Being an ex heroin addict myself, the scene where you said "he must be hallucinating", when Rentons parents lock him up so he can go cold Turkey, well I think that scene is done extremely well. It describes exactly how you feel when your coming off that shite. The emotions and failures that you've been running from by numbing yourself with heroin most your life, they all come rushing back. So everything that Renton didn't face in life, well it's all coming rushing back ten fold, it's a horrible thing to go through. Plus the pain and the sickness is awful, it's like having the flu and covid x10, plus the lack of sleep for days on end. So yeh don't do drugs people. Trainspotting is not exaggerated at all, it's so close to life. I haven't had a habit for 13 year's now. Great film and a great reaction king boomer, thank-you 💙🙏🏻👍

Braveheart - A film based on real historical characters & real events that is almost entirely fictional Trainspotting - A film based on fictional characters that is almost entirely true to life* * Well, true to life in Edinburgh's drug scene in the 1980's/90's anyway.

I'm only 1 min into watching this reaction, but you should definitely consider watching an excellent bloody, urban thriller called *Shallow Grave*. It is set in Glasgow, is directed by Trainspotting and 28 Days Later director and stars Ewan McGregor (among others). Three co-habiting friends come into possession of a huge sum of cash and decide to keep it - with dire consequences.

I loved T2. There are a lot of detractors but really any classic movie that gets a sequel after a couple of decades or more will always have detractors, there are people who hate Bladerunner 2049 despite the fact Denis Villeneuve perfectly recreated the world of the first movie. Trainspotting is one of those movies where you wonder "What happened to them?" and T2 shows you what happened to them. I hope KB reacts to it at some point.

@@ChorltonOutlaw that’s not me saying the original is bad, the original is incredible. I just mean T2 had to follow the original so there was huge expectations to be met and there were people who didn’t want a sequel so they had to be won over too. To me they did an amazing job to keep the tone of the 1st film and they built on it. They’re both masterpieces in my opinion, I just prefer the 2nd one because it’s more relatable to me - growing older, living with regrets and the decisions you’ve made, working out what to do in life - as Begbie put it ‘the world changes, even if we don’t’ it just really hit closer to home for me.

I always find trainspotting bittersweet. I loved the film when it came out, and still love it. It's so well made, and resonates so much as someone growing up in Scotland in the 90's. But then, just 2 years after the film was released, my cousin died of a heroin overdose. She was my best friend in the world. And watching the film always brings everything back, the struggles to get her clean, the relapses, all happening when Trainspotting was the big thing. And then, ultimately, her death. Until we meet again.

Trainspotting is one of my favourite movies. The acting, script, soundtrack, cinematography, etc were all perfect. I thought Robert Carlyle was electrifying as Begbie - how such a little guy can be so terrifyingly threatening. T2 is definitely worth a watch. A different tone to the original but still an excellent film looking at the characters 20 years later.

I loved your reaction to Spud's laundry scene. It had me cracking up at that for the first time in years. I read the book when I lived in Leith, where it's set, and it was crazy sitting on a bus reading about this stuff, and looking up I could see the places where they happened (fictionally). You said you love the shot with them crossing the road, but did you realise it's a homage to Abbey Road? When they get off the train next to the mountain, one of them is facing the wrong way, like Paul on the back of Sgt Pepper's. There might be more of them, but I don't know. Danny Boyle also made Yesterday, about a world where The Beatles are suddenly wiped out of existence and only 1 musician remembers them. That's OK, but if you want to check out more of his work, I'd recommend Shallow Grave, with an even younger Ewan McGregor, Christopher Eccleston, who later played Dr Who, and Lilly Allan's dad, Keith, who was haggling the price with Begbie in this.

Literally was East of Scotland in 1996. I worked in Edinburgh in the first half of my twenties in the 90's and there was a dozen pubs down Leith Walk where there was a Spud and Begbie propping up the bar in every pub. Show no weakness and you'd have a great night out in the town. The alternative wasn't an option.

At 11:25 - yeah, Keving McKidd is awesome. He's great in HBO's 'Rome', and one of my favourite horror/comedies of all time (tied with 'Tremors'), 'Dog Soldiers'. It's a werewolf movie about a British Army team doing a training exercise in the highlands of Scotland (which obviously goes horribly wrong). It's got some absolutely hilarious dialogue and it's well worth tracking down.

At the time Robert Carlyle was in a TV show as a highland policeman called Hamish Macbeth. Seeing him as Begbe was shocking! What a character!!!

I was serving in Bosnia with the British Army when this film was released. One of the lads brought the video back with him after being on leave, we had our own TV room so he put it on, it then played continuously for two and a half days, as different people were always coming and going, and was only stopped because The Simpsons was on on Sunday Evenings lol 🤣🤣

BTW T2 trainspotting is a brilliant beautiful love letter to those of us that went through it, got clean only to get a whole new set of problems be set us. It’s stunning. During the filming of this Begbie (Robert Carlyle) was also playing a lovable Scottish highlands village police officer whose main companion in his work was his dog, called Wee Jock. Having been to Scotland a few times, I have never experienced someone as psychotically violent as Begbie, but I was surprised when my totally ordinary black shoulder bag caused such a stir that drunk men insisted on taking selfies while wearing it. "He's got a f#cking manbag! I've seen everything now! A f#cking manbag!" etc.

T2 is very good. It's not a patch on the original but it's a good film. It takes place 20 years after the original film and it's worth a watch. It gives you a lot more background on the characters from the first film especially Spud & Begbie

The thing with Trainspotting 2, is that, despite it being nothing like the book (and the book is one of my faves) its more a sequel to the film, and more a nostalgia thing.... I don't think it would really appeal to people who didn' grow up with Trainspotting being one of their fave films, the bits of the film that take you back to the first film take you back to what you were doing when you first saw the film also.....without that you're just not going to get the same vibe from it..... plus the ending of the book was the weak part, the ending of the film is even worse....and just too much a rehash....

The pub that berbie threw the glass over the balcony ,was a church hall in Glasgow up until the 70s,I went there as a wee boy in the 60s and have been back since it was converted to the pub .Like laughing along to you laughing at British stuff I haven’t watched and laughed again for a while,the dog is a nice touch :D

I've never taken heroin, but I've experienced severe withdrawal after a massive morphine overdose, and what's portrayed in the film is very accurate. I remember hallucinations, confusion, chronic fatigue, fever and nausea. Also, I didn't even have the strength to stand on my own for 2 days after I woke up. It's a really awful thing to go through, so I really feel for addicts, that have most likely got to go through it multiple times in their lives.

A brilliant 90s classic. Danny Boyle's films are always so innovative you gotta checkout Shallow Grave, The Beach, Slumdog Millionaire among others. Some very funny and utterly tragic scenes in this too. This film really put McGregor on the map, even though he also starred in Shallow Grave too, again set in Edinburgh.

The sequel, T2, is definitely worth the watch. It was filmed with the same actors, 20 years after this one; and the characters are 20 years older too. So, it really feels like... what happens to these guys in 20 years time. And, IMO, it is brilliantly done. I highly recommend it.

King B. The crazy guy is played by Robert Carlyle. He is one of the best actors in the UK. He has also played a Bond villain. Also he is a man of many accents. This was well worth a watch. PS I forgot to say that Ewan Bremner who played spud also played Dominic in Harry Enfield's the dad of the gay son.

Fellow trainspotters, a better follow up to this is a 4 part TV Drama called Looking After Jo Jo, which also stars Robert Carlyle and Kevin McKidd (amongst others) its also set in Edinburgh in the 80s, and is about the heroin epidemic, but while Trainspotting can be accused of glamorising the lifestyle, Looking After Jo Jo really delved into the matter of how the situation affecetd lives and families and tore communities apart, and exposes the people the dealers were. Its a great drama with a brilliant soundtrack, amazing acting and some real grit!

Great reaction bud,, especially at Spud's sheets.😂 Although it's meant to be Edinburgh the school scene was filmed in Glasgow and the nightclub as well. Many times did me & the lads would leave the pub and walk the short distance to the Volcano in the Patrick area of Glasgow. Got me aw nostalgic😁 The guy playing Mikey Forester who sold Renton the suppositories was the guy who wrote the book, Irvine Welsh.

1. I had to use a toilet in Amsterdam which was worse than that toilet. It was incredibly grim! 😬 2. I was 13 years old when this was released. If watching this movie doesn't stop you even thinking about trying Heroin, then nothing will. (the scene when he's locked up in his room and going through withdrawals is beyond harrowing) 3. This movie does have a great soundtrack.

The book has some additional stuff in there which flesh out the characters a bit more. The bulk of it is written in phonetic Scottish (Renton is the narrator) and takes a while to get used to reading

I met Irvine Welsh in an Edinburgh pub a few weeks ago. I asked him if he'd been at the Hibs game earlier that day - he responded "shite", then we talked about how badly Hibs had played. Dude im from glasgow, born and raised, me n my friends watched this movie a lot when we were like 11 years old. Honestly the best anti drugs education thing for us, im still literally ptsd when it comes to the thought of taking anything like heroin/coke/mdma etc.

Scotland had a major heroin usage problem throughout the 80's and 90's. This film perfectly encapsulates the social problems of Scotland during that time

King Boomer, this really is one of the greatest indie movies of all time! It's of our answer to Pulp Fiction here in the UK. The soundtrack is the best compilation of the 90s, I think...It introduced a lot of us to Iggy Pop, Lou Reed and Underworld, etc. Robert Carlyle is brilliant as Begbie; I admit I only understand like 30% of what he's saying though. His pub story about "playing pool like Paul fookin Newman" is top shelf. Knowing him would be a nightmare but man he's funny.
