Great reaction. Serling with that classic twist at the end that makes Twilight Zone such a great show.

The town square of Willoughby, Ohio still looks today much as it did over a hundred years ago, right down to the statue honoring local Civil War soldiers.

Maybe Willoughby is the guy's idea of an afterlife. A Heaven, if you will. I don't recall what show it was from, but I recall an episode that was about a really bad biker dude who gets killed in an accident. He fully expects to go to Hell for the life he has led. And he wants to go there because he thinks fire and brimstone and tortured souls are cool. Instead he ends up in a room with an older couple watching slides of their vacation trip. Out of sheer boredom he yells out for the Devil, who appears and tells him, "You don't get that because for you that would be Heaven. For you, _this_ is Hell."🤣

I remember what you are talking about. It was an episode of Rod Serling's show from the 1970s, Night Gallery.

You're almost exactly describing the plot of Twilight Zone, season 1, episode 28: A Nice Place to Visit, which starred Larry Blyden and Sebastian Cabot.

I'm sure there are quite a few who would step off into Willoughby. A simpler time, without all the stressors we have today. A chance to begin again. Unfortunately, his only way to leave his problems would become a"final" destination.

My version of "Willoughby" is my home county, but it's the year 2000 in which I'm 16 years old and in high school, my parents are still alive and in their 40s, Bill Clinton is still president, and the places I know and love are still in their prime.

I love the “Irony” that was always in Rod Sterling adaptations in the Stories. Please try, “Mr Dingle The Strong.” From 1959.

I know this guys pain. Six months ago I was demoted after being told that I was best lead person they had. This was done to make room for a younger man. Last week my wife of 44 years told me she no longer is attracted to me. So yeah. Right now Willoughby seems like an option. I can't do that kind of thing, but the pain right now is overwhelming.

There was a time when the 1890s or 1900s were considered the golden age of the USA. There's a bunch of Archie comics where this view is impressed upon young minds by an editor, and even Marvel Comics has a character ( villain ) called 'Turner D. Century', who dresses like then, rides a bicycle built for two ( with a doll of the ideal woman behind him ), and uses an umbrella-shaped raygun to fight the Avengers and others. Most people understand that any golden age dream is just that; an illusion created by distance. The distance to your parent's childhoods, or your own childhood. Rod Serling definitely comes down on the side of 'there is no golden age in the past' with this episode.

Nicely done. I enjoyed your analysis. It gave me some new notions to consider. I agree there are comparisons to, "Walking Distance". Men unhappy in life and are given an opportunity to escape their unhappiness. Gart is able to escape, whilst Martin is forced to return to the world albeit with an enhanced appreciation of those idyllic times. There is a third episode that addresses similar issues, "The Trouble With Templeton". My second all time favorite from this iteration. I've subscribed and look forward to your eventual review of that episode. Have a good evening.

I always thought that this episode had the most unexpected payoff. You could never expect the name of the town to be the name of the funeral home......hits very hard.

She complained about being married to a man who wanted to be Huckleberry Finn. Better to be Huckleberry Finn than to be married to Lady MacBeth.

This was Rod Serling's favorite episode of the season. My personal favorite of the entire series. Some other top tier standouts: The Shelter about civilized people showing their ugly side. The Midnight Sun about the earth shifting its orbit toward the blazing sun. It's a Good Life about a spoiled child with the ability to control reality.

I cannot show the entire episode on KZbin. Their regulations simply ban the video making it unaccessible. The new FULL REACTION format is available for Patreon and KZbin membership. They are hosted in private server
