just thought i’d say, before i found your channel, i refused to open up about my diabetes, i would hide my libre and go to the bathroom to do shots. today marks my 3rd diaversary and i am so much more open about it and it’s because of your channel, you showed that there was nothing to be ashamed of and that if people judge me, to be honest i don’t want to be friends with them or i can use the opportunity to educate them thank you michelle xx

Jessica, I am a type 1 for 54 years and have learned much. One of the most important is to include co-workers in your care and MAKE IT FUN FOR THEM! Before all the sophisticated glucose monitors I used to go low often. The departments I supervised contained about about 17 people. A) Have a meeting B) Tell them your plan C) Ask for their help D) Make it fun. Here is what I did: I would get so involved with work I would miss blood sugar tests so I implemented the Blood Sugar Lottery. Mid morning, before lunch, afternoon break & before going home my employees (ones that wished to participate) would contribute a dime, observe my behavior and write my guessed blood sugar on a scrap of paper with their initials. Person closest to actual Bg value after test would win the kitty. This made me test regularly and made it fun for the team. My departments became more cohesive. Together there was nothing we could not achieve.

Congratulations on your 1st week Michelle!! It definitely gets a lot stressful sometimes when u work whole and then work on your diabetes rest of the day. Also a tip, if you travel by TTC, make sure you don't go low in the TTC especially if it's crowded. I was in the TTC line 1 once and I had a low but the train was so packed, I couldn't even take out the Dec tabs from my bag.
@MichelleLord

Oh my goodness I've already had some lows on the TTC and it is the WORST :( . I also couldn't grab anything from my bag, but luckily I was getting off the train soon.

My bad day(s) are immediately after the Dexcom sensor change, pattern is showing alarming lows when they are not. After 3 calibrations the sensor is usually within 7 points of finger stick. Your nigh time lows can be combated with peanut butter (non sugar). Peanut butter breaks down very slowly (6hrs+) helping to SLOWLY release steady carbs to keep you out of the low sugar ditch. Forget the granola bar as they are way too high in carbs. Use glucose tabs which are 4 gr/tab. Your low will dictate # of tabs to eat. Michelle, it looks like you are not aware of what your "correction factor" & "Insulin sensitivity" is. These are simple tests you can perform which help you get dialed in. They should be performed when you are outside your "IOB" window, usually that is about 4 hrs. I think it is great your hubby is linked to your monitor. Having more people involved always helps.

Hello love your KZbin channel. The best thing to do is pack your lunch this way you know your eating healthy. And pack snack Incase you need something ASAP. The first thing I did when I moved into my new office was to buy a mini fridge so I would have my supplies handy. My wife is the best she always packs goodies so I can snack heathy as needed. 😂 best of luck in your new job.

Hey Michelle, just bumped into ur channel for the 1st time... you've mentioned that you have sometimes many lows during the night, therefore gotta ask: what kind of basal insulin do you use? I use Tresiba (insulin Degludec) and it seems to help avoid those lows. Cheers from Cologne, Germany ;)

Im a type 1 x 48 yrs....Over those yrs I have gone from peeing on test tapes in the 1970s to getting a cgm about 6 month ago......Test tapes were yellow paper strips that you peed on and the darker the green color was , that meant your blood sugar was high....I love my cgm as I no longer have to guess what my bg is at... For me I dont stress too much as long as my blood sugar is 95-130 range. That is not what the diabetic educators will tell you but it works for me.. Any lower my eyesight gets poor... I can not wear an insulin pump because I work as an MRI tech and dont want to risk a malfunction.. I do however wear my dexcom g6 within the magnetic field but not into the bore... I can feel the battery on my transmitter being tugged on as I get near the magnet...I was worried that when I got the g6 that I wouldnt be able to wear it at work, but I found the magnet has no effect on the sensor and still transmits correct readings...If you are a patient for an mri, do not wear a glucose monitor or insulin pump if you are going to be getting an MRI.. The center of the bore is much stronger than standing outside of the bore...Some suggestions for better health is try taking Tumeric. It is one of the best anti inflammatories there is. Drink lots of water and also try to get a good sweat going when you work out as it will make you feel better. When you get labs done make sure your thyroid is still working..I got extremely fatigued when my thyroid went out 20 yrs ago....Make sure you get eyes checked at least once a yr...Macular edema as well as retinopathy can be treated with lazer as well as intraocular shots... I have been treated for both of these issues...You can live a relatively normal life as a type 1...Understand the glycemic index and how it can affect your levels...

New job jitters, running around, sitting, getting show this that and the other thing, b.s. is going for the roller coaster ride. It'll settle down once you get into the work routine groove. Outside of the medical field, I would not say anything to management until the 90day probabation period is over. Maybe tell a coworker you get along with if you are concerned about needing assistance at some point, but otherwise, clam up for a while, as some people will see your diabetes as a risk both monetarily and potential missed work days. I had a job interview that was going great, got a 2nd interview, toured the place, I made the mistake of talking a little too much when discussing the benifit package and my diabetes, suddenly things got very quiet. (uh oh.) Got the quick, polite very much in contrast to the before that point of talking to your neighbour to the librarian is pissed off at me for talking and hustled to the door at that point. So lesson learned, don't ask, don't tell. If your manager is misinformed, or anyone else who has someones ear it may come back to bite you even if it isn't factual as during the first 90 they can let you go for no reason at all. "S/he was not a good fit to the company" is all it needs. And happy birthday Rafi!

You should take a note from your Endocrinologist to the manager where it says you have Type 1 Diabetes and the time that you should have a break to eat your meals and snacks. I took it to my Team Leader on my second day of training because I had to ask for a second so I could verify my blood sugar levels and then look for a juice since my sugar levels where in 44 mg/dl. 😥 After that they told me that when I didnt feel well I could go to the oasis and check my blood and drink or eat there; somehow I felt bad because I feel they didnt like to see me doing my checkup and I do it very discreetly. 😏 So, now Im good and when they see me strange or getting my lunchbag out of time where I have everything from juices, lunch, glucose monitor, insulin pen, they ask me if I feel well, i say Im good even Im not but I just drink the juice in a swcond and later we are ready to keep on!! 😉 What a life!! Its a challenge, but it has made us stronger and intelligent people. WE ARE STRONG; TYPE 1 DIABETES!!

Do you work for Dexcom ? .....lol..have been T1D for 47 years and Libre and Tresiba and NovoRapid via pens has kept me alive..so easy to dose for carbs and exercise, my gut feelings and experience and a sharp needle have worked well since 1973. No blood testing devices back then, just pee on a stick, inject and carry on. Now with Libre am still forging ahead doing white water canoe trips, motorcycling and whatever I damn well please...but please..count those carbs, it really helps. Note...I am 68 years old and diabetes has been my lifelong work companion. Don’t worry about co-workers..people are good and help is always available....911 works in emergencies. Plan ahead so you don’t go low. If you get low enough at work that you can’t help yourself again...911. There is no embarrassment in keeping your brain alive. Hypos will get you long before hypers. Enjoy your work and your life.
