My notes: - allegory > Orwell's goal is to show how the principles of communism are corrupted > Stalin abused the principles of communism which began the Russian revolution and Russia became capitalist. (maybe even worse) - Russia was capitalist prior to the 1917 > was ruled by the tsar but taken over by bolsheviks who introduced communist ideas. - Carl Marx > German intellectual who articulated the rules of communism > believed that capitalism should be abolished to create an equal society. - communism > idea that the state should equally allocate all resources and properties to the citizens. - conflict within the Bolshevik party between Stalin and Trotsky > Stalin assassinated Trotsky. - Trotsky wad very committed to the principles of communism. - Main principle of communism is to abolish hierarchy. - Humans tend to create a division between themselves even in a communist society > Napoleon and the pigs are seen as superior to the proletariat. - importance of education: Squealer manages to obfuscate the truth - he is a propaganda tool - Orwell shares the message that we should all be equally educated in order to question the actions of a dictator. - The ideas of an animalism society is destroyed due to Napoleon's hamartia which is the desire for power - Stalin was a power- hungry tyrant. "Our lives are miserable, laborious and short." (Old Major) - asyndetic listing with gruesome adjectives > emphasises how extremely mistreated the animals are by humans. - Old Major articulates the ideas of animalism in hopes that the animals will form a utopian society full of peace, however this is disrupted by the pigs greed. "Napoleon is always right." - instills fear into the animals so they keep obeying Napoleon. - manipulates them into doing whatever Napoleon orders them to. - anyone who opposes Napoleon will regret it. "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others." - highlights the degradation and destruction of the principles of animalism. - creates a hierarchy. - juxtaposition - creates a haunting atmosphere around the novella as it touches with the issues of society.
