Me and a good friend of mine are both from a Socialist country in south-east Europe, although it hasn't been Socialist since 1991. In 2019 this friend of mine travelled to Cuba for his vacation, he always wanted to go. He told me of a story, as he was taking a cab to the place he was staying, he asked his driver if he knew of the country where my friend and myself are from. To his surprise, he said he visited it in the 80's, before the civil war of the 90's, and he said it was a beautiful country. They talked for most of the time about various topics. At the end of the ride, my friend asked the cab driver what was it like when Castro died. The cab driver responded that Castro is not dead. When my friend was obviously confused and asked what the driver means by this, the man smiled and thumped his chest: "Fidel lives in the hearts of eleven million Cubans!"

Fun fact - Marlon Brando and Robert DeNiro both won Academy Awards for portraying Vito Corleone (Brando for lead actor, DeNiro for Supporting Actor). (Other times that different actors have won Academy Awards for portraying the same character - Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix for The Joker and Rita Moreno and Anita DuBose for Anita in West Side Story.)

Michael doesn't know who did it. He's going at both Frank and Roth to see how they react, but he's doing it in whichever way they would each respond to. Frank is emotional and sentimental, so would respond to that; Roth is cold and clever, and knows enough about Michael not to buy an emotional reaction from him.

The flashback parts of the movie are based on several chapters in the Godfather book. Some of the scenes are nearly word for word, including a deleted scene that shows how Fannuci, the guy in white suit and hat, gets the scars on his neck...
@Praetorian881410 ай бұрын
Exactly this. The 'present-day' parts of this movie, that aren't Vito Corleone flashbacks, are not from the books at all. Also there really were a ton of deleted scenes from this movie. Like the fact that Don Cicci's men actually came to Young Vito's house and *that's* why his mother insisted on going there with him. Not to mention when he returns to Sicily, he kills more than just the Don, but two others that played a part in his family's demise.

I'm in San Francisco. The way I understand it, Roth sent a man to pretend to try to kill Frank and to indicate that Michael had sent him; probably he intended to have someone working for him intervene and pretend to save Frank, so that Frank would distrust Michael and go over to Roth's side. But because a police officer happened to show up at the crucial moment and stop the apparent assassination attempt, Frank ended up distrusting Michael as Roth had planned, but instead of joining up with Roth he joined up with the authorities, agreeing to help them get evidence to arrest Michael.

Rochester, upstate New York. Lakes, parks, wineries, and a shockingly high crime rate for such a small city. I know Coppola worked a lot with the book author Mario Puzo when adapting the first one, and _Part II_ was basically written from the ground up by Puzo and Copolla together. Robert De Niro was discovered while casting for the first one but by that point Copolla had run out of roles to give him so waited and called him back to play the big role in the sequel. My understanding is Al Pacino and Robert De Niro don't get along too well IRL, so it's very rare to see them appear on-screen together. Even in the movie _Heat_ (which is a masterpiece worth checking out) Pacino and De Niro hardly ever appear on the same frame.

My mother's grandfather stowed away on a ship that passed through the Strait of Magellan on its way to San Francisco in the 1890's. He changed his name to hide from authorities when he got here. But that's another story. By the way, my neighbor's wife across the street is from Venezuela. She came here in the 1990's, long before Chavez et al. Her nephew, however, came here to live (and play baseball) five years ago because of the troubles. Paying the mafia to keep them from wrecking your business is called a protection racket.
