Yes, Gaultier designed the costumes, but his designs - like the sets - were based on the work of French comic artist Moebius. In particular his "Incal" series. The whole movie is like a love letter to his art.

Well, the movie is based on the works of Girauld, aka. Moebius - while it has it's own story the general world design has a lot of his "Incal" comic series. And Moebius did also publish in Metale Hurlante, the magazine - so you're not wrong. :D Actually Girauld worked on this movie as a set designer himself, so basically he got to work on a hommage to himself. :D

Fun fact. Ruby Rod was originally imagined to be played by Prince (who turned the role down). When the original outfit designs were presented to Chris Tucker, he apparently refused because they were too garish. So they showed him a "new" set of designs that were even more extreme so he went with the originals.

I saw this in the theater when it came out and there was a group of young (high school aged) black guys sitting behind us. In my mind this movie is inseparably linked with their reactions and commentary, which made the movie even more hilarious. You probably had to be there, but man I was almost crying I was laughing so much.

This is one of my favorite Sci-Fi films that isn't Star Wars or Star Trek. Hugely underrated and wildly imaginative. I always love it when I'm in the mood to watch this one because I always walk away feeling satisfied. I love the inspiration director Luc Besson drew from old French Heavy Metal comics, just as Ridley Scott did for 'Alien.' I'm not sure, but I wonder if Ron Cobb worked on the set design for this film as well.
@commanderkruge
@commanderkruge Жыл бұрын
He was indeed inspired by Heavy Metal. Specifically by one artist in it: Moebius. The whole set design is pretty much from his "Incal" comic series. (actually Moebius himself worked on the movie as well). Moebius (aka Girauld) also worked on Alien - he designed the spacesuits - and on Tron. He did a highly praised Silver Surfer album for Marvel and in the documentary about him ("Moebius Redux" - you can find it here on youtube) you'll hear Stan Lee load the highest praise upon his art.

That's pretty impressive, given that the woman who plays the Diva, Maiwenn Le Besco, and the woman who sang the song, Inva Mula-Tchako, are two totally different people. Even more impressive since the last part of the song was digitally strung together. It was thought that no human could sing those notes fluidly in such quick succession, so they had Inva sing the individual notes and then they were mixed for the song. Not sure who told you this story, but the only performance they were hearing was the playback of the digital mix and the actress acting the song out. I imagine it's hard to disguise lip-syncing on a film set.

Fascinating reaction. You guys were drawn to the very essence of what Luc Besson is known for: that being the aesthetic. In actual fact, Besson came out of a movement called 'cinema du look' in the 80s and 90s that was known for placing more importance on style & spectacle over narrative. Hence the over stylised sets, costumes and performances that you both loved. One of the things I love about Bessons films is how they are a French persons attempt at bombastic Hollywood and therefore have this weird transatlantic vibe...His masterpiece is probably Leon...which you guys should deffo react to

If you want more of the same, watch Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. It's by the same director and based on the same inspiration as this film. Back in the 90s, Luc Besson wanted to make a movie based on a comic character called Valerian, but I think he couldn't get the rights and/or felt that he couldn't do it justice, so he made this film instead. Then in 2017, he got the rights and made an official Valerian movie.

This films a masterclass in visual style. You have costumes designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier worn by supermodels (Mila Jovovich, who plays Leeloo, was at one time, the highest paid model in the world) and the set design was by legendary artists Jean Giraud (more famously known as Moebius) and Jean-Claude Mézières (another legendary artist who is famous for the graphic novel series Valérian and Laureline). Luc Besson, the director of Fifth Element, would go on to write and direct a Valarian film 20 years later. This film was and is amazing to this day for those to aspect alone, and Chris Tucker's outstanding performance 😂 Originally, Luc Besson wanted Prince to play the role, but they couldn't get him. Tucker has also said he wanted to play the role differently, but was so happy that they told him to play it as they wanted. It remains one of his most favorite roles.

It's not divisive at all. I've never met a single person in my entire life that doesn't like the Fifth Element, short of people who just plain don't enjoy sci-fi movies.

Quite frankly, it's an execise in French humor, it goes over the head of most Americans (and probably British too). Even the McDonald's scene to an American is just product placement, to an European it is a joke, like in "look in the future we have flying cars but we didn't manage to get rid of McDonald's".

I happened on this movie by accident long long ago. I love scifi but the back in the day promos for this did NOTHING for me. But it happened to be on, I started watching, and got sucked in immediately even though I had no CLUE what was happening. And even after all this time I still LOVE watching this movie. So much fun. And the editing (I used to be an editor) is OUTSTANDING. Loved watching you two react to this, especially coming in not knowing anything. You are both gems. Such a fun experience, as usual. Thanks!

Ash! Hannah! Great job. Fantastic reaction! I highly suggest putting this on in the background and semi-watching again. Not because you missed anything, but simply for the vibe and soundtrack. It's such a well crafted piece of art the way the movie flows and is accompanied by subtle melodies and orchestration. My particular favorite tracks are "Love is worth saving & Protect Life ~ Eric Serra". Check it out.

Funny thing Ash, Ruby Rhod is partaking in a live podcast that streams across the entire universe. ------- Luc Besson formulated this idea in the '90s, thinking this is how the future would be 300 years into the future. --------- Little did he know it would only take 30 years for mankind to pull off the technology to make a live podcast not only possible but commonplace from the comfort of your living room. HA -------- So think of Ruby Rhod as a modern version podcaster attending a live event like Coachella. He can take his content to trillions of folks across the entire univervse. -------- It's coming faster than we can ever imagine.

Nice surprise to see the legendary Lee Evans in the film. Speaking of legends, I can’t believe nobody in the comments mentioned Trip Hop legend, Tricky having a small part as Zorg’s right-hand man! I’m not even on that side of the pond and I know about him! Could be my age. Is Trip Hop even still a thing? Anyway, great review and keep ‘em coming.
