One of my favorite scenes is where they pick the ball up in the outfield and Tanner who plays shortstop yells "where's our shortstop". Buttermaker sits down and Ogelvie is confused about who made the error. Buttermaker says "It's an error on the outfielder, it couldn't be on the shortstop because he wasn't there" 😂😂

I still paraphrase that line from time to time. I grew up with this movie (and played Little League myself), and this has always been one of my guilty pleasure favorites. And yes, there are moments in it that can cause a person to tear up.

I saw this in the theater when it released, I was 9. Damn it was fun growing up in the 70s, there were so many good movies like this...not to mention the complete lack of parental supervision in that decade.
@IggyStardust1967Ай бұрын
Same! I was 9 and saw it in theaters as well! It's funny looking back, because that whole "lack of parental supervision" made us independent and mature beyond our years. I still blow minds of those who grew up long afterward when I tell them how I was 6 years old and learned to cook for myself, had a key to the house on a piece of yarn around my neck at age 7, knew how to get blood out of clothing before the blood was discovered in the clothing when I was 8 years old, and the only REAL limit placed on me was "being home when the street lights came on". Not to mention that, after age 7 I had to actually walk a whole MILE to and from elementary school, cross 3 major streets and a highway ALONE because we were JUST inside the "bus route" limit where they wouldn't pick you up (two blocks over, and I'd have gotten a ride to/from school). They don't believe me until they do the research themselves and hear the same exact claims out of others who grew up at the time. Let's not even mention being able to walk into a store with a simple note and cash to buy someone cigarettes and alcohol before we were teenagers. What a difference nearly 5 decades make.

I grew up in LA in the 70s and The Bad News Bears is my go-to nostalgia movie if I ever want to feel young again. The cars, the locations, the trees, the architecture, the advertising in the background; it checks all the boxes for me.

I hella grew up in the Bay Area but we had cousins down in LA and would visit frequently. Saw Jaws down there and Bad News Bears among others. Yes, very much on the nose for mid-70s Los Angeles.

Me too. I was 12 in 1976. This film was so accurate for that era. The real 1970s.

I played in little league in 1975-1977. The coach drank beer in the dugout. Had us lean into the ball at the plate to get hit. He took us all for ice cream in his station wagon after every game. We were undefeated as the 1976 Dodgers.

Walter Mathau made a career out of playing an ill tempered jerk, so it was rather fitting to have Billy Bob Thornton do the remake 😅 The original Odd Couple, Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men, all with Jack Lemmon, are also great.

The opposing manager was played by Vic Morrow, who, along with 2 child actors, was killed in a helicopter accident while filming "Twilight Zone: The Movie" 1982. Another good movie with a young Jackie Earl Haley is "Breaking Away" 1979.

When I heard you say charming and sweet in the intro, I thought that this could go one of two nuanced ways: 1. "That's not funny, that's sick!" in a disgusted tone. or 2. "That's funny because it's sick!" in a delighted tone. Time to find out. And.remember: Tom Sawyer was a.book about kids FOR kids. Huckleberry Finn was a book ABOUT kids FOR adults.

Another unplanned scene is when Rudy Stine has to pitch because Amanda is sick. He gets a ball hit right back at him and he yells out "SHIT". It makes me laugh every time 😂😂

Oh my god, Lauraaaaaaa! Yes!!! Ok, ok: first off, I need to connect this to another reaction: Last Picture Show. Directed by Peter Bogdonovich. After that he directed "Paper Moon", starring.....Tatum O'Neal! She got the Oscar, youngest Oscar winner ever! Then she made Bad News Bears! If you love Bad News Bears and Last Picture Show, you will love Paper Moon! Please please I beg of you to put that on your list, that movie is the greatest! / But so is this one! This what passed for a kids' movie in 1976! Ha! Even in a kids' movie, the realism of the 70s cinema, so frickin' great! Warts and all! I know there's shocking stuff in this movie. But you watch this and then you know "Dazed And Confused" got it 100% correct! In 1976, it was Tatum O'Neal in Bad News Bears and Jodie Foster in Freaky Friday, Bugsy Malone......and Taxi Driver!!! 🤪 And Rocky! Rocky didn't win at the end of that one either! Gotta love 70s cinema: there are no happy endings! Network, All The President's Men and Carrie, they all came out in '76 as well. Really great year for movies!
@TTM96915 ай бұрын
PS: I didn't even talk about how great your commentary was....as usual! I wept right along with you. I saw this when I was 7, when it came out. Saw it a bunch of times soon after, but I probably hadn't watched this since the early 80s. Over the pandemic I rewatched it, and I couldn't believe how I basically had the same exact reaction to it as I had when I was 7! I was crying, I was laughing, I was cheering.... Your understanding and analysis of human nature and character was spot-on, as always. Ok....Paper Moon! 1973! A must! That movie has Laura written all over it! Tatum O'Neal is AMAZING in that movie, and she's only 8!

Kelly Leak wuz robbed!!! Since getting the dvd I've watched that last play over and over and Kelly definitely got under that tag. As in MLB, the Yankees own the refs. And in game 2, Tanner beat that throw to first with his headfirst dive at the bag. Two times the refs effed.up and should have started a bench-clearing.brawl.

I loved this movie as a kid. It was definitely a different time back then, you could never make this movie today as the old saying goes. As a kid i don’t think i ever had a coach that didn’t yell at us or call us names to push us to work harder. Most never took it personal because at the end of the day we still knew the coaches cared and just wanted the best out of us. The things my football coach said to us at age 12 would probably get them arrested today. 😂
