Oh my, I miss her so much. She was so unique. And almost everything from the Cranberries was wonderful.

This breaks my heart, knowing she’s gone. I’m a full blown metalhead and have been for 38 years, since I was 12. I’ve been to more concerts than I can count, and the single, only non metal concert I ever went to was The Cranberries. After hearing Dolores’ voice, I had to see her live. I instantly fell in love with her voice as soon as I heard it. She was absolutely ethereal in concert and her vocals were so spot on it was awe inspiring. There were subtle differences, so you knew you were hearing her live performance, but it could have been the album vocals if you weren’t paying too much attention. I was just in awe of her, her presence and her talent. When I heard she had passed and joined the ranks of other phenomenal voices to never be heard anew again, I was absolutely heartbroken. To pass on the eve of going into the studio to lay down vocals on Bad Wolf’s cover of Zombie….that was so incredibly sad to hear. The cover came out great, but her vocals would have turned the cover into a force of nature. Now she’s in the company of greats like Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, etc. She is so sorely missed. Even though I didn’t know her personally, her singing meant a lot to me, as her songs are tied to very specific times of my life, like the birth of my first and only child. When I heard she passed, I shed tears, and I’m not afraid to admit that.

The yodel is actually keening, Used in Irish lament singing when words cannot express the grief. Also used by Sinead o Connor.

You MUST know „Zombie“ by the Cranberries! There‘s nobody who doesn‘t know this song! And if you don’t know it, it should be up next! Their third famous song is „linger“, which has a similar feel like „Ode to my family“

I dont know what it is but irish singers have some sort of magic to them. Just the tone. The emotion. Sometimes that yodel. Its just magic.

A soft, mostly quiet yet resonant song. You can hear the strains of family, love and experience in it. Many years ago, I sent a digital copy of it to my mom for Mother’s Day. She is the other major music fan in our family; I’m certain I get my love of it from her. And she liked it a lot, saying that it was very poignant and sweet. Which I agree with. R.I.P. to Delores, thank you for the music and the touching odes to many things.

Dolores is keening, Irish lament singing which sounds like a yodel. Most Irish female sing with keening.

The "yodel" as you call it is an Irish tradition called Keening. It's not quite as obvious with Sinead O'Connor but she does it too. Check her out too👌

Zombie is probably their best known song. It is about The Troubles. Watch the official video first. She had arranged to lend her vocals to a cover by Bad Wolves, but was found dead the morning she was supposed to be in the studio. They released it in tribute - another good option to watch after seeing the original.

I was lucky enough to see them live in the mid/late 90's, i loved them so much. She was a tiny woman, 5'2 but her voice.......... the power that came out of that tiny frame was astounding. I loved the way she sung, and not hiding the Irish twang while singing. Im not one to get overly emotional when a celeb passes, but her death hit me hard. Theres only two famous people that died and it affected me in a way. Her and Chester Bennington. Maybe because i loved their music a lot, not sure. But both were a big loss. :(

Jennifer! I'm not super familiar with the Cranberries but this is a really nice song. Listening to Dolores sing it's clear it was a big loss when she died. Near the end where you're describing the feel of the song we both used the word "longing" at the same moment. She's remembering her childhood and her relationship with her parents as happy but maybe something came between that and she's longing for the happy childhood. Really interesting song. I liked it as well. Great reaction and analysis as always Jen.

Great breakdown 👏 Delores amazing voice was single handedly responsible for somehow making a Limerick “cool” in the 90s (quite an accomplishment as to some ears it’s an accent that has more sharp edges than a bag of hammers 😉)

Do a reaction to Zombie & official video (turn-on captions ~ lyrics), but with Zombie it is critical to listen to song thru first & just enjoy, be amazed, touched. Then analyse after you have recovered! Context. it is about an IRA bombing in Warrinton that killed two boys and Dolores anger that it was done in the name of Ireland, done in her name (watch Fergal on the drum, represents her anger & frustration). Really powerful song, don't know anything else like it

Hello, this video starts up really bad, when you say you do not know The Cranberries. But it can be forgiven. Maybe. This is how. Lately, I have listened to virtually all possible reaction/analysis videos on their songs, and yours is by far my favorite. So, thank you for the nice analysis. Now, if you actually want be forgiven for your dreadful sin, and if you genuinely liked Dolores' voice, you shall not stop here. "Ode to my family" is a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful song, but it is a sweet, delicate one and it does not showcase her greatness in full. And you have one aggravating factor: you actually did comment on "Zombie", but you picked a cover - a funny, interesting one to be fair, but, as often the case, a lost cause when compared with the original version when the original version is so epoch defining. Fine. But do you really want to miss out on one of the most incredible performances in the history of rock music? So, I am begging you, please do it, do "Zombie" by Cranberries (make sure to use the original video, not the live version; and make sure you have tissues nearby), I am sure lots of people out there really want to hear you commenting on Dolores O'Riordan magical voice, deep interpretation, subtle acting and human engagement at its best. You surely have seen the video by now, so I wonder, can you really not comment on that? If you will, together with my forgiveness for ignoring the band till this video, I will pass you a few suggestions of barely known, incredible voices that might tickle your curiosity.
