@@AnxietyRatexactly right, it’s a thing done at funerals in District 12
@rbrtck9 ай бұрын
The meaning of this gesture evolved over time. The original meaning was a farewell, which is why it was and is done at funerals. In this movie, they're saying goodbye to Katniss, but in a way that sure feels like it shows her the utmost respect for her selfless sacrifice. Because most everyone is aware of this stuff going on, it evolved into a symbol of respect and honor. Then I think it became more like a salute, and ultimately a symbol of resistance, rebellion, and freedom. The same thing, pretty much, happened with the mockingjay symbol. Cinna might have thought he was being at least somewhat subtle with her transforming mockingjay wedding dress, as he usually was, but it wasn't subtle enough, so Snow had him put to death. He saw what the intention was, and indeed, the mockingjay would be fully adopted as a symbol of freedom, with Katniss herself as the living embodiment of this symbol, based on one of her main character traits: angry, indignant, righteous defiance. Fortunately there were others to handle the more nuanced planning and scheming. 😉

The book is all from Katniss' point of view, so the movie adds scenes outside her perspective. She's in the arena for close to two weeks, and they reduced the amount of time she spends with both Rue and Peeta in the movie. After she places the flowers on Rue's body, she received a gift of bread from Rue's district 11. You definitely get more development of their relationship in the book. Katniss loses her hearing in one of her ears from the explosion, but has her hearing repaired after the games by the Capital. Peeta actually has to have his leg amputated after Katniss places a tourniquet to keep him from bleeding out. He is given a prosthetic by the Capital after the games, but this only happened in the book. The Mockingjay pin was given to her by her friend from school, Madge, as her token. It had previously been worn by Madge's aunt in the 50th Hunger Games, which Haymitch won. None of the backstory about the pin is in the movies, and it kind of bothers me she just grabs it out of a bin in the black market in the movie. District 12 has been mostly ignored by the military Peacekeepers. Most other districts have much stricter monitoring to help stop any potential rebellion. The districts also cannot contact each other, basically the only time there is much contact between the districts is during the Hunger Games. Viewing the games is mandatory, unless you are close to dying, but anyone who doesn't watch is arrested. Sponsor gifts also increase in price the farther you are into the game, and medicine would cost more than bread.

The reason they stopped them from killing themselves at the end of the game was not because of the love story, it was because they need a winner. Powerful people in the capital bet on their favorites, there is a lot of money going around in the background. That is also why there are sponsors. If you have bet on someone you probably will try to help them win, if u have the means to send them some help. So not having a winner because of a rule change the game maker decided out of the blue would probably cause a riot among the “investors” :)
@BK-eo5bb9 ай бұрын
No, it was because of the love story. Seneca Crane knew how popular the couple was, and if they had turned on each other and tried to kill each other, then their fans would have accepted that they weren't really in love and were just venal. But because Katniss got the idea to have both of them kill themselves instead, Seneca panicked. But President Snow was furious at Seneca's decision, which is why he ordered Seneca to kill himself. The betting is not important to this. Most bettors lose anyway. If there is no victor, the house wins everything.

23:25 The reason Katniss didn’t go for the bow and arrows is that she was specifically warned by Haymitch that it was a trap. It was placed in the center of all the gear as a deliberate attempt to lure Katniss into the slaughter grounds. Haymitch had guessed (correctly) that Katniss had already made too big of a wave throughout the country with her actions and was standing out too much over the other tributes. Her growing likability was also perceived as a threat by the authorities. Katniss volunteering as tribute to save her sister was also viewed as the first of many acts of defiance against the system because she was going against the established order. So the powers that be wanted her gone as soon as possible, preferably in the first few minutes of the games. Thankfully for Katniss, she took Haymitch’s warning seriously.
@blanktip111 ай бұрын
7:45 So the part that really gets me about Primrose doing this for herself is that literally that fast she’s accepted that she’s alone in the world, because clearly it’s a habit for Katniss to do it for her. Otherwise they wouldn’t have put it in the film. This event she’s been chosen for is so dangerous that subconsciously she knew she was immediately on her own and probably doomed, so might as well tuck the shirt in herself.

I see the point you're making, but I feel like that's the wrong place for it. Anybody who was taught to look presentable, especially in an effort to project confidence or even in a self-soothing gesture, would do this. Breaking Bed starring Hannah. 😅 Bisexual panic started for Ash in the first movie 😂 bcoz of Cinna. For most of us, it’s on the next one. Helpful details from the books : 1. Peeta burnt the loaves of bread on purpose to give them to Katniss when they were 11 yo (the movie didn’t cast younger version of them, it looks like it happened recently) and got beaten by his mom for it. He knew she was near dying from starvation. Katniss started hunting in the woods after his help coz she realized there’s hope. 2. Katniss’ mom went depressed and checked out mentally so Katniss was basically Prim’s only parent since their dad died when Katniss was 11. Her whole life since then revolve around survival especially Prim’s. The other aspects of her life were on pause or completely neglected. Her going outside the district fence is a crime punishable by death but her regular customers from her hunting was their peacekeepers that frequent their black market where she trades. Gale is her hunting partner and best friend that she met in the woods when she’s 12 and he’s 14. 3. The Capitol have tessera system where they’re given a year’s *meagre* supply of oil and grain for each family member but in return, the child (age 12 to 18) taking it will include their name in the hunger games x the number of family member. In Katniss’ situation, at sixteen, she had her name in 20x coz she took for Prim and their mom too. This system increases the chance of the weak and in need being reaped. 4. Peeta’s leg was amputated in the book because Katniss used tourniquet to stop his leg from bleeding out after being mauled by the mutations at the finale. This is an important detail that the movies opt to not include. 5. Haymitch won the second Quarter Quell where they reaped twice the amount of tributes (48 instead of 24), outsmarted the game like Katniss did and that had his entire family eliminated because of it. Haymitch telling Katniss that she’s in trouble was based on experience. Then he was required to mentor kids every year just to be slaughtered in the games coz they’re almost always malnourished and weak.

just wanna say that Katniss only knows about wilderness and how to survive in forest because her dad use to take her outside of the fences to teach her, people in her district wouldn't know the stuff that she does. Also not a lot of people know and it wasn't explained in the movies but the 3 finger salute means 'Thank Your for Your Sacrifice"

@@jennapecor1865Yeah, its a good adaptation on a ”what actually happens” level. But so much is lost by not being in first person, not that thats not on some level compensated for with how good the new scenes outside her perspective are.
@iuile11 ай бұрын
@@williamtimonen6814 I think the choice to go outside of Katniss' perspective was the right thing to do, otherwise we likely would have ended up with Katniss being a disembodied narrator à la Divergent or Twilight. Instead, we got a proper example of show, don't tell which was perfect for this kind of story. It makes the viewer pay attention, and there is actually a lot to pay attention to. I keep noticing new little details even after all these years.

This was my first time watching one of your reactions. You guys are great! One quick note. It's not that Katniss always misses the first one. It's thag both times she was shooting with an unfamiliar bow. Each bow (and even the arrows) has slight differences in shape and weight. The strings can be slightly different. So when you are using a new bow, it takes a shot or twonto learn how much force you need to get an accurate shot. That's why she was incredibly accurate with her own bow but needed one shot to get used to the other two.

In the books, faces of the mutts (panther-like mutants) look like the dead tributes. They have their exact eyes. Also the last guy’s “getting k worded” scene is super graphic in the books. It literally takes hours and he cries for his mom at the end. His body gets SO disfigured.

The way Katniss treated Rue after she passed away meant that Rues district sent Katniss bread. That had never happened before, where a district sent food to someone who wasn't one of their own. Everything Katniss did was unusual, yet it was completely genuine. From volunteering for her sister to how she treated Rue before and after she died.

the three fingers thing is a sign of respect for the dead, it’s done at funerals or in remembrance/respect of people who have passed. District 12 giving Katniss that gesture after she volunteered was their way of telling her they acknowledge and respect the sacrifice she’s making for her sister, and shows that they essentially view her as dead already.
@rbrtck8 ай бұрын
You're right, although I think this gesture evolved into more of a salute and sign of solidarity over time.
@annabelledrake20278 ай бұрын
@@rbrtck that happens over the course of the hunger games. At the start of the series though, it’s just a symbol of respect for the dead done at funerals. kind of like a farewell. It’s people doing it for katniss, and then katniss doing it to the camera after rue’s death, causing an uprising, that turned it into something more.
@elfhchan11 ай бұрын
Long comment, grab your popcorn lol Districts: 1 through 12, the closer you are to 1, the richer you tend to be. The richest people live in the capitol, that's why they are dressed like they are backup dancers for Cher. 12 as you saw is the poorest of them all, Katniss tries her best to hunt animals to exchange for other things her household lacks, such as yarn, fabric, etc. She also didn't wanna eat her cat because she was that hungry, that was her sister's pet and she disliked that cat a lot, the cat did too hence the hissing whenever they crossed paths. Haymitch Abernathy, Katniss and Peeta's mentor is a perfect reflection of how the Hunger Games and constantly living in the shadow of the capitol, have shaped him into a stuck-up drunkhard. He is also the first one to believe in Katniss and her way of dealing with things, even though the two didn't have the best start when they met. Katniss volunteering for her sister is a HUGE deal, they haven't had anyone who did this in a long time and that automatically puts a target on her back when it comes to other tributes, especially the careers from districts 1 and 2. It is because she is a volunteer from a no-good district, it's all about power tripping and ego boost for the careers so Katniss, to them, doesn't fit the role. Rue's death was another very important part of Katniss' development. The moment she became friends with her she showed her humanity and compassion to the world, especially District 11 (Rue's district). Katniss gave District 11's people the ammunition they needed to defy the capitol and retaliate because Rue's death wasn't justified in their eyes. Moreover, because she was so kind to Rue, Rue's district partner, Thresh, saved Katniss from Clove (The Orphan girl) and gave her the ability to save Peeta as well.

23:44 This is very true. However, historically, District 12 has won ONE Hunger Game out of the 70+ previous ones at this point. Kids from Districts 1 and 2 are literally raised and trained to go in and win this contest. That’s why they’re called “careers”. That’s what the actress from Orphan is. And Cato, the tall blonde boy. That’s also why he was so confident in his interview.

I recently listened to the audiobook, the strategy was to not let the other tributes see their weapons skills so Katniss didn't get to practice on the new bow - like a gun that you have to sight & know how it pulls, she needed to get a feel for how tight the string was, how pliable, to be able to calibrate & adjust her shot & she did it after ONE arrow in the movie but a couple in the book.

Just adding that having a SINGLE winner is a huge thing for the Capitol, explains a lot about the way they approach Katniss after the first movie. President Snow said "a little hope is effective, a lot of hope is dangerous". They wanna make sure that people know there are lines they can't cross. That there is no chance of 2 winners happening ever again. And it's not really about the ammount of the winners, as it is about the rules of the Capitol (only one winner or whatever) not being obeyed. REALLY enjoyed your reactions, can't wait for you to react to the rest of the franchise♥

Hamish might very well be one of the most tragic people of this franchise. Not only has he been through the hunger games himself, killed people and likely was also nearly killed by other he’s also the only living winner of his district. Obviously no other contestants of the hunger games from 12 are alive and the winners that 12 had before hamish are also dead now. So ever since his victory, which I believe was the 50th anniversary of the games he had to mentor two young people from his own district. Since every year the two contestants get a mentor who won the games for their district before and he is the only living candidate for that job. Imagine training, bonding with two young adults or even children every year for 25 years only for them to die in the most cruel ways possible right before your eyes and before the eyes of millions and then the capitol and richer districts even celebrating their deaths as a sport. I’d know for sure I’d turn to worse things than drinking after all that.
