This movie was HILARIOUS! OMG, inspired genius! Best part of the movie (for me)? Not knowing that was Tom Cruise under all that make-up and prosthetics until the end when they showed the credits! It seems he's always at his best when he's portraying villains, anti-heroes or just all-around asshole characters. Robert Downey Jr. was hilarious as well in this comedic gem.

You can tell from the movie he was lookin' crazy studying black people for the role and also maybe some people with paranoid schizophrenia or wartime PTSD. I have never watched this movie but have watched numberless reactors reacting to this movie. I believe that this movie, though a comedy, is trying to tell the story of the production of "Apocalypse Now." That film is acclaimed today, but it was castigated back in 1979. Contrary to what Roger Ebert wrote long after, he disliked it initially.

It seems to parody lots of war movies. When Ben Stiller is getting shot in the beginning it's clearly an homage to Platoon. That said, Apocalypse Now is one of the greatest movies ever made.

They're taking a piss at Hollywood in general - the prima donna method actors and the ridiculous lengths some of them go for their "art" (they're probably taking a jab at guys like Daniel Day Lewis, Jared Leto, etc.), the sniveling yes men that orbit studio execs (Bill Hader's character), the has-been actors that struggle for relevance and become a parody of themselves (action stars that are past their prime, even comedians like Eddy Murphy), the bloated and messy film production itself, the director that are beholden to both the studio executives and babysitting all the clashing egos of his cast, the "authenticity" of not just war movies but the whole pretentiousness of Hollywood trying to tackle serious subjects (those "critically-acclaimed movies" and the self-congratulatory nature of award ceremonies like the Oscars where Hollywood pats itself in the back), even actors hiding in the closet to protect their careers

this movie was hilarious when it came out. rdj got an academy nominee and this helped saved tom cruise's career (he was semi canceled from jumping on oprah's couch and some scientology stuff at the time). ben stiller's best comedy.

Your reaction was great, had me laughing as much as the actual film! Nice Nolte quote as well. This might be one of only two "meta"-blackface movies / shows I've seen - where it's *about* someone who does blackface, not the blackface itself. Also, Tom Cruise's character could be read as a before-its-time portrayal of the general lawlessness of Harvey Weinstein... just brilliant all the way around.

Actually I have had Booty Sweat as well as a Bust a Nut bar. 😂 My son went and saw this and he came home with three of each. I didn’t understand the connection until I watched it myself and saw the fake commercials. It was actually sold at concession stands for a few days, until everything ran out. Not exactly a vintage wine, but it wasn’t bad.

This is one of the funniest movies ever. I ly one of my friends when we watched the 1st time to realize it was Tom Cruise right away. His voice is too distinctive. I knew it was Tom Cruise, I actually am always distracted by Bill Hader, I always wonder how Tom Cruise - who has been known to be dicky on film sets to underlings and people in smaller parts - treated Hader, who was not as well-known as he is now. I actually look at this role as the most Tom Cruise-part there is: you take away the bland good looks and what's left? An ugly personality!🤣 (sorry, Tom! Liked you in "Taps" and "Risky Business", though!)🤣/What do I think of "Tropic Thunder" you ask? I think it's funny! I think one thing about Robert Downey's performance gets missed: he's not just an white actor playing a black guy. The joke is also that he's an AUSTRALIAN. Australians are always playing Americans and Brits.......they play anything but Australians! Mel Gibson, Russel Crowe, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, Potria De Rossi, etc etc. 9 times out of ten they're doing an accent. So having him play a black American solider is just the most extreme example of how far away from themselves an Australian actor could be cast as. (Obviously, also punking on someone like Daniel Day Lewis who plays all these gruff macho characters....and then shows up at the award ceremonies completely the opposite).
