People have their issues with Phase 4, but I personally have enjoyed the wide range of content we've gotten out of it: new characters, new status quos, different types of storytelling, and different genre approaches. But I have to say that "Thor: Love and Thunder" was the first *real* let-down for me. I loved "Thor Ragnarok", so I was excited to see what Taika, Hemsworth and co. would do with a 4th movie, after having "figured out" what works with Thor in the 3rd. I really feel this movie suffered from the notion of "this worked before, so let's do it again, but MORE"; in that the comedy was dialed up to 100. I don't mind a barrage of jokes, as long as they're funny & come naturally. I felt that was the case with "Ragnarok". But with "Love & Thunder", a good portion of the jokes simply didn't land. EVERYONE had to try to have a joke or a bit in, and at some point, it felt like an unintentional parody of the previous movie. There's a lot of cool stuff going on in this movie, but I feel that a lot that would've added resonance or added something to the story, was cut or under-developed in favor of the jokes. I'm looking forward to seeing Thor again, and am interested in his new status-quo, but this movie left a lot to be desired, which is a let--down given that pretty much everyone involved with "Ragnarok" and how successful that was, came back for "Love and Thunder".

I came across a theory about this movie a little while ago that makes it a lot better. The theory is that the whole movie except for the Gorr scene at the beginning and the post credit scene, is told from Korg's perspective, and that he embellished certain parts, which explains all the silly stuff like Stormbreaker being jealous of Mjolnir and Zeus acting really goofy.
@cthulhuwu_2 жыл бұрын
If you've seen Taika Waititi's Hunt for the Wilderpeople this theory lines up. But that said, I don't think he nailed the tone in this one. It really didn't feel natural like his humor in Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit, and Wilderpeople.
@alexanderthegreat56492 жыл бұрын
So here's my thing, can you explain the differences between this movie "silly/goofy" things and Ragnoroks? People loved it but I don't see a difference between the 2 comedy wise. I can absolutely understand criticisms the villain or whatever but barring that it's pretty much Ragnarok to me, if the comedy wasn't funny to you(I don't just mean you personally but in general) than ok not everything hit for me either but it was literally the same for Ragnarok as well they didn't all hit me. The God laughed after his daughter died yes to highlight EXACTLY why they're terrible. Hela murdered left and right and they got to joking immediately as well. I liked the jealousy of SB they've only ever slightly hinted that the hammers have a sort of sentience to them. I'm not 1 of those who think opinions have to align with mine I like hearing different views, but I do wonder why I see similar things between films and others will see them as nowhere near the same and let 1 slide while hating the other. I only refer to level headed and normal people in general because the one's I've seen hate this film before it even released solely because Jane becomes Thor(something accurate to the comics) opinions don't even deserve to be taken seriously.
@quentinhiller88312 жыл бұрын
@@alexanderthegreat5649 I overall loved the movie and thought it was hilarious. I think though that certain things are bit too silly to have actually happened, which is why I like this theory. The basic story actually happened, but the way Zeus acted and Stormbreaker being jealous were just made up by Korg. I just think this is a good way to get people to calm down about hating the movie so much. Also, I feel like Ragnarok's silly things were a bit more realistic than this movie. Again, I have no issues with either movie and love them both.
@quentinhiller88312 жыл бұрын
@@cthulhuwu_ While I do love this movie, I did notice that. Overall, I still thought the movie was very fun, but there was a very different tone. This theory doesn't fix everything, but I do think it could help people who hate the movie.

@@alexanderthegreat5649 much of Ragnarok was improvised. And the overall tone of the movie made it mesh very well. And the villain has less nuance to her. The Gorr story is extremely dark and serious. turning that story into a comedy simply doesn't work. Also, just because a directors humor is accepted in one movie doesn't necessitate automatic acceptance of that's humor in a different movie. His humor only served to stupidify Thor. And he's not a dumb character. For every aspect of the story, the humor did not fit.

Stormbreaker being... semi-sentient was discussed by Taika Waititi during an interview and it does make sense. Gotta remember that the haft of the ax is one of Groot's arms. Groot, being a sentient tree. That same sentient tree that died, and when Rocket planted a twig from his remains - that twig was able to grow and gain sentience again as well. So considering it's a part of the current Groot - who is, in fact, a teenager and acts much like a teenager does... complete with random (sometimes nonsensical) moodiness, jerlousy, ect. And it's not that farfetched an idea considering just a twig from a destroyed and killed on impact Groot managed to come back to life and grow into an entirely new person. This is further supported when you remember at the beginning of the movie when Thor "plants" Stormbreaker in the ground under that tree... Stormbreaker grew roots.

In the original Nordic lore, Thor has those goats. The lead his chariot into battle and around. He can eat them every night (hence the joke about eating then) and they come back to life every morning for him to use again.
@GamerGrovyle Жыл бұрын
One important thing is that they have to be buried with their bones intact. There's one tale I remember where Thor visits a family of mortals asking for a place to sleep for the night and allows them to join him in eating his Goats in return. However the child of the family who ate of one of the legs chose to break it and eat the marrow inside (can't judge him, that shit is delicious) and when the Goat was then resurrected the next day it was lame leaving Thor stranded in Midgard until the Goat healed. He was quite enraged and as compensation took the responsible child as his squire/servant/thrall (there's many versions) Just an interesting factoid about the myth behind the comics.

That opening scene was stellar. And it's greatly considered so by even most haters. The God being goofy and the plants all laughing and etc is exactly the point. It showed just how irrelevant humans are to them. He literally just lost his people, his daughter, and his God is having a fun time frolic with nymphs. As a father, if you just lost your daughter and you get a proud god like Loki who mocks you or something you might get angry, you might get furious. But you get a god who is the Joker, is throwing a party and take turns laughing at you like you're not even a person, and you turn insane. It's more than just anger, anger is justified, but the god didn't even not care about what happened to you. He didn't even know you existed. I'm with Oak. They had a great opportunity to give this film some very serious tones weaved into the comedy, but instead, they just went straight comedy. Hard to think this is from the same director of Jojo Rabbit where the comedy was masterfully balanced with the very serious topic. And to top it off, they just spent the first half of the film making Thor a big, dumb, destructive idiot. And then all of a sudden, at the end, he goes a little philosophical on Gor. (And Thor's been proven to be very intelligent, so the 'big dumb idiot' thing is extremely irritating.) Christian Bale was the highlight of this film. I'm not sure what's going on with Marvel, but Ms. Marvel wasn't their best, Dr. Strange: MoM wasn't their best, She-Hulk hasn't been the best, and now Thor. This has been their weakest phase so far, which is really disappointing after End Game.

There are several notes and reports saying that the edition in this phase has been made for Marvel movies with no sense at all coming with notes from the CEO's office; not knowing even how to edit, downgrading FX quality and demanding more from their teams for the same payment. Taika have almost 10 hours of filming to be ready for the final revision that was left behind and in the end all had to be discard (Same for Doctor Strange), 30 minutes cut off of the regular Marvel duration for movies; and Chapeck, with a record of horrible results while managing all Disney parks, was given this kind of power to mess everything, and he did it "beautifully" (hence why he was fired).

I notice when the Oak likes a movie he usually gives a really thoughtful commentary at the end but when he doesn’t he can get a little reductive. Other people have mentioned that the first scene was supposed to make you angry at the gods total indifference so I won’t get into that. Sorry you didn’t like it man and I hope you like the next one better.

I felt it was rushed. And it felt like a long snl bit. It was too much comedy to the point when I couldnt manage to shed a tear when Jane passed and usually I would be sobbing. I wish we could have seen Jane transform for the first time and I wish we could have seen Gorr take out more Gods. I wish we could have feared him.

I cannot comprehend how people enjoyed this movie. I really can't. Thor Ragnarök was the last decent movie the director made. Half of it was really well done, the other half was shitty cringe jokes etc. Thor love and thunder was like the director decided to take everything shit about Ragnarök and put it into a movie. The best scene in the entire movie was Melissa McCarthy as Hel.

I actually liked it more then I would have thought and more then "Thor Ragnarok". I was glad to see Jane and Darcy again and also Lady Siv and didn't miss Loki to much. One reason that I couldn't realy enjoy it are the shadow-realm-scenes. Even seeing them here at a smaler scale it hurts me looking at them (which is a shame because they are the best parts of the movie.). I don't know why. I have seen movies like "Sin City 2" and "The Spirit" without getting head achke and I like actull black and white movies of all time but these scenes are something different.

I think this movie knew exactly what it was, and where it wanted to go. I think it went the directions it went in for a reason, and I don't see anything wrong with it. I truly enjoyed the fact that Gorr ISN'T a clear-cut villain. Life, after all, isn't clear-cut. The 'comedy' of the flower gods scene wasn't actually comedy, and I'm surprised y'all didn't see that. It's intentional. The tragedy of the mortal condition, swept aside for some immortal capriciousness. It was intentional, and it worked. I'm excited to see where Taika goes in the future with it. For me, in complete honesty, I'd give it a 4.6/5. But hey, that's me, and doesn't invalidate anyone else's opinion! =D

I like this movie. It has great highs but it also has its lows. But it’s a hard disagree with the opening scene. Gorr lost everything and at the end of it he finds his god and it shows that this god does not care about anything except himself. So why would that god fit in with Gorr’s seriousness when his very first line establishes that everything that doesn’t relate to him is meaningless to him? I think the scene did a great job in showing how callous gods can be imo
@andareon2 жыл бұрын
For me, It was clearly a Taika movie. you get super goofy stuff and mega serious stuff at each extreme, from one scene to the other. Bit like Jojo Rabbit. I didn't love that movie like It's the best Marvel I have seen, but It was good fun, with real good humor AND real good serious tone story parts. The weird thing is that the humor works and the drama stuff works, It just feels not matching at times. I'll still keep watching Chris Hemsworth do Thor and Taïka doing whatever movie. I think The Oak is tough on this movie, but hey, to each their own. Thanks guys for a great reaction, as always!

They didn’t want you to laugh in the beginning, btw, they wanted you to sympathize with Gorr and dislike the God that he served. As someone who enjoyed reading about Gorr in the comics, this film did a great disservice to him. I think the tone would’ve been better suited had they chosen another villain with a less heavy backstory who people wouldn’t have minded being a one-off character. Similar to what Hela was for Ragnarok. Not to mention that they chose Bale to portray him to then be wasted. Gorr should’ve been reoccurring like how Thanos was and Kang will be. Gorr should’ve been a focal villain for another 3-Phase Saga. As for Jane… Natalie Portman was never interested in committing to the ten-year contract after what she went through with Star Wars, which was why she never appeared in anything after the last movie she was in, so this was a way to tie up loose ends and give her character a proper farewell.

I thought that the beginning scene with his god in the oasis showed how entitled the god was in that the god thought it was his followers job to die for him and not to feel like the god had to do anything for his followers. The god thought it was funny his followers thought they were entitled to paradise when they died from their god and the callousness of the god to laugh at the death of his daughter - a mortal.

Fantastic video again. I had a lot of problems with the film when I saw it. I thought it’s plot was really messy and had way too many jokes and I honestly thought the film was kinda boring and even when it wasn’t insanely long, it kinda felt like it was and felt like it was being drawn out really long and I didn’t really care all that much for the characters and thought the pacing was really inconsistent. It’s honestly a film I like less the more I think about it. But I still think it’s somewhat enjoyable and I still loved the performances and I really like Gorr. I thought he was one of the more sympathetic MCU villains.

in the comics they explain that turning into thor actually flushes her system of the chemo treatment she was reciving thus reverting her back to a normal cancer patient without any drugs/chemo, it's actually a very tragic story and while it wasnt too well recieved in the comics, i thought that was an awesome caveat to her using the hammer, like she would do it if people needed her to but it was killing her to do so

Great honest reactions all of you! I would highly recommend the movie Jo Jo Rabbit, directed by the same Taiki Waititi who also plays Hitler in the movie, I think you'll see a similar vibe/style of story-telling, but much more successful in its delivery. The biggest difference is the real-life historical backdrop of WWII Nazis and the Jews whereas Marvel is fantasy/SciFi where there are no boundaries hence the extremes in comedy vs tragedy. My thoughts anyway. Thanks guys!

The first half of the movie took a bit to get on track, but the last half I thought was good. Maybe a bit corny at times but Ragnarok showed that was what Thor was about now. Gotta be honest i really dont like this movie. Having a comedy movie with Gorr the god butcher just doesnt really work. They could have utilized him better, and the jokes really went overboard. Thor ragnarok worked because it balanced the humor better. For instance odins death wasnt ruined by a random joke in between where as in this movie his death is played for jokes. Also the scene where thor jokes about sifs arm being gone while shes dying is again just overused comedy. I will say the post credit scene is badass and the jane and thor scenes are good, like her death and the breakup scene but overall this movie could have been so much more

For me it was kinda over when Star-Lord spoke about his loved ones (his team) and Thor started to move in his viewline…. This was so damn silly and out of Thors normal character… but I think it was foreseeable by the end of Endgame when Thor didn’t took Quill serious as leader of the Guardians 🤨

I seriously think the lack of balance in this movie was because this is the first Thor movie without Loki. Loki was such a driving force in the other movies that without him the writers didn't have any idea where to go with the story.

I am seeing more that the studio wanted this under 2 hours... I wonder how/if that affected some of the final cut?
@JDdiGriz2 жыл бұрын
@@BaddMedicine I wonder that myself, but all in all I think this movie was hurt the most by the absense of Loki. Say what you willabout the character but he did lend a substantial prsence to all the other Thor movies. A superhero movie is only as good as the villain, and did this movie even have a villain? I mean Gorr was creepy and sinister, but he wasn't really wrong. At no point did I ever hate Gorr for what he was doing, I understood why he was doing everything he did. This movie needed Loki to complicate everything and make things worse.

Another thing i would like to add is that there have been other marvel movies that use alot of comedy and work really well. For example guardians 1 has a lot of actual funny jokes and scenes but it balances it in a way with emotional and darker scenes that works perfectly. For example when groot sacrifices himself to save the rest of the guardians, there isnt some weird joke afterwards, and the movie develops each of the characters naturally.
