That was fun! It is like camping out without the being in the woods part....Loved the rainbow. I really love that you care about your family and have learned to be prepared. You are a great example of how to be prepared to nurture, shelter, protect, validate, affirm, love and cherish your household with provision in any situation. Keep teaching other households how to do it!

When I bought this house for the first two years we continuously lost power for various lengths of time. SO I went and bought two generators. Since I bought the generators we hardly ever loose power, but when we do fire the generators up the power comes right back on as soon as there running.

I'm sure glad your power outage was of minor consequence for you and your family. It looks like it was a good test of the systems you'll use when and if. I've been urging family to have a "power outage weekend." That'd be where they go through the weekend without utilities.. Just to see how well they really are prepared. I think all preppers should do it from time to time just so they know what they should do, and maybe even find a weakness in their preps. Thanks for the video. Peace.

Always something to learn! I am curious what you can run off your generator vs how much gas you use. We had no power for 4 hours 2 days in a row due to elec co working on lines. No problem if you are prepared! Thanks for sharing Lil Bro! HUGZ

John, great video. Looking at a generator BM 10000 from Sams for 800. Not too bad. What do you think? Not educated on generators. What extension cords do you recommend? Your input is greatly appreciated.
@jnull010 жыл бұрын
Hey Tess, I am not a generatorologist either..lol. It has been my experience that items like that sold at Sam's are usually good quality items, so if your gut instinct is good I say go for it. The cords I use are called 12/2 with a ground for most household items, and 10/2 with a ground for things that use a lot of power. Larger cables helps keeps things from over heating. Hope this helps. J
@AnnBearForFreedom10 жыл бұрын
jnull0 a 12/2 cord with a ground is also (perhaps more recognizably) called a 12/3 cord. Ditto, 10/2 and 10/3. Gauge/number of wires, is how that works. Its a shame Mr. O didn't show up....although I rather suspect you woulda crapped your shorts if he had, LOL. Glad your first power outage of the season was only just a shakedown outage and not a huge problem. Prep on!
@TessCooks4u10 жыл бұрын
John, Thanks, yes that helps a lot. Not sure where you are located but we are in Central PA and I have a feeling (not good) that we are in for a challenging winter. We have 3 (300 gallon aquariums - our babies and love) plus refrig and freezer. Want to be prepared. Gping to Lowes to check out the cords. I also believe I will invest in the generator......will tap us but think it is worth it. Luv your vids. You talk the talk and walk the walk. Most don't. Luv.....
@themightyparthos10 жыл бұрын
Jnull is correct, the longer the cord and the thinner the wire will heat up quicker. Keep the cords just long enough to do the job with little excess and use industrial cords is what i do. As far as the generators go, just do a web search for customer reviews (such as on amazon or ebay) for any news on the particular model you are looking for. Figure in all you will "need" to power in the way of wattage and go over that. Or if you have the "disposable" income, go nuts and buy a 12000 watt power station. lol

Its amazing to think that when power goes out from the grid, you could walk out of the house and see that nothing changes for the livestock. You still have wood collected for cooking and heating the house. The electronic age we are in is BS! Just read a book during these so-called emergencies. I like that you have a solar setup though to keep the kids happy playing internet games. Do you home school your kids?

we lost our power up here in central maine last weekend we had a good snowstorm dumped a foot of snow in our area put the power out on sunday afternoon and it stayed out till tuesday afternoon sure glad we have a woodstove to heat the house along with oil lamps and battery powered radio the only thing that sucks is lugging water need a bigger generator to run the well pump ours runs on 220 volt and the generator isent big enough for that but it will run the fridge and the freezer and most everything we really need but i only like to run it a few hrs at a time like cycle it on for a few hrs and off a few hrs really saves on the gas it uses with cycleing it i can get a full tank of gas go use for 3 days or running it non stop about 14 hrs

in metros we prepare for outages by changing out batteries every year but we also have our outdoor charcoal and wood grills (large and small), lanterns, and small butane stoves for indoor cooking. Each butane cartridge lasts about 4 hours, enough to cook entire meals and heat up water for coffee and tea so you can cook for all your needs on less than $2.00 a day. It's not free fuel of course but it certainly is handy especially when the weather outside is terrible. Of course we have water, food and paper supplies to last us weeks. And, our NOAH weather services warns us of impending storms days in advance. One thing that I do keep with fresh batteries all year round are AC/DC powered fans. During our tropical storms it can get muggy and hot and then come the mosquitos! So we always keep mosquito/insect punks and citronella candles and the fans at the ready for whenever the wind dies down. Our power outages have never lasted more than a day and a night with the usual ones lasting about 4-6 hours. As soon as the power goes out, we head for the shower because we're on an electric grid, hot water goes bye bye within a few hours. Luckily at work, we're on gas so sometimes during storms we just wait it out at work! I like that we both pretty much head for our grills when we have to cook during power outages. We grill several times a month even when we don't need to because it makes the food "holy crap" good. It's nice to see that you've taught your brood not to panic during power outages because storms are nothing to fear for the well prepared! Talk about all the creature comforts at home! You really do prep well. Great job! Your family is very fortunate!

I was without power for 48 hours from hurricane sandy. Great learning experience. I learned that even if I have natural gas it doesn't help the heat situation because my furnace requires electricity. So I suggest having a couple backups. A propane one and a kerosene one. Both are not much money. I use my kerosene heater when it get's real cold now just to make sure it is still in good working condition and my fuel is good. Other than that the rest of my preps worked great. BTW a head lamp seemed silly but was extremely useful.

dont know if this will help but were in canada codes may be different from area to area but a good rule of thumb that ive always went by when it comes to wire sizeing seeing others need to know and i may be wrong is: 14 gauge good for 15 amps up to 50 ft then need to size up to 12 gauge good for 20 amps so depending on the distance of the run will depend on the wire size need to keep your amperage if you size up every say 50 ft you wiill get full amperage at the other end of your wire so 14 gauge 15 amps /12 gauge 20 amps /10 gauge 30 amps 8 gauge 40 amps 6 gauge 50 amps 4 gauge 60 amps 2 gauge 80 amps 1/0 gauge 100 amps 2/0 gauge 200 amps hope this helps some one figure out what you need for wire sizes good luck all and just tryying to help do not take reponsibility for any mistakes made by my self or others just trying to share what i know works for me here in canada also john you could set up a main off grid power panel near ur generator so just filp a switch and house gos from hydro to backup power no needs to worry about which cord will power what just unplug what you dont need powered good luck
@Sheila632510 жыл бұрын
Wow! That's a great way to calculate it. I always seem to get frustrated when it comes to this, and I have no idea why. I just purchased this monster of a cord, for a weed eater, and I swear I could light up Washington DC with the thing, and it's so heavy, that I can hardly lift it. Actually my sons girlfriend picked it up for me, but I told her to make sure it's right for the weed eater, and she spent over $55 for it!!!! Never would I do that. This tip is going to not only save me money in the future, but my back too, from future oversized cords too. Thank you so much.

How many watts is your generator? Edit never mind I seen it now.
@thefaeryman10 жыл бұрын
you could use the 220 ac plug on the generator to feed your main panel. turn off the street main, and breakers that you don't need to power and there is more safety. install a 50 amp outdoor outlet box and 6/3 with ground cable back to panel with a 50 or 60 amp breaker. then you just need a cord from gen to outlet. another way is to have an off grid subpanel that all the important circuits go to. that way down the road when you have more off grid power, it can be run off grid and the rest on grid like dryer and hot water or sauna. but the outlet to the main panel is the easiest thing to do and it's a safe way to run what you need.

Dont get rid of that dead Battery, you can Re-NEW it and it will work for a long time. you have to pour out the acid into a pail, then use water and baking soda to to clean the inside of the battery, dump that and use/fill with a mixture of Alum (Note: Alum is a pickling spice & Non Toxic) and distilled water.
