Deadly Landslide Buries Over 2,000 in Papua New Guinea | Firstpost America
More than 2,000 people have been buried alive by a landslide that struck the Yambali village in Enga province of Papua New Guinea on May 24. This number is nearly three times the estimate of the United Nations, which had put the estimated death toll at 670. Now, Papua New Guinea's government has formally asked for international help and its nearest neighbour, Australia, is sending aircraft and equipment to help local rescuers. Meanwhile, the UN is providing food, water, blankets, and mattresses to the survivors. Rescue operations are challenging for the teams who face rainfall, falling rocks, and tribal violence as hurdles.
