1:30 This a bit of a weak intepretation. It is important to know that without their coalition partner, the remaining government in charge would be a minority government NOT able to pass siginificant legislation (or heavily struggling every step along the way with the opposition). This is important to know, because that would mean that the remaining parties could not pass budget allocations, not do investments, not get political decisions done for over 10 remaining months in a period where the German economy is really needing investments and also where foreign policy will reshift again in the US. This would result in a gruelsome 10 months of two parties just taking crisis hits without being able to do anything and would pretty much lead to them losing more votes every single day. Had they waited until the regular election there is a good chance that both of them would have lost another 5-10% of votes due to disatissfaction with their (completely halted) government, which would only lead to bigger shares at the opposition parties. So a prompt re-election leaves the SPD and the Grune with better odds of being part of a new government than if they had kept bleeding votes while keeping a minority government through a financial crisis, while not being able to actually make decisions. So there is a calculation behind it.
