I grew up on these movies. I was eight years old when the first Naked Gun was released, and had the pleasure of seeing all three, in theaters. However, I was a grown man when I found out that Leslie Nielsen had a long career in Hollywood as a dramatic actor, which is why he was cast in Airplane and the Naked Gun trilogy (besides being in the original "Police Squad" TV show), because he was the last person anyone expected to see in a slapstick, comedic role. That's also the reason why the generations preceding mine, enjoyed these movies. Leslie Nielsen and George Kennedy were both veteran dramatic actors at this point and the only thing OJ Simpson was known for, at the time, was being one of the greatest running backs of all time.
@sasamichan2 жыл бұрын
Leslie Nielsen starts with more serious rolls part of why he does comedy well. But After Airplane he was just strait up THE slapstick guy for this era. Though you will see some great stuff before his era too. He was in Forbidden Planet The Reluctant Astronaut City on Fire Spy Hard and many other films

I was 15 years old when this Movie came out. I had watched the original "From the Files of Police Squad" television show a few years earlier, and that was my very first experience with becoming mad that a TV show I loved got Canceled way, way too early! So, by the time the Trailers for "The Naked Gun" started appearing, oh man... I was NOT gonna miss it. So, I convinced my parents to take me on Opening Weekend! It was me, my parents, my 11 year old brother, and 3 of my really good friends (still talk and hang out with all 3 to this day). I have never, ever laughed so hard at a movie in my entire life. It wasn't just that we were three15 year kids laughing at the slapstick comedy... This is a genuinely HILARIOUS MOVIE, from beginning to end. I almost cannot choose my "favorite" parts, but I do remember laughing so hard that it hurt my stomach during the Press Conference announcing the Queen's arrival... when he goes to the bathroom with his mic still on... OMG! In fact, during the very few moments in the movie when something really funny was going on, I would think of that scene, and just bust out laughing agiain! It was also pretty great seeing it in a packed Theater! The entire audience was laughing hysterically for the entire time. Even my parents, BOTH parents, laughed a lot! That usually doesn't happen. I watch this Movie (and the 2 sequels) at least once or twice every year! It is still much favorite Comedy of All Time, BAR NONE.

I'm cribbing from info I absorbed from the OJ Simpson Documentary, but during this era OJ was a HUGE celebrity. You hate to admit it, but he was a good choice for that role, even when you consider he had very few acting roles under his belt and his *cough marriage problems cough* were being aired out in the tabloids during this time. The "incident" didn't occur until June of 1994, so 6 years after this film was made, but as I stated, it was already an open secret in entertainment that his marriage was not going well during the late 80s...
