@Nakna_ankaN Жыл бұрын
What elevates The Fly over the vast majority of horror movies, in my opinion and what hits you even harder on repeat viewings is the psychological aspect of the transformation, how Brundle is slowly losing his mind to the fly. Casting Jeff Goldblum and him portraying such a likable character also adds to the tragedy of what becomes of him. When he puts the shotgun to his head at the end, serving as a reminder that regardless of what he may look like, part of that likable character from the beginning of the movie is still in there hits you hard. Also there is no real villain in the story, even the fly is just staying true to its instincts, it's just a great tragic story. One of my absolute favorite movies, regardless of genre.
@neil2444 Жыл бұрын
It's the classic monster horror with the added psychological horror that you see how the monster was created. In that way it isn't just a horror, it's also a tragedy. And somehow in all of this, it has some of the most disturbing elements I've seen in any horror film ever. It's like you took the most disturbing parts of The Thing, and you added a human element.

The first time I saw this movie I didn't realize that my younger sister was in the room watching it with me. When it was over, she came out from where she was hiding just sobbing and I thought it had scared her. Turns out that she didn't consider the movie scary, she thought it was sad and she was crying cause she felt bad for the characters, crying so hard in fact, that our mother heard and I got in trouble for showing the movie to an 8 year old. Great reaction! I think a lot of people go into this movie expecting pure horror and getting a tragedy instead and it's great how the movie can really toe the line.

It's difficult to find a horror film that leaves you disturbed. Jump scares are cheap and easy and commonplace nowadays. Even scary is not that difficult to achieve with a proper story. This film was uniquely disturbing and it sets it apart from other horror films.

Interesting factoid with the baboons... is that they can get quite aggressive with males of any and all species including their handlers... but Goldblum is a tall imposing guy and oozes charisma, and when the baboon met him, it immediately became subservient to him which made filming a lot easier as Goldblum could keep the animal calm and under control without even needing the handler.

Hi Kat! The 80s really were the golden age of practical effects in movies. This was a remake of a 1958 movie with Vincent Price (!) There was a sequel to this movie starring Eric Stoltz and Daphne Zuniga, Stoltz as Brundlefly's son who continues his work to find a cure for his mutations. There is a reveal of the fate of Stoltz's beloved dog (which got teleported partially inside out, but survived) that was genuinely horrifying.

Some hypothesize that if you teleport, you are destroyed from the home destination and then recreated in the target destination. So the original you is destroyed and a new you is created. The most puzzling aspect is the computer not only choosing to combine the two but turning the fly component into a retro-virus, allowing it to rewrite his DNA.
@jackcoleman17849 ай бұрын
My understanding was that they were spliced but for some reason the effects of the splicing took time. Not that the fly dna was turned into a retrovirus. Granted I get why you say that because that's exactly how a retrovirus would work and not how splicing would work as far as anyone knows.

Awesome reaction! Random thought: if they ever create a reboot of The Greatest American Hero, you're a doppelganger for Connie Sellecca (back in the early 80s). You'd need to absolutely audition for that.

Brundle-Fly: "Life will find a way." *Transforms into final horrifying form* 07:15. Kat: That's SO CRUEL. Wait until she sees The Fly 2's dog scene. Ironically, that monkey scene actually revealed an interesting aspect of the tele-pod technology - it's not a 100% teleportation technology, but rather an "mirror effect", like seeing 2 images of the same person standing side by side looking at each other. The explaining of "fixing the problem", however, made no sense, because he would have needed to RADICALLY redesign the teleportation system to take that into account. An interesting side application of the tele-pod technology (with some modifications) would have been to create quantum doubles. 09:42. Yup. It's been hypothesized that genuine teleportation isn't so much the "moving" of people from location to location, but the breaking DOWN/destruction of a person's bodily integrity (transmitter platform) and reassembling/making an exact copy down to the quantum level of the person at another location (receiver platform). There has, however, been a question about a person's soul, and where that would go during this destruction/creation process, since you are essentially "destroying" the original body, and making a quantum copy of the original, like an organic photocopy. (it's incidentally the same argument made for humans transferring their "consciousness" into robot bodies or cloning themselves - all of those are "copies", except when you PHYSICALLY transfer the brain of the original body into either a robot body or clone body, but then it's an ALTERED version of the original, in various ways, depending on the story being told). 20:35. You ain't seen NOTHING yet. :P (if you want to know what is happening to the character, read up on flies sometimes. Some of what they are showing is DIRECTLY tied to the biology of a fly - 23:48) 22:14. You are one of the few people who has said that. The fusion means that there is no way to "split" the different DNA's apart again. His doom was pretty much sealed the MOMENT the teleportation system activated with him in it along with the fly (the first time), the movie only reveals that fact much later on in a non-verbal way. Another side effect of the tele-pod technology also seems to be some kind of "addiction" (but that could either be Brundle's own psychological issues prior to being teleported OR the mixed DNA creating all kinds of side effects like changing brain chemistry leading to all kinds of weird and aggressive behaviors unlike his normal personality). Also, continued teleportations seems to have an potentially acceleration effect on his mutation - but it is unclear whether it's his HUMAN DNA that is mutating, the fly DNA that is mutating, or the fusion effect becoming quicker. 24:25. That's actually a clue to what is going to happen in the second Fly movie (26:13). Also, the infection reference is also funny, because it kinda highlights another horror movie franchise in totally unrelated way, namely the MIMIC franchise. 28:02. As a side note, you will note that the more deranged Bundle-Fly gets, the more of a mess his lab becomes, almost as a metaphor for his deteriorating mental and physical condition. 32:14. And so, dear reader, another uber-horror fan was born. :P 37:44. Of the most horrifying things in this movie, that throughout the ENTIRE movie, there was a still a person in that body, even when his/its body was completely transformed. That part there at the end, was him/it still knowing what the right thing was, even when he/it had 2 conflicting parts to his mind and personality at that moment, and you could see him struggling with his old nerdy, somewhat anti-social and shy self and new abusive, aggressive, toxic selves in the ENTIRE movie. He knew in that moment that there was no going back to his old self (even abandoning his new fusion idea because his machine was trashed) and resigned himself to being terminated because just like there was no going back to being a human, there was no way for him to fix what he did to the love of his life. He knew he failed not only at creating a revolutionary technology (that would now be shut down due to its horrific applications), but he also failed to do right by her, both as a lover and a good example of a future father (seen in The Fly 2).

Thanks for your reaction. Some other classics you have to react to: - Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) (the dread and hopelessness in this film are unparalleled in horror to this day) - 28 Days Later (a modern classic w/ the best music score I've ever heard in a horror film) - The Exorcist (still widely regarded as the scariest film made in cinematic history) - Suspiria (2018. A modern interpretation of a classic about a covenant of witches) - "Rec" or its American remake "Quarantine" (American remakes of foreign films are often a step down from the originals but Quarantine is an exception). An incredibly harrowing underrated horror film in POV about a viral breakout in a hotel.

I have 2 requirements when it comes to my 80's era sci-fi/supernatural horror film's. 1) Will there be puppets in this film? 2) Are those puppets going to be wet? I'm talking spritzed with a glossy sheen, coated with shiny goo. I want the cast and crew to have been uncomfortable due to the humidity on set, wet puppets. Fortunately, The Fly has some of the wettest puppets ever committed to cinema, just look at those effects. I still get sick to my stomach all these years later, whenever Jeff Goldblum's wett prosthetics start oozing off, and I can't eat anything for a solid hour after the acid vomiting on the creepy stalker ex's (who, also turned out to be the protagonist of the film which is hilarious to me) hand and ankle.

Ok, 'wet puppets' is a phrase that somehow I've only recently been introduced to and that was through the channel Scaredy Cats. Mil-Dread loves the wet puppets.

"Poor guy didn't even get no wings" Well, you know what they say? Every Time a Bell Rings a 🪰Gets His Wings. All I know is I didn't hear no🔔did you? BTW you do know Davis and Goldblum married a year later and appeared together again in 1988's Earth Girls Are Easy, And they were only together for 3 years, when they asked Gena why, she said because that Guy wasn't all that Fly 🤷♂ I myself prefer practical effects over CGI any day, Great Movie! I'm glad you liked it, and another great reaction as always.

I'm telling you the movies of yesteryear will never be matched by modern ones. Nowadays they rely heavily on cgi, noise, music- loud at that, jump scares. Back then it was quite the art - make up, art, acting, directing, plot, etc
@CalciumChief Жыл бұрын
Like John Carpenter's The Thing, this is now considered an 80's classic, but both movies are actually remakes of 50's films. The first is the one people always spoof, like on of Simpsons' Halloween episodes. The transformation there happens instantly and it's all about build-up to the reveal. Once the 80's came around, the effects have gotten much better and were allowed to be gorier, so this one is a slow body-horror. 38:01 You should be.
