The Naked Gun was based on characters created in the series Police Squad. It's cancellation was announced after 4 of it's 6 filmed episodes aired (the remaining two aired that summer.) It is said that the network cancelled it because -get this - it required the audience to pay too close attention in order for them to get the jokes.... somewhat prophetic given most of the mindless dreck produced today. And another bit of trivia - Detective Norberg was played by O.J. Simpson pre-murder of his wife and Ron Goldman six years later.

So thrilled you got to this movie and really enjoyed the reaction! As a Canadian, I have to say that Leslie Nielsen was one of Canada's most beloved comedy actors. 🇨🇦 Its kind of strange to think that he spent the beginning of his career doing drama and western movies. It wasn't until his well received role in "Airplane" that his comedy talents were really showcased. Then came the "Naked Gun" roles, and the rest is Canadian comedy history!

Nielsen has IMDb credits a mile long. He did the well-liked SciFi "Forbidden Planet" in 1956. He was Debbie Reynolds' boyfriend in "Tammy and the Bachelor" (1957). He was on TV in the 50s and 60s, in Rawhide, The Untouchables, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Route 66, cop shows, medical shows, Westerns, pretty much everywhere. He was the doomed ship's captain in the original "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972). As a kid, I watched him in 1959-61 playing Frances Marion, "The Swamp Fox," in six episodes of The Magical World of Disney. That's the same historical character that Mel Gibson's "The Patriot" is based on. Besides Police Squad/Naked Gun, Some of his other late-life comedy roles are "Dracula: Dead and Loving It," "Spy Hard," and the live-action "Mr Magoo." He was a recurring character, a Mountie, in the TV series Due South (1994-99). That series (drama-romance-crime) is played as straight drama but often with comedy undertones, meaning that it's farcical. So he fit right in. And, his real-life father was a Mountie. (I have the entire series on disc.)

In the scene where Frank and his buddy have red lips they were eating pistachios. Up until the mid 80s nearly all the pistachios sold in America came from Iran, and one of the growers there dyed his pistachios red to set them apart, and you (where I lived at least) you could not find non-red pistachios. Then Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran (who was installed in the Iranian government by the CIA was placed under house arrest awaiting trial and the American government rescued him. Things went downhill from there and after that we began to rely on American growers for our pistachio needs and pistachios were never red again. I saw this movie the day it aired in the theater, and I've honestly never heard more laughter in my life. I think I laughed at least once every five minutes myself.

The plot actually isn't bad. It's good enough that it probably could have passed for the plot of a TV series episode or perhaps a TV movie of a similar vintage. It just has a little humor woven in as well, which they did a good job at. Now, there are two more sequels. I hope you check those out as well. Perhaps, you'll get some laughs from those as well.
