@@nancyheneghan4760 hi Nancy! This is great feedback. I did not capture this on film but we are doing positive reinforcement training with small freeze dried treats. I will be sure to let you know any progress we make. :)
@coachesalot5 күн бұрын
Yes - training treats are good reinforcement when Kenai follows an instruction or exhibits positive behavior (comes to Ben when called). The feeding by hand is a little different. It will help Ben become established in the ‘pack’ and at a higher level than Kenai. We also use this hand feeding technique with dogs who have struggled settling into a home - because they try to be the alpha. Giving food is the alpha leader’s decision and it means acceptance. Also, Try playing around with eye contact. Ben could stand calmly but not looking into Kenai when he is having a skittish moment. I bet Kenai will be more inclined to come up and sniff…..feeling less challenged. Some breeds like a Kuvaz react to eye contact as a threat….especially with men. They were bred as guard dogs. Generally, when we meet new dogs, we should not lock on with eye contact 1st thing…..

A friend of mine raised two wolf dogs, and the bond they formed was truly remarkable. These majestic animals, with their striking features and wild spirit, connected with him in a way that was both profound and inspiring. To help them channel their high energy levels, he constructed a custom snow sled, carefully designed to accommodate their size and strength. It became a wonderful outlet for them during the winter months, allowing them to run freely and engage in an exhilarating experience while pulling the sled through the snowy landscape. Watching them work together as a team, navigating the twists and turns of the trail, was nothing short of breathtaking.

Humans insist on believing they are more intelligent species, however, if they studied wolves, there's so much we can learn from them. My wolf dog was, we think, abused by the male in the home he came from, so it took my husband longer to gain his trust, but with kindness, patience, it was accomplished and I know Ben will succeed as well. Having Rio helps with the trust issue also. Beautiful video. Much love and peace to you and your pack.

it is interesting how these dogs react. I have lived in several remote areas of Northwestern Ontario and have seen dogs on several First Nations Territories that have various percentages of wolf or "Wolfiness" mixed in their background. What seems to be a common thread is how they gravitate to the "Family Pack " of Alpha Male, Alpha Female and so on down the pecking order, and how they look for that order in their human family. The aggressive factor that you mention I have observed first hand and to people that have not experienced this it can be frightening. Especially in young animals coming into season of breeding. This leads to the euthanization of young animals that are trying to find their niche or place in the "pack" and humans not understanding . The most successful corrections that I have observed where people who firmly without anger or trying to hurt the animal by physically holding the animals head down or pulling it down by lead or collar , speaking firmly without raising their voice just saying "NO", then releasing the animal . This only takes a few seconds or so and the animal realizes they have transgressed the pack structure and will come back into line. What these folks have done is what an Alpha Female or Alpha Male in a Wolf Pack does with their pups and young adults. It is a form of obtaining compliance , order and submission without hurting but gives the message you don't do that. Thank you for understanding and researching how your dogs see the world.

High value treats i use jerky treats are the best way of positive reinforcement. Wolves & dogs also love pack dynamics so when they do something right its important to over the top dramatically praise them, with wolves thats face licking, contact by rubs not so much pets & vocalization. Its important to do so on their level but also as important to never let them dominate you, especially from jump on your back/ behind.

It's possible that Kenai has toruble with men. I had a German Shepherd that was abused by my ex-boyfriend when I wasn't around 😠 After the breakup and moving on she always had trouble trusting men. You are both doing a wonderful thing and he looks like he will come around to Ben soon. Blessed be... ❤

That's great progress. Your bond with Kenai is already so special. Maybe it would be easier for Kenai if Ben sat with his back to him. And without reaching out to him. Kenai still seems to be afraid of Ben's hand. A pretty sure sign that Kenai was beaten in his former life. With Khaleesi, who is an American Akita, it's not so easy either. Also only fully grown at the age of three. Very strong-willed, no will to please and genetically still very close to a wolf. Basic obedience? Well...😅 Where a German shepherd or Malino says: Sir, yes sir!🤨 And a Retriver says: Give me the treats and we'll talk about it!😜 And a dachshund might say: Kiss my furry bum, I'm going to dig a hole! 😏 An Akita always says: Why?🤔 Oh, and lifting her front paw like Kenai does means that Khaleesi wants a cuddle, especially under her front leg, just before her belly, the little bare spot. I always have to stroke and tickle her softly on that spot
