I ' visited' Lands' End briefly a few years ago with the family. Thought it was outrageous to have to pay to visit somewhere before I'd even got to park! ..turned around Immediately and left...I used to love Padstow as a child, we went there every summer. Like all these charming little coastal towns, they get ruined by mass tourism and capitalists who rip everyone off..as you rightly said , shameful.

Blaming Capitalists for high prices??? that's rich, in a socialist country where everything is taxed to high hell so the government can give everything away for "free". Moving the burden of paying from those who use the services to everyone who pays taxes. Glad I don't live there!!

I worked at Rick Steins for 4 years in Newquay, I did 2 shifts in Padstow, the were constantly under staffed, the turnover of staff was rediculas. Both the times I went there i hated it, the second time I did it 9am until 11 pm with a 45min break.the staff get treated like crap and genuinely don't care.

I'm a trained chef and have worked an quite a few 5 star resorts here in the USA. May be I should not say this, but most of these celebrity chef restaurants are cook out of a bag. Meaning that things like the mix for the fish is pre made and comes out of a bag. Same with all the sauces probably the mushy peas as well. They are just made to the chef recipe. They do this for consistency. I 100% agree with you. Always go to the mom and pops restaurants. They are less likely to use out of the bag food stuff as the pre made can be quite costly. I never go to any of these types of restaurants or even chain as they cook from bags as well. I have even worked at some 5 start resorts that had classically trained chefs like myself cooking out of bags. Hell I worked at one where we used Stouffer's frozen Lasagna's for wedding buffets @ $50 usd per plate. So yeah don't fall for the big fancy names. You rarely get you moneys worth. And no I do not cook anymore the industry is a mess right now.

Rick Stein relies on tourists going to his fish and chip shop (once) just so they can tell their mates when they get home that "we went to Rick Stein's place" in other words a tourist trap and a very expensive one at that.If I were Rick Stein I would be very very embarrassed watching this, I guess the £££ rolling in matter more!!

Fond memories of Cornwall, greedy car parks, parking tickets outside hotel when taking luggage in. Lands end rip off and nothing much to encourage you to go again. Around Easter 1974 I made a trip from Dover all along the English south coast with my parents. The drabness of it all still haunts me. We once made a stop at something called "Little Chef", an absolute horrific experience. What a joy it was when we finally got back on to the European continent. Seems that not an awful lot has changed after all those years, except for having to consume a Rick Stein cuisine in the vicinity of some Russian gulag building in the middle of a parking area.

Went to Padstein some years ago and had a look at Rick's place. The prices were astronomical. If you wanted to mug yourself even more, there was a display of purchasable souvenirs, cooking equipment and what I can only describe as bric-a-brac for equally outrageous prices. We got delicious fish and chips from a modest chip shop a stone's throw away for about a quarter of the cost. It was a shame, because I was a bit of a foodie in those days and had always liked Rick Stein's TV shows.

Live in Cornwall, got fish and chips once at Steins in Falmouth...never, ever again, it was the most over priced and fish less (all batter) meal myself and 2 friends ever had. What's more folks were queing for 45 minutes for a table. Hysterical! So back to Harbour lights or Sanders or Cousin Jack's, less cost, less grease and much nicer. Love Cornwall

Guess the weed was parsley, but it cudda been a stinging nettle lol. F & C musta been crap if you’re complaining of “greasy” that soon. You don’t usually feel like it’s greasy until you have finished and feel you don’t want fish and chips for a week or two.

Me and my wife have really enjoyed this mini-series, watching each instalment. Very insightful, real-world experiences of an EV. Totally agree with your conclusions. We’ve all been taken for a ride (excuse the pun). One issue not addressed is the lack of generating capacity in the UK, which only has around 5% spare at peak times. How will we generate enough electricity to charge millions of addition cars, even if we had the infrastructure. Onwards…

We holiday in Cornwall most years and I really noticed this year…August 2022…that they really know how to charge people. Car parking especially is a total rip off. I’ve had a quick look at going abroad next year and it’s not that much more expensive for 2 weeks all inclusive in a a nice hotel. The Cornwall holiday industry really need to make sure they are not driving people away.

I’ve always enjoyed Steins fish and chips. But I’ll agree with your criticism. It is very expensive and the service is not exactly friendly, I’ve found. You should’ve taken a short walk into Padstow itself and eaten it by the docks. That’s what we always do after we’ve done the camel trail bike ride. I can’t believe the sachets of vinegar. That’s a deal breaker for me. It’s part of the fish and chips ritual to have salt and vinegar shaken on just before it’s wrapped up in paper. No more Steins for me if that’s what they’re now doing. Appalling. Another entertaining vlog Lee, great stuff.

It is pretty bad when a famous celebrity chef puts out such bad quality food so over priced it's insulting to customers. If you're a celebrity chef charging a premium price for a common dish in England then it should be amazingly good. Chris must not care about his customers or reputation. As a businessman of 30 years plus, I'd never sell a shoddy product or provide a shoddy service to my customers that I value. You do your very best to meet and exceed customers expectations. No wonder his price is so high. Customers won't come back and he's relying on his name brand and tourist trade which is shameful really especially for a professional chef.

£2 for a can of diet coke is simply shameful. At today's prices 24 cans in Tesco is £9. £0.375 per can. He'll be paying closer to £0.30. A six fold mark up is disgusting. I thought the fish was reasonably priced to be fair, but that curry sauce is a joke - I'd insist they filled it up properly before paying.

I spend a lot of time in Cornwall and Padstow. I don't half laugh when I see the queues of muppets waiting to be shafted at his establishments. Two friends of mine got rinsed for £140 in his main seafood restaurant (just along from the toilets....) and ended up having a pasty to fill themselves up afterwards. Chips Ahoy for fish and chips, any of the three pasty shops opposite the Ship for oggies, the Shipwrights for Proper Job and the seafood stall outside the pub for crab sandwiches. Job done.

Hi Mate, That's frightening cost for a couple of chipped up potatoes and a very small fish. In reality that's all it is. I'm stuck for words really. Chips are just that! cut up potatoes that cost very little to buy. I am friends with an ex Chip Shop owner in Fife and he got out of it. He says the days of fish and chip shops are numbered. Apparently it's the cost of the fish to them that's killing it and that's why there's less chips and smaller fish at inflated prices. He wasn't making any real profit with the cost of heating the expensive oil in the fryer. I don't think it's the chippies fault all the time. Were losing our traditions very fast here in UK. It's all cheap crap processed Kebabs and McDonalds etc now. Really sad. Steve in Fife.

The best fish & chip in England is the little shop over the swing bridge on the left hand side around the bend in Whitby North Yorkshire, they are absolutely delicious. It has won many awards for its food and is recommended by Jeremy Clarkson and James May, when they filmed an episode of Top Gear. Been to Whitby many times and always buy my food from there, I can recommend the fish cakes and the Scampi also. Wish I could remember the name of the shop, it's NOT the large chip shop in the centre of Whitby were the chef's wear the tall white hats. 👍🙂👍

Also instead of keep talking about the poor ev infrastructure why not mention all the other things like. Lithium mines increase weight for vans. Depletion of council funds having to replace good vehicles with electric. Chinese power stations producing battery's. Chinese leaving thousands of new EVs outside on acres of land to rot. The list goes on and on. Every part of EV production is a scam that's doing more damage than any combustion engine.

Isn't that just typical at 39:40 , loads of broken glass and other small debris and two blokes with a house broom each to sweep it to the central reservation, from where, the glass will eventually end up back on the road! What's wrong with getting a road-sweeper in to clear it up and take it away in 5 minutes?

Just happened on this video and as my husband and I will be staying at the Land's End Hotel for a few days next month, and are very excited to do so. But not so much for the hotel, but also for the location. It's a gorgeous location but there are tons of things to do within a very close range. We'll hit the outdoor theatre to the east, small villages to the west up to St Ives. There's lots of standing stones and Penzance is not far. We'll be coming from Portsouth, where my great grandfather was born. It will be such fun! I'll let you know if we find issue within the Land's End Hotel, other than the cost. The commercial side of Lands End is shocking, not a chance in hell Id pay for having my photo at that sign, that charge is shameful and just disgusting. Was really good hearing you say about how friendly us Scottish were when you were up this end, we are a friendly tribe. I was down at Ascot races back in 2019 for my 50th and most of the cab drivers were grumpy B's When me and my daughter were getting off the plane at Heathrow we were saying thanks to all the cabin crew which is just natural to some of us, you could see how surprised they were at hearing two people say Thankyou as we left the plane, as all the others said nothing. All the Uber drivers we had were all really friendly, one was from Somalia and when he heard we were from Scotland he wanted to shake our hands when we were back at Heathrow to return back to Glasgow, he said every Scottish person that's been in his car have all been so friendly and chatty and always shake his hand, he said he was learning from them so that's why he wanted to shake our hands like he had learned some new custom. Thankyou for sharing your journey with us all Lee, all the time effort and dedication you put in really is very commendable, full credit to you as I for one know just how time consuming the process can take. Some interesting facts that you can bring up about Rick Stein while you tuck in 1) Stein means stone in German. Most Steins and Bergs (rock) are Ashkenazi (they had to take surnames from the land) 2) Guess how much Rick Stein is worth? £32 Million (Jamie Oliver £240 million) 3) How many Michelen stars does Rick Stein have? ZERO! He has no Michelin stars 4) Rickenstein was given an OBE and a CBE for some reason 5) HOWEVER His ex-wife - Jill Stein (Nee Newstead) had an OBE in the 2013 Birthday Honours for services to the restaurant industry. This is not Jill Stein of the American Green Party - who is an Ashkenazi 6) JiIl received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Women 1st Shine Awards, which recognizes women in the hospitality and service industry - So that's a thing then?! 6) Rick Stein is actually Christopher Richard Stein. Jill and Rick still run the restaurants together since 1975 but were divorced in 2007 3) Rick Stein is from Oxford and went to Uppington Public School where he failed all three easy A-levels - English, History and Geography. He moved to a cram school in Brighton, gaining E grades in English and history After appearing once as a guest chef in Keith Floyd's 1985 series Floyd on Fish and in his 1986 series Floyd on Food, he was offered the chance to present his own series - like the "travelogue" style of cookery show pioneered by Floyd - on BBC television, using Floyd's producer and director David Pritchard. This caused a feud, only resolved shortly before Floyd's death. So he stole Floyds idea and crew..... Stein was awarded the OBE in the 2003 New Year Honours for services to tourism in Cornwall and the CBE in the 2018 New Year Honours for services to the economy - but not for his services to Gastronomy His nephew Judge Jules: He has lived in North London for the majority of his life, now settled in the Hampstead area with his wife Amanda. Jules has a villa in Ibiza and during the summer months he and his family split their time between there and North London. His father, Shaun O'Riordan, starred as Eddie Larkin in the sitcom The Larkins, which aired on British television between 1958 and 1960. Jules is the nephew of celebrity chef Rick Stein. His wife, Amanda, is the cousin of techno DJ Tommy Four Seven. Jules net worth was estimated to be US$42 million as of 2023, making him one of the Top 30 highest net worth DJ/producers in the world What an amazingly talented family. How come no one in your family ever got famous and here we have a famous chef and then the Number 1 DJ in the world PLUS Jill Stein who also gets an OBE!!!! What a family!!!! So talented!

You mean just another poncy chef talking out his Rs about tasting the `sea` in the prawns and making out he lives a rustic lifestyle `back to mother earth` type of verbal shyte, while raking it in? The TV chefs are all much of a muchness and all talk utter inane rubbish...you got the obligatory chirpy cockney barrow boy, "Na`t I mean, whack it in!" with his obligatory gut & lisp...Jamie whatsisname! Then the silly bycycle-faced numpty who always seems to want to make something edible out of stale bread...sits there with a blank look while gobbing down his man-made dog squat....probably coughs it all back up again when they turn the camera off! Not forgetting the baldy black chef who makes out he is gay, prancing about like Julian Clary...when in fact he is straight with a wife & kids... Of course you have face-lift `bad-boy` of cooking, who swears a lot while talking utter shyte....hmmm....didn`t seem to want to bully people when he was doing the programme in a prison with murderers....tended to keep his big fat gob shut then! The only one worth a look is sexy Nigella....especially when she is teasingly licking the cream off the spoon....

I really hope he sees this, most locals down here can't stand him and his restaurants/shops are aimed purely at tourists that go cos of the name. Much better chippy's around for half the price and a full portion

What a shame. The cod looked a little over cooked to me, I might be wrong but it looked on the side of stringy rather than flaky. The less said about the dribble of curry sauce the better, for a thimble I don’t think it’s unreasonable for you to expect a full pot. Chips cooked in beef dripping should be delicious so to see you not even find them good is pretty shocking. Thanks for taking one for the team, shame you had to though pal. Great channel, been watching for ages, only just realised I’d not subscribed though - that has been rectified! Cheers Al

Lee, Regarding Rick stein! I bought fish and chips from him over 10yrs ago. My experience was the very same as yours. Over priced fish and chips, fish was saw dry. I still remember that experience to this day. Please anyone watching and reading these comments, stay away from Rick steins fish and chips. Over priced robbery and crap food. As Lee mentioned save your hard earned money, and buy from a family run chipy.

When I was at college in Plymouth 50 years ago, we had days out at Land's End and the surrounding beaches. No wallet rinsing turnstiles, cark park cameras, invoices for breathing and prices for everything. The good old days. Then Peter De Savary got hold of it....

I am a huge Rick Stein fan but I have sadly admit if that's what they serve up in his Padstow fish & chip shop I won't be going. That fish looked horribly greasy and there are not chips..as for the mushy peas and curry sauce... the portions are too small. I rate this overpriced dissapoint a 4 out of 10.

This set of travel vlogs in the EV has been one of the best things I have watched on KZbin. Your camera skills, picture quality and commentary has been terrific. Looking forward to seeing the final cost but it would be more interesting to know how much waiting time there has been to complete this journey. Excellent vlogging. x

It's not even at the "end". If there was a scaffold platform over the cliff edge where you were genuinely standing right at the tip of the land then fair play. But this, nah. Devon's closer and gets my tourist money, far fewer traps and oddly, similar landscape.

dont agree, these mugs who follow and endorse tv chefs keep coming for more overpriced average grub and love a good shafting, they are the same airheads who shop at M and s and Waitrose. Jamie was seriously geared and the banks got shafted to the tune of 80 million as did his complete staff(1000 sacked) but he ripped his revenue out of the business in personal dividends(5 million) before he folded.........total wanker with no moral backbone and walked away leaving his suppliers high and dry too(20 million).

Padstein is an insult to the true Celtic Kernewek people of Kernow. This is always being done against us. Padstow is Padstow and most wish that Stein and Smitt would just go away. They are ruining it here. Smitt takes credit for Eden when it was not even his idea , he just jumped in and took it from the true man who created it. But many do not know. There is a book which can tell about the trickery. Nobody likes Smitt or Stein. I hope God can forgive them , but Satan is all over and stopping people from seeing what's going on. 😕

Just paying for the name. Why should it be good because it's Rick Stein's? Not as if he's making it personally! I guarantee there are at least half a dozen chippies in a busy seaside tourist town like Newquay, charging half the price for twice the size and quality.
