Nice review JB! GM needs to get the 10 speed trans in the gasser and make optional gearing available. I have a 2020 L5P / 10A. The trans has been phenomenal. Something missed in your review you may not be aware of. When coupling to a trailer, when you select the “zoom hitch view” the e brake will set automatically when the trans is shifted to park so the truck doesn’t roll out of position. It will then automatically release when shifted into gear and throttle is applied. You can see the feature in this video... kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHSbhquNgM-Kjqc

Great review, I think for most people, unless you are towing heavy in the mountains everyday, a gasser is sufficient and a lot less maintenance than the diesel. No argument that a diesel is better for economy or torque, just feel most people don't need it that often to justify the higher expense.

I pull trailers daily. I wouldn't run more than 70 pulling a trailer of any weight. I typically run 65 and stay in the slow lane. You can have a million horsepower put it doesn't stop any better than 100 horsepower.

I have the 2022 2500 HD Custom with 6.6L gas, and a we have a 2020 truck with the 6.6L diesel. It's a company truck and it's hauling 20-24ft trailers. The gas is doing 6mpg, the diesel is doing 12mpg pulling. Bought the gas because it was $20k less than the diesel model, and it's a back up to our diesel trucks. Because when a diesel breaks, IT BREAKS!

An 8-speed really would be a great option, but also, they’ve been using that 6-speed for years and it’s very reliable. I can live with sacrificing a little performance for proven reliability. I can’t wait to buy mine in a few months. Hoping that they will have some good year end discounts. God bless you and great review 👍 Already thinking about an engine tune and the add-a-leaf spring on the rear suspension. You won’t be disappointed. I finally got mine in last week. Unfortunately I had to compromise so luxury options I would’ve preferred because GM has put restrictions on packages. I went with the 2500 HD AT4 6.6 gasser. Couldn’t be more happy. According to the manager that has always been honest with me in past dealings there will likely not be many rebates or deals for at least 6-8 months, and restrictions will probably go on for at least that long. You might want to put an order in for one if you want something specific, but even with orders you won’t get it like you want until the restrictions are lifted you’ll just be ahead of the rest of the pack to get yours. Another option is to do like I plan. Get a truck now, and take advantage of the great trade-in offers later when more options become available. The used car market will be in high demand much longer than the chip shortage. Best of luck, and God bless you.

The truck drives very comfortable especially over Dodge and Ford. Something missed in review was turning radius, GMC doesn’t require a football field to turn around. I daily drive mine because of this. As far as the infotainment system it just works. I’m not sure on this trim level when you change lanes the screen will show the camera view of that lane. Great review, thank you.

Excellent review! I just picked one up in the AT4 trim this past week. Love it so far. PSA for anyone interested GM as well as other manufacturers have recently placed restrictions on certain packages, and options due to chip shortages etc… So if you want one with censors, and other luxury options you’ll have to wait possibly a year according to the many GM managers I spoke with. I have a 2020 with the 6.6 gas , and I have owned a 2018 Duramax , and I cant tell no difference. the 6.6 gas , is fine for pulling, think of it this way, in the 70's 80's and 90's we pulled the same weight with old 454 boat anchor engines. I will not waste my money for the diesel again. plus my Dooley empty gets 16.8 mpg with me driving 68 mph. my Duramax would only get 18 MPG. AND IT SUXED 9-12 PULLING A TRAILER. The 6.6 gas will 9-12 with a trailer as well. but it is 10k cheaper.

@gregory debroka I'd say go for it, dude! I've got a 2021 2500 Custom 6.6L gasser. I got it in November. It's an absolute joy! 6.1k miles already. It's got a 36 gallon fuel tank. My drives to work are about 45 miles there and back home every day. So I spend about 60-70 bucks on fuel every week. It only gets 1 MPG less than my 2007 5.3L half ton. I got 16 in the half ton, and i'm getting 15 in this 6.6L gasser. It's got no AFM cylinder deactivation crap on it, and no fancy 8,9,10 spd transmission. It's got the same old tried and true 6L90E which has always been extremely reliable. It shifts great. Even though it's a 3/4 ton, it still rides WAY more comfortably than my 2007 half ton. I love my Ram, but with only 1044 lbs payload my 6800 lb 33’11” trailer is overloading it by a bit. Still feels good, and I don’t get the squat that a lot of Ram owners get (sits level with only 1.3” drop in back - axle weight in front is within 60-70lbs as unloaded with WDH). This 6.6 litre on the 2500 looks tempting though!

I wish GM would put the 10spd in to fill in some of the gaps on WOT. The engine would not have to be wound out as much with a few more gears. I noticed a tremendous difference in that with the Ram 6.4 w/ ZF and 3.73s. Totally different truck. That said, I still don't believe the GMs deserve as much flack as the get, powertrain wise. Sure the Ford 7.3 is the current gasser champ, and the Ram 6.4 is a true workhorse now, but the new 6.6 was designed for heavy work.

GM really needs to use a newer 10 speed with this engine to keep it relative with the competition. The L8T should have a lot of potential. It's basically just a GEN5 LT based 6.2L with a little longer stroke, lower compression, iron block, no AFM/DFM crap, and no engine start/stop crap either. Even if the Allison 10 speed costs more than GM wants to spend for this engine the automatic Camaro ZL1 uses the 10L90 which is a beefed up version of the 10L80 used in the other 10 speed GM 1/2 ton trucks, SUV's and cars. The 80 and 90 #'s are torque ratings that the trans is rated to support. The 10L90 is a very good and strong transmission that might be up to the task of handling what this truck is rated to do.

I'm divided on the 6-speed versus 10-speed. The 6-speed is proven but this gasser with a 10-speed would be quicker and likely a better performer all around. Maybe GM could keep the 6-speed as standard equipment but offer the 10-speed used on the Duramax as an option? That 10-speed seems well sorted and would certainly be strong enough.

6 Spd. Transmission facts below. First, very good review 👍. I own a 2020 6.6L gas as well in an LT Z71 package and in a Double Cab config. (big enough for me). Let’s jump right to the transmission; I could agree that a higher spd. tranny could translate into 1-2 mpg better overall. However feel confident that this specific 6L90 6spd. is virtually the same as the one in the ZL1 Camaro and Cadillac CTS-V. But they made this one more robust for the truck by beefing up the clutch pack and marrying the robust torque carrying components from their existing diesel torque converter to make for a stronger transmission and for the increased power the 6.6L produces. Here in Alberta (prairie and Rocky Mtn country with winters and industries like Gas & Oil), I experienced similar fuel mileage pulling my 31 ft. Toy Hauler in summer 2020. The engine produces 20% more torque all across the rpm range compared to the old 6.0L, all with 87 octane (sweet!). Industry 1st for an HD to have Direct Fuel Injection. There is more to be said, but... in summary, I really like my truck and it’s capability of payload (+3300) and towing and slightly longer box and longer Double Cab than the 2015-2019 version. I also appreciate the AutoTrac AWD transfer case for winter ❄️ driving. 👍🏆

I found it odd that they called it an Allison transmission since it isn't actually manufactured by Allison, it's only tested by them. To get the Allison manufactured automatic, you need to step up to the 4500+ trucks.
@seanvandergriff71613 жыл бұрын
Did anyone else notice the shifts when he was doing the hard acceleration? It almost seemed like the clutches were slipping. The transmission would shift, set the low rpm, climb rpm just for a split second then you can hear the engine lower rpm for about that same amount of time, then it would raise rpm again and go through the gear.

@@JB_WhoWork If that's a fact then the idiots at GM need to realize what the competition is offering. Ford with a 7.3 and 10 spd is a potent combo. The 6.4 Ram with an 8 spd isn't bad either. To offer a new engine then handicap it with 3.73 gears and a 6spd so that it hardly outperforms the outgoing 6.0 is purely moronic.

The trucks are two totally different trucks. I wish dealerships would let me test drive both with a trailer lol. I'd be grateful for your honest input, and you can be biased if you want to
@JB_WhoWork2 жыл бұрын
Honestly go with the one you feel right at home with, I would hate to have both trucks in front of me to purchase because they both have strengths and weaknesses. Love the 8 speed in the RAM and the fact you can get a 4.10 rear however the MDS is a reliability issue… The GM 6.6L doesn’t have cylinder deactivation and I believe it’s a pushrod design and the fact that the 6 speed will most likely be reliable, this would push me to go for the GM. I do wish it had 2 more gears, this would be the clear winner 👍🏾
@MatthewSmith-le3xd2 жыл бұрын
@@JB_WhoWork a lot of my clients have 6.4 hemis. But they're the older 6 speeds. Somewhere between 90-120k miles they all need cam and lifters. Every single one, and that's about 12 trucks total between the 2 companies I service. I have driven the 2019+ with the 8 speed, and love that trans. The MDS scares me tho out of warranty, but the coils rode really good in the rear, not sure how they'll do with a load tho. I'm also a fan of straight axle over IFS. I've mostly owned GM trucks...not because they're my preference, but because I can usually get good deals on them, and parts are abundant and cheap. I've had plenty of 6.0s with the dame 6l90, and to me it's just a "meh" trans. They're usually good for 150k miles, but they're the weak point in GM trucks, and not nearly as stout and reliable as everyone makes them out to be. But they've been around and every shop and build one fairly cheap with a quick turnaround time compared to other trucks. I'm willing to spend $2,500-$3k every 5 years or so for a trans. I also find the ram seats to be more comfortable, but the GM trucks just sit right to me with the way the steering wheel sits and all. It's a hard choice. I've heard some ppl say the ram pulls harder and some ppl day the 6.6 pulls better than the 6.4s with the 8 speed.
