Did you guys catch the ad on Netflix for Mike Flanagans shows & movies, & Netflix actually used the words something like enter the "Flanaverse". I was surprised to hear that. Is that the reason he doesn't like it I wonder? I thought it was cute when yall said it, but I wasn't aware & Quinn mentioned he doesn't like it so I'm guessing he can't be happy at all then that they put that ad out there like that. I was like hey that's a Badd Medicine phrase & Netflix stole ur idea, but that's pretty crappy they would still use it if the creator himself doesn't approve.

It broke my heart, but it was perfect for the story. One of the deaths had to be an unquestionable tragedy with no chance for justification. Especially after episode 7, where it's so easy to keep riding high on the "Freddie deserved it" energy, straight through to Roderick and Madeline. It was thematically necessary to have that strong, heartbreaking reminder that, oh yeah, this isn't a story of righteous vengeance, this is a story of two deeply selfish people selling their children for money and security.

I appreciate that both Madeline and Rodrick had the same ending as their parents, Felt very symmetrical like Verna says
@VonPatzy Жыл бұрын
I think it’s interesting as cold as Madeline was as a person she was always less in denial about the night at the bar. Even though it faded like a dream she never had kids and while she strove for immortality she also applied her AI tech prematurely to Lenore instead of herself. Roderick not only condemned his two actual children to an early grave over a cocktail that night he also went on to have FOUR MORE kids doomed to his poisonous money and early death. If ever there were an argument for a vasectomy.
@ms-literary6320 Жыл бұрын
I think that Rodrick knew the whole time and was just lying. He lied all season about not believing it given he saw Verna in his house in the first episode. His theme all season is denial (the drug is fine, my parenting made my kids stronger etc.) and then his confession boiled down to “I knew”.
@IrishPieceofTrash1 Жыл бұрын
It's so interesting that Madeline started off as the way more cutthroat of the two but as they got older, that seemed to reverse. At the end of his life Roderick was at the point that he genuinely didn't care about the people he hurt, denied anything was ever wrong and never took ownership for what he did (well until Verna brought him back just to confess to August) Plus worst of all he had more children, knowingly condemning them to an early death. While Madeline, as cold as she was still, did express more care (in her own way) for the children as she got older. Turning up to Tamerlane's launch and involving Lenore so much with the AI project which was clearly so important to her to achieve. Roderick may have cared for Lenore too, but that seemed like it was in a detached way, just as much as he was to his children. As evidenced by the fact that her Mum was going through absolute hell at the hands of Frederick and all Roderick cared about was him being the swing vote with the board members.
@ct6852 Жыл бұрын
The visual of those falling bodies piling up outside the board room in the rain was really strong. Appreciate how in this Flannagan series the last episode truly felt like the climax of the story and not the epigraph. The whole cast nailed it.

Leonare received a raven feather, because Verna took the form of a raven, with a white rose tied to it. Unlike the other characters, Verna placed the object gently on top of the tombstone, underlying Verna's love and respect for her

There's actually implication that Verna was responsible for Pym going to work for the Ushers; after all, best for the family to have an ace fixer to uphold the deal of them always escaping the consequences of their action until the time came to pay up. And since Verna was very much aware of Pym's talents having encountered him on the Trans-Global Expedition, she knew who to send to the Ushers.

There was an interesting parallel between Madeline and Rufus. Annabelle Lee called Madeline "small" the last time she saw her, and to someone as ruthless and brilliant as Madeline, that was one of the greatest insults. Madeline knew that Rufus, for as crude and vile as he was, was equally as ambitious as she was, so she knew that writing what she did on the brick would be as deep a verbal cut as she could make. Thank you for such thoughtful reflections throughout the series. It makes a vicarious rewatch all the more enjoyable.
@CarrieF90 Жыл бұрын
It's a beautiful thing to watch an being of fate and consequence, a creature that came from another plane, another world who can brutally make good on her deal, be so kind and gentle and regretful of certain aspects of her existence. She truly liked Lenore, loved her for her kindness and empathy, for her ability to stand as an uncorrupted light in the middle of what the Usher's were. Lenore's death tore me apart and the expression of sorrow on Verna's face only added to it. For a moment, you think, maybe she'll spare Lenore, but then you realize that that's not how consequence works. Lenore's death is on Roderick's hands. He took a deal and had children knowing full well what would happen and in turn, his child had a child, the best and brightest of them, and Roderick didn't care enough to have the forethought of what that could mean. Verna gave him a choice, every step of the way, and he used those choices to hurt people. Even so, Lenore's light lives on and she saves millions by one simple act of love and defiance.

@agm5424 Жыл бұрын
My theory on Verna is that she's a type of cosmic being, something similar to The Endless from Dc comics. The best explanation I've read from a commenter in another video is that she's one of the beings that dwell somewhere beneath the earth, as in hollow earth, outside of time and space, a place that can only be reached from a mythical island somewhere in the north pole region called Ultima Thule that Poe mentioned on his poem Dreamland. That's why she told Arthur that she came "top side" to the world, and that she saw her in the "ice" in the north and in ep seven Roderick said that Arthur told the kids stories about people living under the earth, wich was probably the writers hint at what she is.

I'm pretty sure she is a Jinn for multiple reasons. 1st, Jinn can weave in and out of space and time, as Verna can. 2nd, they can take human or animal form, as verna does, often appearing as a raven (Verna spells raven). 3rd, they are said to be made of smoke and flame, Verna dissipates into smoke and leaves soot on Madeline's hands. 4th, they are said to inspire poets and artists, there is lots of poetry from Roderick. 5th, Jinn are the basis for genies, who make wishes come true, as does Verna. 6th, Jinn have free will and can be either good or bad, or anything in-between, and Verna appears to have her own moral code, the morality of the Ushers influences how she kills them.

@ms-literary632010 ай бұрын
@@Marzipanilla I think the split happens at Madeline’s Mrs. Muldoon speech in Ep. 3. They set up the choice between Annabel and family life, and Madeline and cut throat success. Rodrick comes home with his raise and his bonus. He’s disappointed but kind of accepting, partly because Annabel is celebrating. Madeline changes the mood by monologuing about how charging at a situation got him locked in a closet as a child (invoking a trauma reaction which affects how he responds to her ideas). She hints at making a plan (come at it sideways, be sneaky). She ends with the imagery of Rodrick bricked into his childhood closet. Or he could be the one with the trowel. Cut to Annabel making plans for their future and says she doesn’t like Madeline. Rodrick responds by getting poetic at her. They seem in love. Two important women in his life and two paths to choose from. There’s the split.

OMGOSH you gentlemen are babies! 😆 I was born 12/30/1984 I 'm an 80's baby. My favorite characters in Fall The House Of Usher is Verna and Juno. Verna is an anagram for Raven. Verna is not the devil. She is not even evil, she is an executor of fate, an executor of karma. She is a shape shifter. She manifests to each person the moment before their death as they can see her. Verna is offering these people the most honest conversation they will over have in their lives. She offers them the chance to make a better decision, to do a good thing. Make a different choice. She is like a raven always watching from a vantage point. Watching these people, she could see into your soul. She allows people to tell the truth in a way we rarely do. The family is like an instrument that she can play with perfection. My favorite episodes are 2,6&8. You guys are in for a wild ride.

I just finished your base reaction, and I'm popping down here before your breakdown of the series to come say something I've wanted to say the whole series but had to wait. My comment here is through the analytical lens of ethos(credibility and ethics), logos (logic and reasoning), and pathos (emotion and feelings) for anyone unfamiliar with these terms :) So Mike's shows ALWAYS make me cry. They are always so jam-packed full of emotion and pathos and just so much I can empathize with. That's one of the staples of his shows. I'm empathy incarnate when I watch shows. So I was very flabbergasted as I watched this show to realize he wasn't going for pathos on this series - at least not as the main drive. Because even I - Miss thinks-about-a-sad-scene-and-cries - wasn't crying. ........ and then Lenore. It's like Mike saved every single ounce of pathos and slowly built it up in her so that the juxtaposition of her death compared to everyone else's would hit that much harder. Verna's speech to her - where she outlines how much good Lenore would bring about just by being brave is beautiful, and I think it's an absolute MASTERPIECE that Mike managed to craft this show that could reserve all empathy until that singular moment. This show is full of so much ethos and logos - which let's be real, Mike's stories ALWAYS make us think - ALWAYS makes us consider ethics. But by reserving Pathos until Lenore, the other two become the highlight of this show. And I think it's INCREDIBLE. How often does the show focus in on the logic or the ethics? That's what makes Madeline's speech and even Verna's to Pim so impactul- they call upon the viewers to reflect on the absence of ethics in the show as they relate to reality and ultimately ask us if we, like Mike in his directorial decisions, are withholding pathos in our own lives? That question is critical because I think the underlying theme to this show is that you can be the smartest person in the world - you can think yourself justified in purpose, but the moment you remove yourself from empathy, you lose.

49:08 I do think part of Madelyn having that speech is to show how the people in charge justify these decisions for themselves. They’re not entirely wrong, but they’re not using this information for the better, they’re exploiting it. And of course, how is it everyone else’s fault that doctors prescribed them “ligodone”? They trusted their doctors, not all were like that but likely most of them were. It’s also why I feel Juno is there, she shows how someone just got in an accident and got put on the drug while they were under and became addicted to it/switched addictions from heroin to ligodone. Was it really _all_ her fault?

The way the same actors gets used multiple times in Mike Flanagan's shows reminds me of the cast that come back each time American Horror Story does a new season. Brilliant How the good actors can do this and make it seem new and fresh every single time

I live in Baltimore, near downtown. Every year, near Halloween or Edgar Allen Poe's Birthday, I see roses and cards scattered around near his grave at the Westminster Church. After this series, I wonder how much traffic the site is going to get.

I loved it this series so much cool mine It's definitely one of my favorites by Flanagan. I have a soft spot for Midnight Mass because a lot of people think it's too slow, but for me that's a story that builds and builds and builds to such a crescendo of insanity and horror that it was just amazing. The study on fanaticism in how people rationalize even the most evil things because of their beliefs really got to me.

Mike Flanagan has never disappointed so far! I highly recommend his other series The Midnight Club, it's got a lot of familiar faces and some of the new faces from this show were there first like the two assistants and Roderick's wife!

I would 100% turn Verna down. life is suffering and chaos mostly, and that's what makes the happy times so great: the contrast. if everything was perfect all the time, we wouldn't be able to truly appreciate happiness. even if I had to live 100 years in poverty, I'd choose that over 50 years of a life like the Ushers had. their lives looked absolutely miserable. Midnight Mass was my favorite of Mike Flanagan's shows up until this point, however, The Fall of the House of Usher has become my favorite by a tiny margin. this is truly his magnum opus and I have thoroughly enjoyed your reactions! thanks, guys! 😃

This falls as #1 on my Flanagan list! Loved it! Lessons for us all but especially for the rich & powerful… Verna=Raven, a transposition of letters. She wasn’t death or even evil - she was opportunity/karma & an interested observer of choices that we humans make. Perhaps she is symbolic of “God”, but one that puts us here & turns us loose to live as we will, without interference. She is a complex character &, I believe, also an internal moral compass which, it seems, was usually ignored in the family dynamic where narcissistic/sociopathic tendencies ruled. I love how he wove Poe’s psychologically insightful stories into a social commentary using the lives of a predatory pharmaceutical company (Fortunato = Purdue) & it’s ruling family (Ushers = Sacklers) & how they destroyed millions of lives predicated on a lie about their premier drug (Ligadone = OxyContin)… way too coincidental! So much more to be said about Flanagan’s talent & depth of discernment in exposing uncomfortable societal/personal truths. Knocked it out of the park & I am a big fan!

I have to say. The Fall of the House of Usher really went head to head with Haunting of Hill House in my mind for best Flanaverse series.
@greentiger33211 ай бұрын
Verna honestly seems more like a reflection of everyone's inner thoughts and turmoil than anything else. Prospero loves his hedonism but also knows somewhere inside that what he's doing is wrong which is what Verna tells him, Camille knows why she hates her sister and that she could have been great allies together, Leo tries to throw money and drugs at his problems to make them go away but they never truly do just like the cat never goes away even after crushing its skull. Vic knows she wants to be famous more than anything and is trapped inside her own thoughts and desires while Tammy knows what kind of life she could be living if she just relaxed and opened up with her husband. Fredrick is so warped from what he feels he has to do to earn his father's respect and approval that he honestly hates himself for what he's doing, which is reflected in how Verna despises him.

As great as this show was, I and many others actually disagree that that was Flanagan's best. Personally, I still think that Midnight Mass is unsurpassable, and the same claim could be made about Haunting of Hill House. If anything was missing in The House of Usher, it was the heartbreaking drama, the devastating combination of horror and heart that's where Flanagan shines the brightest . So, different people have different rankings. Let the poor guy discover this amazing creator without bias ☺️

We do know what would have happened if they hadn't taken Verna's deal. Remember we were told, if Roderick hadn't taken the deal, he would have been a poet. "A broke poet, but is there any other kind?"

This show was amazing. It is definitely my favorite of Mike Flanagan’s shows but my favorite of all his projects will always be Doctor Sleep. The actress who played Lenore was absolutely amazing it that movie.
@caggles Жыл бұрын
"And my soul, from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor" - said while Lenore's body is on the floor in front of him. 25:50 Absolutely perfect. God. I also really feel like Auggie's speech at the graves is a message to the Sackler family (basically the IRL Ushers) and everyone like them, basically saying that this fictionalization of them is all they deserve, that their actual story, with whatever justifications and explanations it might include, just isn't worth telling. Its a very poignant idea, IMO.

I have SO been waiting for y’all to react to the last episode. Y’all did not disappoint! My favorite throw away line from Verna was when the actually went there and she said (paraphrasing) You could walk in the middle of main street, shoot someone and you wouldn’t get in trouble (a la Trump) BWAHhahaha!! 🤣 I’m glad they let Henry Thomas stretch his acting chops and play a bad guy. Even Flanagan’s “Ouija: Origins of Evil”, he played a good guy. I cannot wait until the Emmy nominations come out. Carla’s name had better be on that list! Yeah, I get what’s going on with strike but I’m going to be so mad if she’s not nominated, along with the writers! Gents, I’m going to say it again, you need to watch “Penny Dreadful”! It’s better than this, but I can’t say by much. And as for “Pitch Perfect”… never more!!! I’m afraid I’m going to have to miss that one, but y’all have a great time with it.

Oak might’ve been onto something (as always) when he mentioned how Roderick kept having children, knowing they’d be doomed, and not caring. I’d suggest he did care and maybe was subconsciously careless with all their mothers. The more children, the more time he gets right? Since Verna told him he’d essentially go last. He made sure to enfold them into the family after they found him, as if to show that YES, THESE ARE MY CHILDREN AND I CLAIM THEM ALL. As long as they were his blood he didn’t turn them away. He may have loved them in his own way, but he had sold most of them out before they were even born.

I think the only reason I could rank this number one of all the Flan-series shows is because I'm watching your censored version. Had I watched the full uncensored version, I wouldn't be able to sit through all the gore. That said, amazing story, and the actress who played Verna is 10/10 in anything she's in. It was a really cool series, and I'm happy I got to watch it with everyone else in the Badd Medicine community!

Roderick ultimately proved to be more ruthless than Madeline because knowing that 2 children would for sure die, he had more children while Madeline had none. The other children were corrupted by the money so ended up having brutal. Lenore was a good person so was taken peacefully. It was a gut punch when she had to die. The acting and writing was incredible. Also, I finally hit the subscribe button after lurking since the awesome One Piece reaction.

While Hill House will always and forever be my favorite series in the Flanaverse, Usher quickly became my second favorite. Verna is the Raven. And the raven tells him 'Nevermore'. I thought Madeline would have figured out a way to 'transfer' herself into Lenore's body with her A.I. tech, to live forever. I was disappointed with only the online presence. But at least Lenore had a true legacy that would help people.

I still prefer Midnight mass over this. That's probably because I knew the ending of this one-the deaths of every family member, including Lenore, whereas Midnight mass ending surprised me. This show was great though. It's a shame Mike is done with his mini-series. Would've loved to see more of similar projects.

Ok so not that every detail has to be perfect, so I’m wondering if it was deliberate? But when Verna goes to the cemetery at the end, it shows Rodricks and Madeline‘s DOB as 1950 but in the first episode, the year was 1953 when they went to their Dads house, making them 3 yrs old. But clearly they were a lot older?
