songs will stop me in my tracks to listen. Survivor's concert in Japan can probably still be found on KZbin, but we had it recorded on VHS tape from MTV. My Mom loved their music, too.

ICONIC! Not the 80's without this song. Used in the movie Rocky III. Pumps you up during the movie and just listening to it. "Burning Heart" was used in Rocky IV. While not as huge as this, it was still excellent and drove a feeling of inspiration. SURVIVOR had a number of hits in the 80's - "Burning Heart", "High on You", "Search is Over", "Can't Hold Back" and others. Not all had the impact of this song but many were very good.

Survivor became super-famous for 'Eye of the tiger' after it was mad famous in the movie 'Rocky III'... and they supplied the main song 'Burning heart' for the next movie 'Rocky IV'... But it sort of became a curse for Survivor - they eventually split up by the late 80's. Their late singer Jimi Jamison also did vocals for the 'Baywatch' series theme song. Formed in the 70's, Survivor was originally Dave Bickler (vocals), Jim Peterik (guitar/keyboards), Frankie Sullivan (lead guitar), Dennis Keith Johnson (bass) and Gary Smith (drums)... debuting in 1979. The line-up soon changed in 1981 w/ Stephan Ellis (bass) and Marc Droubay (drums) joining... They recorded their 3rd album 'Eye of the tiger' in 1982, which sold platinum in the US and had another hit single - 'American heartbeat'.... The single 'Eye of the Tiger' became a #1 hit single worldwide. However, their 4th album 'Caught in the game' in 1983 was a commercial disappointment. In 1984, singer Dave Bickler was fired after suffering from vocal issues. Jimi Jamison (vocals) joined Survivor in 1984 and recorded another hit single 'The moment of truth'... for the movie 'The karate kid'... Survivor's 5th album 'Vital signs' became another platinum hit w/ 3 major singles - 'The search is over' ... "I can't hold back" ... 'High on you'. Their 1985 single 'Burning Heart' from 'Rocky IV' charted at #2 and became another massive hit single. 6th Survivor album 'When seconds count' in 1986 sold a half million copies in the US w/ hits like - 'Is this love' ... 'In good faith'. Both Ellis and Droubay left Survivor and they recorded their 7th album 'Too hot to sleep' in 1988 w/ a session bassist and drummer... The album was a commercial failure and Survivor disbanded by 1989 and released a 'Greatest hits' compilation. Survivor reunited to tour occasionally w/ singer Dave Bickler and lead guitarist Frankie Sullivan, while Jimi Jamison also toured under the name Survivor in the 90's... That led to lawsuits and Frankie Sullivan (lead guitar) finally won the rights to the Survivor name... Jimi Jamison reunited w/ Survivor in the 2000's after Dave Bickler was fired once again and recorded their 7th & final album 'Reach' in 2006 w/ Chris Grove (keyboards), Barry Dunaway (bass) and the returning Marc Droubay (drums)... In 2014, singer Jimi Jamison passed away... and former bassist Stephan Ellis passed away in 2019 (R.I.P.) Lead guitarist Frankie Sullivan has kept Survivor touring occasionally w/ a rotating cast of musicians, but w/ no new music since ... Cameron Barton has been their vocalist since 2016.

This song was SOOO HUGE for months! Also, I just assumed it was sung by Journey, which is a compliment, I suppose. I think the beret is a nod to a group of citizens in NY who decided they were tired of crime on the subway. Curtis Sliwa was their most famous member (even though most of them were black or hispanic), and they literally called themselves Guardian Angels.

It was Stallone and says I want a song with Rocky 3, they said well can we see a little bit what we’re working with. So they send about 10 minutes of the movie They watch it. They think it’s cool. They write the guitar part they call Sly back. We need to see the whole movie to write this song so he send them the whole movie with the promise that it comes right back. They got the name of the song from the line where Apollo said you had that Eye of the Tiger man, and then they wrote the song they had the music they put together lyrics for Eye of the Tiger. Great story.

😂 I did a fire-baton routine to this song back in high school, circa 1985. At the end, we put our fire batons down and lit part of the field (safe, and on purpose) to show our school letters: SRHS. GO Bulldogs!
