Vito figures out that Fanucci isn't really connected. Every time they see him, he's alone. They never see him with a gang. When Vito gets rid of him, the neighborhood thinks he conquered a powerful enemy when it was really just some lying con artist with no friends, so their gratitude is huge. He builds a real organization on top of the fiction he destroyed.
Thanks, great comment. Explains a lot that the movie didn't have time to cover.

there was a deleted scene where Fanucci was beaten and robbed and when he cried out for help nobody came. Vito figured out he was a phony early on because he never had any bodyguards and collected "protection" money himself, that's why he wanted to offer Fanucci only $100 because he planned to kill him and it was a way to get Fanucci to trust him.

The rise of Michael is really the heart of these two films, and it was intense to watch in many ways. He reached his father's prominence and power, but somewhere along the way he lost his father's heart for family. He became cold. He wondered to his mother about losing his family, and he did. He became a loveless Don.

Vito built an empire by balancing acts of violence with acts of kindness, which evoked sympathetic solidarity in the community. He was asked to be the literal godfather to many grateful families, and that gave him power over their generations. That's why he ended up surrounded by loving family. Michael didn't have a natural sense of love and kindness. He just didn't get the point. That's why he married Apollonia in Sicily; not because he loved her, but to get into a local family and surround himself with people as a defensive measure. Everything Michael did was a strategic move, and his only tool was fear. So he spent all the goodwill his father accumulated and ended up alone.
@brandonb.53042 жыл бұрын
I think his move to marry Kay was more strategic than him marrying Apollonia. He was struck by her beauty and presence when he first saw her; he wasn't on the prowl for a wife as some strategy. Of course, it didn't hurt to marry into a local Sicilian family and gain allies, but he definitely seemed more 'in love' with Apollonia than he did Kay. He basically married Kay because he needed a wife and sons to inherit the business, like a king.

What really gave Fredo away is when he admitted knowing Johnny Ola very well after previously denying he knew him at all. With that he knew that Hyman Roth had gotten to Fredo.
@gluuuuue2 жыл бұрын
The end flashback scene is so incredibly done and just.. symbolic of so much. Like, we know from the first movie Michael's cunning, particularly in how he protected his father in the hospital. But we know he's also educated. He seems to be the first one to go to college, because Sonny mocks him as the "college boy" suggesting what Sonny thinks of higher ed, which wasn't as common as it is today. And he drops all that to go do something both his father, the family patriarch, and oldest brother don't respect or value: risk his life to fight for the country, for other people. So although young Michael was very quiet and soft-spoken, we know he's very much also kinda the rebel of the family and had no interest in following in the family business. His brothers' reactions to his announcement he's enlisted in the marines all suit their personalities: Sonny reacts with aggression and dismissal, and condescends the choice; Fredo is congratulatory and conciliatory in a sort of non-assertive way; and Tom, the thinker, tries to reason with Mike against it. Michael just accepts Fredo's congrats but with no deeper engagement, and calmly rejects the other two. Vito then comes home, but we don't see him kind of representing his absence in the film, while everyone else departs to meet Vito but Michael stays alone, mirroring how they've each sort of left Michael's side (to be with dad). And Vito's story ends surrounded by family, even in death, while Michael has lost his.

DeNiro is actually speaking Sicilian, a distinct dialect of Italian (almost an entirely different language), but he learned Sicilian for over a year I think, so he had a pretty good grasp on the language when they filmed this. Also, the hearings are Senate investigations into the mafia (hearings that actually happened in the U.S. in real life) which were aimed at stamping out organized crime. Obviously the film took real life investigations and just applied them to the fictional Michael storyline, but it shows that Michael's not only dealing with conflict from other people in his business (Roth trying to kill him, his brother betraying him) but also the government (trying to charge him with crimes and imprison him), something his father never had to face.
@brandonb.53042 жыл бұрын
@@petera618 But there are many, many Italian words and phrases used in the Sicilian language, and most Sicilians can understand and speak Italian, so in reality, the languages are closely linked. They may have developed separately, but they've merged into somewhat similar languages. Maybe "dialect" was the incorrect word, but they're such a shared language considering they share a country that they're more closely related than not.

The U.S. Senate held many hearings on organized crime in previous decades. Coppola did a remarkable job of recreating one for this film. The Senators asking questions are character actors as are some of the various lawyers and aides sitting beside them. Harry Dean Stanton plays the FBI agent who lights Frank Pentangeli's cigar. They used to allow smoking cigars in capitol buildings. The fat cats are still peeved that they no longer can, but it's a great improvement.

@22:55 _I think she knows what's best for her children._ I agree. Furthermore, unlike Vito Corleone, Michael doesn't love his direct family. Remember he married too soon after he left to Sicily & when his wife (Apollonia) died, he went back for Kay not for love but because he as a heir (soon to be Don) needs a "wife" and a "heir" (& that's also why he asked Tom Hagen whether the "miscarried" baby was a boy). In short he thinks of *being a godfather not as really being a part of the family (what Vito did) but as a power that needs a family.* For Vito Family came first (both blood family & "business" family) so he chose his allies carefully for they become family (remember Frank Pentangelli's words about Vito'd opinion of Roth). That's why he also refused entering a deal with Sollozzo & the Tattaglias. The movie sets the contrast between Michael & Vito very clear as Vito (in both movies) had seldom a scene without his direct family & especially children in the same scene. Go back to the first movie & notice all the family/kids noise when he was meeting requests in the day of Connie's wedding, when he returned from the hospital & even when he was shot & when died in the tomato pitch. As a result Vito was a softer heart than Michael. Both like to win & succeed but the price Vito was ready to pay was much lower. Just remember his reaction to Santino's death: "No revenge should be taken. The killing stops now." Maybe Vit was luckier than Michael he could afford that, but most likey Michael brought his own failure by being so stiff.

I’m Italian (Italian-British) and yes, De Niro’s ‘Italian’ is very good. Of course, the character is speaking in a sort of mixed dialect between Sicilian (because Vito spent his former years in Sicily and Neapolitan because he’s grown up in a more likely Neapolitan neighbourhood in New York). I don’t know if De Niro himself could actually speak Italian or if he had vocal coaching for his dialogue in the film… more likely the latter (I think).

@@BlueShadow777 I mean that’s part of Michael’s character, not Pacino. Michael is more Americanized. He’s a second generation American, removed from the Italian culture. Vito was first generation and was actually born in Sicily. Pacino purposely butchered much of his Italian to portray this removal from his Italian roots in his attempt to more American. It’s also why he fought for the U.S. in WWII, to the objection of everyone in his family. Remember when Sonny says, “Your country’s not your blood, you remember that.” And Michael responds, “I don’t feel that way.” Michael wanted to be thought of as an American, not the son of an Italian immigrant. Pacino could certainly learn the language and speak it well if he wanted to, and if you notice, Michael speaks Italian to Frank and his mother much more fluently than he could ever speak it in the first film. As Michael stepped in to his role in the family, he got closer to his roots and accepted his Italian heritage.

14:22 and 14:49 In the 1950's, the Senate conducted hearings into organized crime and its influence on organized labor. Hyman Roth mentioned Estes Kefauver. That was a real senator. He chaired the committee that conducted the investigation. The Kennedy's (John and Bobby) played key roles in those investigations. John as a Senator and RFK as counsel to the committee. That is when they first investigated Jimmy Hoffa - who disappeared a decade and a half later. In the 1960's, a man named Joe Valachi "sang" before a committee, spilling his guts as to the operations of organized crime. The public knew very little about it until that time. The second movie is tough to follow, with the deceptions about who tried to Kill Michael, and who tried to kill Pentangeli. It takes a few times, or some internet checking to get a full handle on it. First, you have Michael telling Roth that it was Pentangeli who tried to kill him, and then vice versa. In reality, Michael is lying to Roth. Michael wanted to close that Cuba deal and he needed Roth to be alive for it, so this is why Michael is cozying up to him. As Michael said later "Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer". Then, the entire scene at the bar where Pentangeli was getting strangled was staged. Roth orchestrated it. Roth wanted Pentangeli to think that it was Michael who was trying to kill him, so that Pentangeli would turn on Michael. Pentangeli was left alive on purpose (though he doesn't know this.) Then, Roth would tip off his (dirty) people in the government about Pentangeli and Michael, so the government could launch an investigation. Hence, the hearings. The government would then offer Pentangeli a deal: Not face the death penalty and live on the Army base, in exchange for testimony against Michael. By this point in the story line, Pentangeli is one of only a handful of people who could directly incriminate Michael, and since he thinks Michael lied to him, he decides to testify against him. Why didn't Roth like Michael? Michael claimed it was because Roth thought he would live forever and he wanted Michael out to keep more money for himself, but I think (and it could be wrong) it was because of Mo Green. Anyway, Michael shows up at the hearing with Pentangeli's brother, which simply means "I can kill your entire family if you testify against me." This is why Pentangeli then changes his story and says he doesn't know anything. When Tom & Pentangeli talk, Tom basically says that if Pentangeli kills himself, his family will be taken care of. In that short time frame, the Corleones had located Pentangeli's brother in Italy and brought him over. Third confusing thing you caught on to. Yes indeed, Tom orchestrated the prostitutes death in a way that made the senator think he did it. I did not get this the first several times I watched it, so good job! This situation resulted in the senator owing favors to the Corleones, so a big change from how he treated them in the beginning. 1:20: Hyman's illness was probably congestive heart failure. 3:50: It matters because Michael needs boys to run the family business some day. 12:00: Roberto likely found out that Vito was the one who had killed Fanucci. Or, just that he was a powerful figure now who had replaced Fanucci. 16:10: "Look at that shot". This is one my favorites. The Lake Tahoe region is one of the snowiest places on earth, and they really did a beautiful job capturing this. 31:15: Fredo was the only person who supported Michael when he enlisted. :(

This movie expands the scope of the story. We see the seeds of doom being planted, and we see what the Corleones reap. Vito just wanted to provide for and protect his family. But his choices set a course where corruption consumes everything. I think Fredo was dumb enough that he thought he was sneaking those guys onto the property so they could talk to someone, maybe even someone like Tom. Someone else was paid off to leave the curtains open. I think that's why Fredo said he didn't know it was going to be a hit. He knew those guys were there, he let them in, but he was too dumb to realize what would happen. If Fredo was the one who opened the curtains then even he would know what that meant.

Great reaction. Godfather 2 is also my personal favorite! There's so many layers to uncover in this sequel! You can watch it over and over again and discover things you may have missed on the first watch. In Godfather 2 Michael took his father's words to heart when he taught Michael to "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer." So that's exactly what Michael did with Hymn Roth. With Michael you have to read between the lines especially with Hymn Roth who was a great adversary against Michael! It felt like I was watching a chess match between Michael and Hymn trying to outmaneuver each other! And Vito's background story makes this film even more of a Masterpiece! I feel you should definitely watch The Godfather Part 3 next even though it is not as popular as the 1st and 2nd one. The 3rd Godfather still has a interesting ending! Pay close attention to Connie in Godfather 3 you could tell she spent too much time with her brother Michael! 🤣 Enjoy!

Just like the first half of your reaction to this movie, and just like your reaction to the original "Godfather" film, this was FANTASTIC. So happy you loved it! Two things to recommend: the following year (1975) Al Pacino (Michael) and John Cazale (Fredo) made an INCREDIBLE movie based on a true crime story: "Dog Day Afternoon". Not only is it one of the great movie of the 19702, but both of them are amazing in it. (John Cazale is NOTHING like Fredo in that movie! He died a four years later, tragically, leaving a legacy of only five films, all of them classics). ALSO: the only mafia film that is as great as the first two Godfathers: "Goodfellas" (1990) De Niro is in that. SUPER classic and a very different mob movie. The Godfathers you've watched tell the story of the mob from the early 1900s to the 1950s. "Goodfellas" tells the story from the 50s to the 70s. (There's another great mob movie with Pacino and Johnny Depp: "Donnie Brasco". Both that and "Goodfellas" are true stories). LASTLY: Another film from 1990 is one you should watch. It's called "The Freshman" and it's a comedy in which Marlon Brando parodies his Godfather character. Now that you've seen the first two films, you'll get all the jokes! Both that and "Goodfellas" are FIFTY times better than the bloated, studio cash-in that was the third "Godfather"....and they came out the same year! Anyways, LOVED the reaction, and love your channel!!!!! THANKS!

As dark as Michael becomes, he would never kill the mother of his children. Maybe if she testified against him, I don't know about that.

The shame on Frank's face when his brother saw he was about to become a rat, even if Michael did tried to have him killed he wouldn't accept him handling like that as a state witness, he was a true Sicilian.

You asked where you should go if you can to the states in your last video. Lake Tahoe and Reno(where the family lives in this movie) are a little over a 2 hour drive from Northern California/San Francisco. If you're interested in some amazing countryside.

Even though De Niro is of Italian origin and has an Italian citizenship, I'm pretty sure he couldn't speak the language and that, therefore, he was dubbed in the movie. Then, ma'am, since I was born in Sicily and perfectly understand that dialect, I wonder: did you get any words just by listening to it?

They wouldn't pay him what he wanted...On the other hand, Brando was set to appear in that flashback scene at the end but simply didn't show up for work the day it was filmed. I like what they did without him better, highlighting Michael alone at the table instead of shifting audience attention to a few seconds of Brando.

I really enjoy watching your reactions. First you are so beautiful and lovely. Second, it's funny to me to watch girls that are not American react to this movie. You get it, and I feel for you and the struggle you've been thru. That Georgia dream may have meant something....I live In North Carolina not far away.....come to the South East of the US you will love it. In my town it's 35% Hispanic....we love and have fun here in WS..NC

I used to think Part II was better than the first movie, but I now think the first is slightly better (not by a lot though). You should read the book. It helps connect a lot of things you don't pick up from watching the films. However, the movies are far, far superior to the book, which includes a lot of pointless storylines Coppola wisely left out of the movies. I enjoyed your reactions. And by the way, it's definitely possible to hate Castro without liking the corrupt, brutal Batista regime that he overthrew. Both were terrible for Cuba.

I also like the first movie better, just by a hair.

I'm with you on the 1st film. As to Batista and Castro: Batista is a corrupt and brutal strongman, all too common for that time and place. Castro represents a much more dangerous ideological incubus. The history of his regime includes all the aspects of the strongman but with the ideological fanaticism to spread totalitarian ideology throughout the region. His efforts went even further and included attempts to destabilize African and Mideast countries as well as supporting terrorism on a worldwide basis.

It's so heartbreaking seeing Fredo in the flashback be the only one to support Michael's decision to join the army during WWII considering how things between he and Michael turned out. Fredo was always Michael's ally, but neither Vito nor Michael made Fredo feel included which ultimately led to Fredo's betrayal. Such such a good ending with Michael sitting all alone at the table while everyone else is in the other room celebrating Vito, cut to Michael sitting alone in the present--his family not with him again.

Michael knew that Fredo always said a prayer when he was fishing. Under Catholicism, if you die while praying you go straight to Heaven. Michael killed his brother but did it in a way that would save his soul.

Re: Christopher Columbus (13:51) I find it fascinating that not only are CC’s achievements completely ignored by today’s youth, he’s now also become someone akin to Hítler or Judas. Now yes-I understand he offends Zoomer sensibilities & yes-I don’t believe he should be considered an American hero as he’s been in the past… HOWEVER… Refusing to recognize what he did for the Western world generally, or his nautical achievements specifically, as anything other than ‘great’ is nothing short of an expression of one’s ignorance.

I love your reactions, and especially when you can't stop yourself from dancing when you hear Latin music. 🙂 I'm glad that you liked the Godfather. Godfather 3 is worth checking out for the sake of curiosity, but it's not worth reacting to. It's not the world's worst movie, it just suffers in comparison to the other two (which are both masterpieces).

Some people's dislike of The Godfather 3 has to do with the casting of Sofia Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola's daughter. (She had already appeared as the baby who was baptized near the end of The Godfather. Someone said the baptism scene was her best performance in any Godfather movie.) Sofia herself thought she shouldn't have had the role, and she didn't think she'd played it very well. In this movie, I have to say I think the attempt on Frank Pentangeli's life was deliberately botched. He was choked just enough to scare the hell out of him, and he heard the assassin say it was Michael's doing. Roth had set it up with the Rosato brothers to turn Frank against Michael. Roth's plot was foiled when Frank's brother showed up and gave him a look that said, "Don't do this. You don't rat out a Mafioso to the authorities. Kill him if you have to, but never involve the authorities." Frank got the message, and went back on his promise to testify against Michael. At least, this is how I see it. The Senate held a number of hearings on organized crime. They actually were held in the early 1950s. They were initiated by Senator Estes Kefauver. Hyman Roth mentions his name in the hotel in Havana.

Micheal suspected it was Fredo but only confirmed it when Fredo let it slip he was recommended the exhibitionist show by Johnny Ola, Fredo was not supposed to have any contact with Johnny prior, so how on earth did he get such a recommendation?
@barryscott80412 жыл бұрын
Yes, a key moment! The Senator says "Freddy, how did you find this place?" and Fredo, like an idiot, with his brother standing right behind him, says "Johnny Ola showed me this place....." Michael's face says it all. When Michael and Fredo had drinks earlier, Fredo said "I never met him"-----Johnny Ola
