This station changes habits over time. For a long time it used North Korean martial music for its lead in, then it went to what passed for popular North Korean music. Later it started to include South Korean stuff. Lately it has been mostly Classical. My recordings here on KZbin are by no means inclusive of all music used by this station (I have IDed over 40 songs used), and I did not try to pick NK or other music, I just grabbed a couple at random.

This example is an exception - the song is 서울의 찬가 (Song of Seoul) by the South Korean singer Patti Kim. An earlier commenter IDed the song and I confirmed it by sampling it is Shazam, and just then for fun I purchased the song in iTunes! Thanks so much for all your videos - your channel is a great resource of the unusual!

@p13m4n It is definitely 5 figures, in notation it would be 5f, either 3+2 and 2+3 or 3/2 and 2/3. Several numbers stations use such pauses and rhythms. In this case the same message is sent in both halves of the transmission, thus the "I will repeat that". It might be, and this is speculation, that the two halves are said intentionally different to force the recipient to hear them differently, possibly catching errors in reception. This station also sends a 4f, 2/2 and 1/3, format.

What is this software? I believe I have found a numbers station using an iPhone hamradio app, and wish to verify it with some other software in case it is a gimmick added by the designers.

Numbers stations are not only voice, there are also Morse and Digital numbers stations. As far as I know NK stopped all HF numbers transmissions, voice or Morse, in 2000. NK has reportedly continued using other methods of contact on MF, including Voice of Korea (which is no more powerful than many other countries similar transmitters). As for “Morse Code Stations”, every nation has Morse transmission, of many types, so not exactly sure what you are saying there. Perhaps an example would help?

@TheLegoboy1997 That is a cluster beacon, or letter beacon, or Enigma MX, whatever you want to call it out of Vladivostok, Russia. The frequency is 5154.2 kHz and it is sending the letter "F", dit dit dah dit.

This station has been on the air for more than 30 years, I first heard it myself in the 1980's. It has used many frequencies and keeps a very predictable schedule of transmissions. The transmitter has very high power output and can be assumed to be a large installation. This is not a covert transmission, but rather an overt one. Logically it is very unlikely a North Korean spy in the South would have access to such equipment, daily, or could operate that long covertly. Present your evidence.

Yes, there are still many numbers stations on the air each day. But no need to wait until you get a radio, there are many web based remote radio sites/applications out there. Globaltuners is a good web based one, SDR-Radio is another, you must DL a client software but it is free and VERY good. Also, the NL based Twente web SDR is good. Look into all of them, kind of like Hamsphere, but you control a real radio.

@p13m4n The format is 3/2 before the repeat message and 2/3 after the repeat message. 3/2 or 2/3 as applied to numbers stations often refers to rhythm, not pronunciation. Though not a Korean speaker, in the first half it sounds to me like she says something like 289/54, or eebaek palsip gu / osip sa, or two hundred eighty nine / fifty four. In the second half the same number would be said 28/954, or eeman palcheon / gubik osip sa, or twenty thousand eight thousand / nine hundred fifty four.

This software is the GUI for the Perseus SDR hardware and is simply called Perseus. What iPhone ham radio app where you using and what was the frequency, time, and date of the numbers station you found? All of this information can be used to verify or eliminate the possibility of it being a gimmick or real.

Someone may have shown you something they "claimed" was deciphered from such a transmission. That it is correct is very, very, unlikely. A properly used OTP is essentially uncrackable, not by NSA, KCIA, or anyone else. It can be "deciphered", but it creates a very high number of possibilities and you can never know which deciphered text is the correct one...and you can make it say almost anything you want. If what you saw was "correct" (extremely unlikely) it would be a news worthy event.

The ap is called HamSphere and the fx was 01.813.00. It's currently not broadcasting but I heard it on dec 5th 0440 London time. There's also a fx beside it, 01.805.00 which was transmitting constant morse code, but not being proficient in it, I couldn't translate it. Right now the 1st fx is offair and the 2nd fx is broadcasting.

Do you have a link to "the algorithm generally used to decipher numbers station"? Since most numbers stations appear to use an OTP there can not be one "algorithm" that could decode them. In over 30 years with thousands of hobbyist, some of them quite advanced mathmaticaly and technologicaly and working in the fields of encryption professionally, it appears that only one numbers station message (from Cuban V02) may have been cracked, and that one because of an improper use of the OTP.

@p13m4n Why they use NK music has been the source of some discussion. The answer, naturally, is unknown. It has led some listeners and folks on the web to assume the station is from NK, vs SK. My favorite possible "reason" has to do with the probable location for the recipient. If you had a radio on listening to NK music, and you were in NK, people there might not pay much attention or you might be able to play it off.

This V24 station is for South Korean operative in North Korea. Since using computer/any other sophisticated devices is rather hard over there, and operatives have to catch this broadcast with handheld radio. So your theory I think is more or less right. The song used in this video however, is a South Korean song.

@@minseokshin4514 Yes, this is a South Korean song (It is Hymn of Soul, by Patti Kim), but at the time of this recording, in 2011, several other V24 time slots did use North Korean music. And 2 years before that, in 2009, I think almost all of the time slots used North Korean music, some of it martial. I have even heard it us US Rock.

I thought that might be the case. FYI, Hamsphere is not a real radio program. It is a radio simulation program and is not connected to any real radios to receive real over the air signals. Hamsphere often has recordings of old numbers stations playing on its various bands. I have even heard this recording in this video on Hamsphere ;)

There is no proof that the results there are "decoded" from this or any, numbers message. Your posting is also not the first time someone has linked to that page from here. Periodically this claim to have decoded is made, but no one has proven that it has happened. Many people "claim" to have done so, none of them have presented proof or have stood up to scrutiny. Often the same people who claim to have decoded claim this is North Korean in origin, despite proof of a South Korean source.
