Wolverine can regenerate memories as well, but it just takes a loonnngggg time. By this time, he has started to remember Origin Wolverine movie's events.
The whole reason Prof. Xavier was able to convince Logan in X1 to join the school was to help Logan get his memories back. X2 shows the progress and an actual aspect of Logan's past come back. It's to be understood that Xavier works with Logan's memories off camera and between movies and they've been at it a long time and Logan has regained a lot of his memories, hence why we got X-Men Origins. The fact he remembers Yashida is the first clue his memories are back because Logan gets shot with the adamantium bullet in the 80s and he remembers this person from WW2. Also Dream Jean says everyone he loves dies, indicating he members his past loved ones. Also Logan wasn't homeless nor American. He's Canadian and grew up in the woods on the run in the 1850s. He moved back to the woods from the mansion to run from his grief and anything that would remind him of Jean.

Half the movie was shot in Japan, the rest in Australia The Prisoner of War camp was shot in New South Wales. After that they moved everyting to Tokyo, Japan and filmed those beautiful shots there. Finally the end reshoots and post credit scenes were done in Montreal, Canada. The "Yukon" opening scenes were actually Picton, New South Wales. Some of the Bear was CGI, but the close ups was a full 12 foot animatronic bear ($$$). Just to say the music in this film is some of the best of the X-men films -- but it does not stand out in front of the action or the actors -- so you just let it move you around without being distracted. All in all this movie was not the success it was supposed to be, as it was "smaller" in scope than the other ensemble films, and you may notice that the other X-men don't really have solo movies or mini team-ups. That tracks with the comic book world pretty much. Spider Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hulk, Wolverine, ... and Deadpool . Those are the big ones. Jessica Jones, tho. You should see that series. At least Season 1. Very worth it.

As a fan of Japanese culture, I am biased when I say I enjoyed The Wolverine. Also, Silver Samurai is an underrated character for Wolverine and the X-Men, One was a villain, the next was more an ally. I'd love a Wolverine or X-Men movie to feature two Silver Samurai, a villain and his son, the father seeks to kill Wolverine, dragging the X-Men into the debacle and by the end the son becomes the new Silver Samurai who befriends the X-Men. Weapon X and Japan are two storylines that flesh out Wolverine's past and I'm more in favor of any and all Japanese Wolverine stories. The Wolverine VS Silver Samurai rivalry could stand the test of time.
