Hannah is right. That look at Katniss gave Haymitch told him that she had a plan. Her vote shocked him, but he got the message and backed her up. Just to clarify, Katness never romantically loved Gale (though he was interested in her). Its not so clear in the movie as it is the book, but Katness never wanted to have a family of her own because of how difficult life in 12 was, and didn't want to have kids that could end up in the Games. She does care for him deeply, and tries to have a romantic relationship with him, but she was never *really* invested. For her, I think Gale represents her past and is familiar, whereas Peeta represents hope and the future.

Katniss gets so much more messed up by the explosion in the books, shes recovering in the mansion for weeks, like her whole body gets burned and skin grafted. And her PTSD is insane she just wanders about and gets lost and screams until she's found and taken back to her room. Also the mutts are so much scarier, they're designed specifically to make Katniss terrified. Snow already knows she's traumatised by mutts from the first 2 games, so he designs these ones to smell like roses to trigger her PTSD, and they whisper her name constantly so it echoes through the tunnels. As they're running away they hear these weird scary noises, and Peeta tells them that's the sound Avox's make when they scream due to having no tounges. Peeta knows from hearing them be tortured next to him in the Capitol. Just all round really effed up Snow is a sadist man.

Gale meant betting on violence and revenge. Peeta meant choosing life; in fact, the first thing we see him doing after everything is planting those flowers, creating something beautiful and honouring Prim. In the books, after the war she refuses to have kids for years because she still fears that something bad will happen and she will have to see them going through horrible things. Her life with Peeta, who is so positive and nurturing, eventually changes her mind enough for her to dare to have kids.

And even in the first book we had this story about Peeta as “life” and Gale as “surviving and fight”. Peeta was a one who gave Katniss opportunity to live (by giving her a bread). He gave her and her family a time of life and because of this she later had oil and bread and started hunting. Gale was a one who she find in the woods on hunting - and he was a one who helped her and reached her to hunt better - to survive, to fight for her life. Katniss before Games and on Games needed to survive but after the only thing she needed is peaceful life - not revolution that was Gale story. And since the beginning you can clearly understand that Peeta was her person

Also a "symbolic" hunger games of just the Capitol politicians and soldiers is also the morally unjust and wrong thing to do, Ash. No matter how awful their actions were, those soldiers/politicians/Capitol citizens also had families who would have further contempt for the new government. Capitol citizens would have contempt for the move too and more division and hate would grow out of it. More hunger games would further normalize the idea of them. And using them as punishment against political enemies would also perpetuate the games' existence and legitimize them as practical -- and then we're back where we started, turning into what we fought the war to end. Its like Beetee said, both sides need to come together and view each other as one people and find peace. As Katniss says to Gale, "Killing is ALWAYS personal."

Speaking as a retired Army officer, Iraq War veteran, and student of history, I feel like this movie truly shows what war can do to people. It can make them vengeful and hateful towards each other, as they think of more and more horrible ways to kill each other. I feel like this is what the recent movie Civil War was trying to do, but it didn’t do it nearly as well.

The way Prim's death was filmed puts us in Katniss' mind set. We know she's dead because we're told by many characters we trust and what we've seen corroborates that but it doesn't feel real. But seeing Buttercup just makes everything real. This is the moment it hits Katniss - and us as the audience- that Prim's dead. Her little sister, the reason she volunteered in the first place and fought a damn war for... is gone. Prim was the one who paid the ultimate price. Not just because she was young but because she represented what a future in a free Panem could be. Her death is the most tragic one in all the series imo. Donald Sutherland who played President Snow (R.I.P) said once that he accepted the role because he wanted young people to understand how wars begin, the bad people who start them and how it's always always always the innocent that pay the highest price. This series, now more than ever, is so relevant and important. Thank you Ash and Hannah for the great reactions and giving everyone here the space to discuss it ✌️

Hate for Gale... That's one of the few things the films doesn't manage to get across to some viewers. They have enough imo, but it doesn't seem to, as I said, get across well enough for many. Gale has great trauma himself, and both him and Katniss are actually pretty "cold" in a way. Or rather, not all that sympathetic. Peeta is the sympathetic one. Funnily enough, I remember she frequently refers to a "fire inside" for her and Gale. And how they are alike. But as he grew to hate the Capitol more and more from afar, she actually killed the people up close, and she learned about the capitol from the inside, so you could say she found her empathic side. Gale in the meantime had to just take on responsibility and pure oppression back home, only to then end up in District 13 where he is turned into a soldier. So as Gale turns colder, Katniss turns somewhat "warmer" over the course of the story. But to begin with they are more of a match. And thus in this last movie, Gale is mostly giving cold soldier. He's not a jealous angry schemer like Ash seems to think. Not to go deep, but in the book he technically gets more cold than in the movies.

I didn't see anybody in the comments talking about this so I'm gonna say it. The thing about Tigress is she didn't always look like that and she didn't do it to herself because she wanted to. When she said she was a stylist "until Snow decided I wasn't pretty enough" she meant that Snow forced her to do those surgeries to make her look like an actual tiger. So... There's that... Also! Yes, Gale killed Prim 😬

To me, the scene with Buttercup is the most heartbreaking. Throughout the war against the Capital, Katniss hadn't had the time to mourn about the people she's lost, especially Prim. I loved how Buttercup didn't even move because he knows how Katniss felt loosing Prim and let her vent out her emotional baggage after going through so much as a 17 year old. That purring at the end of the scene just the figurative cherry on top which signifies their bonding through loosing the one who they loved. Another thing, Tigris' connection with Snow is saddening once you guys watch The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

I actually agree with Ash about Gale ! I don't like him at all. The more I think about it, the more I see those movies, or read the books... the more I can't stand him. Not only did he chose a path of violence and said heinous things ! I mean, YEAH district twelve was bombed and most of the people in it died. That is more than horrible ! For the children, for everyone, really. But being okay with doing that in return is not grief ! It's being a terrible person ! HOW can you justify exploding the entire complex an burying civilians under it (their is probably children in it too !) ? HOW ? It doesn't matter if their military forces helped destroy twelve. The civilian DID NOT, the children DID NOT ! And you want what ? To kill them in the same atrocious way ? That is despicable. After that, there is his bomb idea, (which ends up being the one that kills Prim !!) which is the second most despicable thing he does ! Because, planning a second explosion to kill the medics ??? WHAT THE HELL ? Killing soldiers in war, is one thing. Killing civilians is despicable. But killing medics... He doesn't seem to have a conscious anymore ! He's just working on hatred and vengeance. Before that he was no perfect person either, the way he treated Katniss concerning Peeta and her return from the games... The only reason she kisses him those several times, is because he manipulates her. Maybe not completely on purpose, but still... He even admits that she only kisses him when he's sad. But he still makes it so she would feel sorry for him, and so kiss him ! Or else, WHY telling her "this is where you kissed me" or "I don't stand a chance if he doesn't get better"... ??? He consistently makes her feel guilty for not sharing his feelings or for having feelings for Peeta. That's not love, that's crapy and awful. The only thing that could be in his favor is when he tackles the peacekeeper in the second movie. And that's not even what really happened in the books ! Or that he tried to save more people in district twelve ! But he tarnished it with is path later on. That's only my opinion, but... I wanted to put it in words, because I really don't like Gale XD And when you see Peeta as the other male lead... The contrast is so clear, that he appears even worst for me. It was always Peeta, for Katniss in the end. Since the first games ! She didn't know. Because she didn't recognize it. But in the books, it's clearer. She says it ! Not only in the end, with her beautiful monologue. But also, with her thoughts when she kisses Peeta in the cave, or in the quarter quell. She feels something when she kisses him and says so in her thoughts. She technically knows Peeta before Gale too, because she owes her life to "the boy with the bread" but she also associated him to Hope and life. That's why her first thought in the first hunger games, when she hears Peeta's name for the male tribute, was "oh no, not him !". Or in details : "Peeta Mellark! Oh, no, I think. Not him. Because I recognize this name, although I have never spoken directly to its owner. Peeta Mellark. No, the odds are not in my favor today. I watch him as he makes his way toward the stage. Medium height, stocky build, ashy blond hair that falls in waves over his forehead. You can see his struggle to remain emotionless, but his blue eyes show the alarm I've seen so often in prey. Yet he climbs steadily onto the stage and takes his place. [...] Why him? I think. Then I try to convince myself it doesn't matter. Peeta Mellark and I are not friends. Not even neighbors. We don't speak. Our only real interaction happened years ago. He's probably forgotten it. But I haven't and I know I never will.... [...] It was the boy. In his arms, he carried two large loaves of bread that must have fallen into the fire because the crusts were scorched black... The boy never glanced my way, but I was watching him. Because of the bread, because of the red weal that stood out on his cheekbone. What had she hit him with?... The boy took one look back at the bakery as if checking that the coast was clear, then, his attention back on the pig, he threw a loaf of bread in my direction. The second quickly followed, and he sloshed back to the bakery, closing the kitchen door tightly behind him. [...] At school, I passed the boy in the hall, his cheek swelled up and his eye had blackened. He was with his friends and didn't acknowledge me in any way. But as I collected Prim and started for home that afternoon, I found him staring at me from across the school yard. Our eyes only met for a second, then he turned his head away. I dropped my gaze, embarrassed, and that's when I saw it. The first dandelion of the year. A bell went off in my head. I thought about the hours spent in the woods with my father and I knew how we were going to survive. [...] To this day, I can never shake the connection between this boy, Peeta Mellark, and the bread that gave me hope, and the dandelion that reminded me that I was not doomed."

Ash . . . I wholeheartedly disagree with putting Snow and his men in the Hunger Games. "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere". MLK Jr. And Coin's idea was to put their children in the games who are completely innocent of their family's crimes.

You can like Peeta, and dislike Katniss and Gale as a couple but Gale saved Katniss’ mom and Prim from dying in 12 and took care of them while Katniss was away. To hate Gale is crazy to me.

The final symbolic hunger games would've been with the Capitol's children (such as Snow's grandaughter) not the soldiers and generals. That's why some of the victors were pissed about the idea.

I’ve been watching this channel for a long time now and discovered it back when you uploaded the lord of the rings reaction. Back then I was just a lonely teenager but since then I watched every video you would upload and now recently becoming an adult I’m starting to understand just how much of an impact your videos had on my life. So even though you don’t know me I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart with the joy and passion you put in to your videos you gave a very lonely boy something special to find joy in and I genuinely might not have been here today if it wasn’t for the happiness you gave me. On behalf of everyone else you’ve brought happiness to thank you ash.

Are you going to watch the next movie, Ash? The Hunger Games: The Songbird and Snake (2022)? It's a prequel about President Snow life during the 10th Hunger Games. Pretty great. There is also a movie coming next year called: The Hunger Games: The Sunrise of the Reaping (2025) about Haymitch life during 50th Hunger Games (Second Quarter Quell) where the special thing is there is 48 tribute in the arena, 4 from each District. It's crazy and it's a tragedy for our boy Haymitch
