Thx man. Yes this isn’t my first rodeo. Will try turning flywheel first oil in cylinders. Would run oil pump if trying to start. Not going to ruin it trying to make YT gold. Will pull and rebuild rather than trash it.

Awesome find! Pretty much my dream car there. I have owned 6 convertible Challengers through the years (plus 3 convertible e-body barracudas) starting with my first one back in 1985. One day I hope I find at least one more and will keep it. Problem is they have gotten so darn expensive LOL

I've seen the actual pace car for the 1971 Indy 500 the owner has all the documents from Palmer Dodge after the repairs were made.

In 1984, I bought one exactly like that. Red with white top. From what I have read, you could not get a high performance challenger rag top in 1971. Mine was a 318 automatic.

In 1983, my mom loaned me the money for '71 Hemi orange, white convertible top, rallye wheel, 340 Challenger convertible. I believe 100% mine is one of the pace car replicas. I still have the car and she needs TLC, but I will never part with her.

By the way, after watching your excellent video, I had to add that I researched the pace car accident years ago, and discovered that Eldon Palmer, missed his breaking mark and was going way too fast when he entered pit road. Driver error caused the crash. Good luck with the Challenger. Incredible machines!

get a 340 small block fo rit, don't bore the 318 out they can't handle it. Don't put a 440 in it, thats ugly and generic.

@joshuawood1436 With most cars, I'd agree. Limited production Mopar muscle cars, however, are a completely different animal. An alll original numbers matching one of less than 25 cars is gonna be worth stupid money. They only made the Challenger convertible for 2 years and they didn't make many, so it's already limited production. There were only 50 indy pace cars made, and there's a story behind how a couple dealers got together and built them because the big 3 refused to build special cars because of emissions regulations, Mopar nuts will pay big money just to tell that story. A certain number of pace cars had a bigger engine, which means less than 50 had the 318. Let's guess and say 30, which makes this car one of 30. If half were 4 speeds and half were automatics, that makes it one of 15. If half had A/C, it's one of 7 or 8. If it was the only 1 of those 7 with some other option and you can prove it, there is a Mopar collector out there that will absolutely pay more than enough money for that particular car for you to go buy 3 cars thay aren't limited production models and build the absolute hell out of them. No joke, if you were to properly restore this particular car as an all original survivor with minimal repairs and paint correction and prove it's one of not many, it's very likely to go for 6 figures at auction.
