South Korea Shatters Its Record for World's Lowest Fertility Rate | Vantage with Palki Sharma
South Korea has shattered its own record for world's lowest fertility rate. The country faces "national extinction" as its population continues to shrink. But South Korea is not alone in this battle against baby bust. Falling birth rates are a major concern for some of Asia's biggest economies. Governments have been spending hundreds of billions of dollars trying to reverse the trend. Why is it not working? Palki Sharma tells you.

Another cause of population decline in Asian countries is the toxic work culture and never ending work hours. People are always angry and frustrated and simply do not have any time to think about getting married and have children. Even corporates pay little regard to women employees with children, they are just focused on reducing cost and maximise profits.

Exactly my point. If no jobs, how do we provide for our next generation? The cost of raising a human kid is sky rocketing. I cannot take care of myself with the money I earn, how do I even raise a kid? I don't want to give birth and then subject my child to an unfulfilled lifestyle. For the BPL, subject them to abject poverty. How I wish, everybody understood this. And, Palki Ma'am this video gave me proper insights to the same. The stats are insane. Good work!

Remember when we got computers and more automation and we thought we would work less? Instead we work more than ever. There's never a sustainable equilibrium of contentment. It's a never ending push for more profit, more "productivity", more work. But even with so much work, cost of living is sky high and only getting higher, and purchasing power has plummeted. On every turn, we get taxed or charged for something.

I think the most cliche reason is the competition, unemployment and stress among the youngsters. There are people who struggle just to exist. It’ll subsequently result is population decline in any country. The government should be aware of such situations instead of paying money for giving birth. That doesn’t work.

China, South Korea and Japan have similar reasons for population decline. Fewer marriages,late marriages, economic insecurity and entrenched belief among women that they will be pushed back to their homes due to patriarchal and social norms that put the burden of childcare and family care on women. Fear of losing financial freedom looms large in the minds of women. Souring costs of living, lack of economic avenues, hyper competitive environment and toxic work culture that glorifies over working,sleep deprivation and leaves little room for personal life. These nations have to address the social cause of these issues otherwise it will result in societal collapse, shrinking and expensive labour, smaller markets.

@@markaurelius61 mothers have very little support in raising children, even those with partners. We’ve lost access to family and community that could help due to mobility (ie moving for better jobs). Child care is considered to be an individual problem not an institutional one e.g all daycares shutting at 6 pm whereas in most Asian/ south Asian countries staying at work till 9 is a bare minimum. We also expect our women to work full time and progress at the same rate as men. Most companies have an up or out model at least in India. If you’re not progressing every few years and do just your job description you’re asking to be given a poor rating and a poor rating means being managed out. Shiny office buildings are often very far away from where actual employees live so that’s a commute of at least an hour either way adding to an already long day. And if you complain then you will be told it’s your choice. So then if you say yes it’s my choice and I will opt out for a few years to raise my child I am immediately tainted by the fact that I thought of doing anything else with my life other than a corporate career and that makes it impossible to get rehired. Mother and children are treated as an inconvenience . So isn’t it natural that women just opt out

This is the side effect of having a very long work hours and having women in workforce. If women are expected to work 9-9-6, there’s no time for taking care of kids, cost of child care shoots up and discourage people from having kids. Also note that kids in S.Korea have a record for studying longest hours, competition for good colleges are immense, and kids who emerge from such a system don’t want their kids to suffer the same.

On top of it after spending 30+ years in intense struggle to settle down they get exhausted and finally need time to breathe and enjoy life by themselves. So no one is interested in starting a family and face all the challenges. As we know life starts when people start a family that is when the real deal is. Young people get exhausted even before that in life. Plus women has extra struggles like giving birth to a child is going to be an all round effort, it is going to change her body, her thinking, her emotions. So young women are even more afraid to start a family.

The problem seems much worse than the statistics indicate. According to figures shown, by 2100 the population will reduce by half. But calculating it differently, if the fertility rate is 0.72 instead of the ideal 2.1, then on the average four couples will have only three children amongst them. This implies eight people are being replaced by three in a single generation. So within twenty years the effect will be felt, where young workforce taking on jobs will be reduced by less than half.

I wish I could share pictures in comments. If you look up global 'Cost of living' and 'fertility rates', put the two pictures side by side and you get a pitch perfect negative picture of each other ... There you go. The entire mystery everyone keep debating and wondering the cases of, solved. Turns out, if food, shelter and energy are not a worry, it's not a huge difference whether you have a household of 2 or 5. If it IS super expensive, then the difference between 2 or 5 is the difference between a bearable life, or one you'd rather not live...

Even in India, in the mid/upper middle class staying in urban areas the fertility rate would be similar to these numbers. As urbanization increases, fertility will decline because of complex life and lack of support systems. This will be true for India too in some years.

@scott5966 3 ай бұрын
This is a good observation. Even in countries with higher fertility rates on average, they are declining among better educated citizens and those living in urban environments due to cost and economic burdens imposed by childbirth upon mothers. It would be interesting to see fertility rates broken down by social economic status within certain countries like India, Brazil, Nigeria and Indonesia. For example, in Jakarta, the fertility rate is 1.8 although the overall fertility rate for the country is just slightly lower than 2.1

@crimsonrain9570 I think a person is plenty to look after two parents. It doesn't matter what the population is. There are single children you know, and they all have more elderly people to take care of irrespective of the birth rate in the country. Even still, the main reason behind the low birth rate in Korea as far as I understand, is their societal belief that poor people shouldn't reproduce. They also have a serious attachment with beauty so, unattractive people also get out of the equation. That's basically how I see it.
@UmightBwrong

@@crimsonrain9570 A higher demand for workers means wages go up. Not really a problem. Economies will adjust. This is about the power and influence a nation can have. But, no one is going to admit that. The more people, the more powerful a nation can be. It is also about nations wanting to maintain their cultural identity. The nations that are struggling are the same ones that do not want immigrant populations to balance out their workforce. If there were truly a lack of factory workers in S. Korea and they were paying a good wage, people would travel from nearby places to offset the need. This is what has happened in Europe and the US for centuries. But, if a country has a very anti-immigrant mindset they will indeed fall into this trap when things get complex.

There is nothing related to only women. In America, Europe and Asia similar phenomenon is happening. Men are now avoiding the marriage due to Gender biased laws. Only Africa and Middle East are above fertility rate.

Good journalism on a complex subject. Ultimately low fertility is a reflection of other societal problems that aren't being fixed.

i feel like living in joint family or having culture where your parents can take care of kids is much better so that both parents can work and not worry much. but with increase in nuclear family structure parents just can't afford raising kids alone and women had to sacrifices their job at times which create more issues.

The low birth fertility rate for women in Korea means very little- the data should be segregated to those who choose not to give birth and those who can’t. The former is a victory for women’s rights, and a subject for further anthropological studies. Only the latter should be addressed as a gap in the policies. The ‘low fertility rate’ discourse assumes that all women should or wants to give birth, which is not true.

Which would a "modern" woman choose: a 1,000 USD hospital bill for a child or a 1,000 USD new smartphone
@apaddy5390
@apaddy5390 3 ай бұрын
I’m sure it easier to pay back the 1,000 for the smart phone because you can continue work without having to take off to recover after child birth or find child care, or even have life long health issues like prolapsed insides or bladder problems. Things men don’t think about because pregnancy and child birth is not of their concern.

@@apaddy5390 The issue was about money. My comment was about money. Yes, OF COURSE women deal with pain because of childbirth. Men can't be blamed for that. Men suffer in different ways. It's nature's way. Yes, childbirth is a sacrifice, but there are a lot of potential benefits. There are a lot of older women that regret not have children when they were younger. They can't turn back the hands of time. ⏳ 😼
