‘Garden Of Remembrance’ is a beautifully moving and personal song from the Scottish singer, and stands as the album’s most poignant and personal moment; a gorgeous piano ballad wrapped in a stirring arrangement that showcases one of the best vocal performances of Fish’s long and illustrious career.
With an ever-increasing awareness of old age and its associated illnesses through the death of his father in 2016, and his elderly mother moving into care with Fish and his wife in January 2019, he was presented with a touchstone for the lyrics of the song. The aptly titled ‘Garden Of Remembrance’ tells the story of a married couple dealing with the early onset of dementia and the resulting issues of a husband who's "Lost between the here and now/Somewhere that he can’t be found” and his wife.
With such a delicate and deeply touching subject matter the emotional delivery borders on heart wrenching, with Fish’s superbly spellbinding and fragile performance. Lyrically, he has dared to enter a very dark personal space where most of us fear to tread and has managed to convey a deep beauty that celebrates life in the fading light of days.
“The song was put together as though we were painting a delicate piece of Royal Doulton china,” comments Fish.
To complement the brave and deeply honest song, its accompanying video is equally exceptional. Directed by David Lam and Hannah Thompson (daughter of Fish’s long term collaborator and illustrator Mark Wilkinson), the outdoor shots were filmed at daybreak during lockdown on a deserted beach, a glass wall separating the couple, who at one point are very briefly reunited.
Fish's intense performance, seated alone in an art gallery lined by artwork from his career, is focused directly on the camera where he allowed his raw emotion to take hold during the filming, resulting in a genuine tear at a crucial moment.
“The video involved a complicated approach as the whole country went into lockdown just as we were due to start filming,” explains Fish. “I had to be filmed in front of a white screen in my home and then the gallery around me was created as a miniature 3-D model into which I was magically transported. Meanwhile the couple were filmed on an Essex beach, rather than in Scotland as intended and the gigantic glass wall across the beach was intended to symbolise the separation of the couple. However it came to take on another meaning as lockdown separated families across the country.
“I was very aware of my mother in her room only 15 metres away and, although not on camera, I felt her presence intensely during the performance. My wife's hand on my shoulders at the end of the video added to the emotional dynamic, drawing together yet another circle within the story.”
The new single is taken from the brand new double album Weltschmerz, marking Fish’s eleventh - and final - studio recording. It is an extraordinary piece of work that brings down the curtain on this phase of the Scotsman’s successful career.
But whilst Weltschmerz emits a certain air of finality and closure, it is not a depressing record. Besides bringing us Fish’s finest set of lyrics to date, Weltschmerz is also his most adventurous and varied piece of work. It will stand as a remarkable achievement, a truly magnificent end to his recording career of over 40 years - during which he has sold millions of records both as the frontman of Marillion and throughout his three decades as a solo artist.
The 84-minute double album is available to preorder now from fishmusic.scot in multiple formats including double digipak CD with 16 page booklet and as a gatefold 180-gram double vinyl.

I lost my beloved wife of 31 years 3 years ago. She and I would listen together to your music from Marillion to Feast of Consequences and cry at the poignant beauty your words created! Now I cry alone. This is a intensely emotional song and one of simple beauty for me! How much I would give to have her here to enjoy this with me! Thank you, Fish, for an amazing journey in song through the years! My Lori and I love you and wish you well my friend!

I played in a band from Ireland called Winter in the 1990s that was very influenced by Marillion. This is a masterpiece. Absolutely beautiful in form and the lyrics are as brilliant as anything from Clutching at Straws. I can relate to this song on so many levels and it brings tears to my eyes every time. Love ya Fish.

The lyrics, the video, & WOW those chord progressions particularly the end of the first verse, I thought you'd saved your best till last with this album's title track, but this is a step further again. With this album as an epitaph to your musical career, your art/craft will certainly outlast your "sell by date", "Ars longa, vita brevis". See you again on Friday big guy, and thanks again for being there at the best & worst of times.

A friend introduced me to Marillion's music when I was 16. It was the Fugazi album and I soon bought Script, Misplaced Childhood and then Clutching At Straws to my collection and played them endlessly. I'm 53 years old now and I still love those early (Fish era) Marillion albums as well as the solo Fish albums. Thank you so much for a lifetime of amazing music sir.

This song is so on point. It's not only a song, it's introspection and extrospection in balance, it's a sharing of loss and a sharing of vulnerability, regret and nostalgia for all that was and is no more. It's what many of us experience, at different levels, but we're too afraid to face. I can't thank Fish enough for the life insights that he has shared over the years...I am 53 years old now but have been following him since I was 18 years old. He has never disappointed, and never will. More than a musician, I think he is one of the most influential poets of our times.

From the first line of Script for a Jesters Tear to the last note of Garden of Remembrance. . . what a journey. I ignored Marillion and Fish for years. I thought they were just a weak carbon copy of early Genesis but I was so wrong. I do CD exchanges on my channel and my buddy gave me a recent Marillion album (FEAR) and in time I grew to love it and then checked out more of their discography. The Fish years are amazing and "Clutching At Straws" got to my soul like few albums ever do. I now love Marillion and I love Fish.

Tremendo artista. Friend... I've just written something very similar as a result of some songs I didn't know about by Fish (Weltschmertz and Openwater) which ended up demolishing that myth of copying Gabriel and Génesis, which undoubtedly influenced their creations but with Marillion and then as a solo artist, Fish surpasses and leaves me in awe of his tremendous talent. Today I greatly admire all his work and I can hardly find any quality exempt song... I admire Fish and today I listen to him all the time. tremendous artist.

I have been on this journey with you since 1983. Having never heard of you, the Script album cover pulled me in at a record shop while on holiday and the rest has been a beautiful journey. As a 12 year old boy in Aiken, SC I was one of the few in my town listening until Misplaced got some air time with a local station. Seeing all of the pictures pulled from all of the years brought a tear to my eye and a smile to my face. We have all cried with you, broken ourselves down with you, rejoiced with you, and built a better version of self with you. The memories and the music will never fade. Thank you Oinkle Fish for bearing your soul and thank you for the music that quite literally saved a life, my life. I know I am not the only one. The jester is dead, long live the jester.

He hears a voice, he tries to recognise the source and place the name A face so familiar, the smile soft and warm The memory evades him his mind wanders on Down rabbit holes, a darkened maze a place to hide and be alone Where thoughts land like snowflakes in the palm of his hand Swift melting moments, his tears a surprise He tries to remember just what made him cry With the beautiful stranger who was holding his hand He’s lost between the here and now Somewhere that he can’t be found She’s still here Her love a ghost of memory, she’ll wait for an eternity He’s still here The empty room, moth eaten curtains, drunken drapes hold back the light But for solitary sunbeams on dull chandeliers Colourless butterflies their fate now revealed In silken webs forever held within the sails of yellowed shrouds That gather dust above the dancehall floor The silent space, she stands alone and in her heart she hears the sound The sweet lift of music that drew them so close, their first dance together With a world at their feet, not so long ago He’s lost between the here and now Somewhere that he can’t be found She’s still here Her love a ghost of memory, she’ll wait for an eternity They work the soil, they sow the seed, they’re side by side upon the earth Growing together now forever apart, with a love so embracing held in their hearts But nothing between them no memories shared No recognition in his soft, pale green eyes, she’s still here He’s lost between the here and now Somewhere that he can’t be found She’s still here Her love a ghost of memory, she’ll wait for an eternity He’s still here He’s lost between the here and now Somewhere that he can’t be found She’s still here Her love a ghost of memory, she’ll wait for an eternity He’s still here And they’re still here Lyric copyright D W Dick 2020

Wow! I lost my 1st wife, 18 years ago. A lady beautiful inside and out, cruelly taken way too soon. So much more to give. Now just a memory, but still living in my heart, while is still have breath in my body. This song brought a tear to my eye, not much does that, these days. Thank you!

When Fish and Marillion divorced, I was one of the kids who went to live with Dad. I followed Fish more closely than his former band (although in keeping with my analogous theme, I did stay with Mom from time to time and thoroughly enjoyed our visits). Songs like this are the reason why. There are very few songwriters I consider True Poets; Bob Dylan, early Springsteen, Neil Peart and a couple others. Fish is at the top of this list. Now, onto this particular song... This song and it's perfect mate, the amazing video component, hurt me, cut me deeply. I am 52 and have spent the last almost 30 years in desperate love with a memory. That ghost of a romance has haunted me through every relationship, even lurking in the dark corners of my only attempt at marriage, at age 46 and lasting less than two years. I live a solitary life these days, working with addiction victims and devoting my life to the service of others. It's a good life, I still perform my music from time to time and I'm in a relatively happy place. But that ghost still comes to me in the night, still haunts the deep recesses of my wounded heart. I said that this song hurt me, but I meant that in a good way. My feelings are hard ones to describe, yet once again Fish manages to put into eloquent verse that which lies deeply hidden within me. Thank you for this, my never-met friend.

Wow, Powerful stuff Dave. I hope you meet someone special, it’s never too late. The first time I heard Fish was at a Rush concert in 1986 and have been hooked ever since. Also, I share your thoughts about true poets. Fish and Neil have always been my favorites by a country mile...

@@stephenwebb921 Funny you mention Rush. I saw Marillion open for them, too, but it was in '83 when Rush did those five shows at Radio City Music Hall prior to the release of Grace Under Pressure to loosen up and try out some of the new songs. (They used to do that back in the day.) Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it.

Wow, reading your comment, especially the story of your life while listening to the song gave me goosebumps. I felt something of the feelings you describe when I first heard "Melanie Still Hurts" from an obscure band called The Icicle Works. The music is different, the lyrics as well, but are ingenious in their simplicity. It's always wonderful to find music that resonates with our most inner aspects.

Thank you for the positive responses, folks. What I have always admired about Fish is his ability to reach us beneath the surface, the rays of light filtering through to the common places we share in the depths. He has been the catalyst, once again, for random collisions between disparate souls.

His wife's hands on his shoulders at the end, and the look in his eyes, nearly made me break down. I have lost all four of my grandparents to Alzheimers, and I am painfully aware that my parents (and myself, for that matter) are not getting any younger. This entire album is absolutely fantastic, and a very fitting end to a brilliant career. Although if Fish ever wants to come out of retirement in the future, that would not break my heart.

No doubt. Lyrically Fish is my Dylan, with a better grasp of melody and emotion. Having followed him for 40 years, the song itself is one thing but this film is so devastatingly emotional that it is nearly unwatchable.

There use to be a program on Dutch radio called "The LP Show", where they would play songs of recently released albums. I was a huge fan and would drag my cassette-deck down from my chamber in the attic to the living room every Thursday evening, so that I could catch all the interesting stuff. One night, late 1982, the presenter announced two songs by a band I'd never heard of, called Marillion. I duly pressed the Record button and, after the first two bars of He Knows You Know, was utterly blown away. Over the years, hearing more songs and gaining more understanding of the lyrics, my love for the lyricist and singer Fish grew to great heights. The power, the expression, the shear eloquence of his poetry is second to none. Now, having just heard this song, I feel much like I did 38 years ago. Derek, if you read this: Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Couldn't agree more. It has been a fantastic ride for almost 4 decades now. Saw him twice, met him once. He is greater and taller than ALL of us. He knows, and knows how to express it, you know. Am writing a book now, wish he could find the time to edit it. A biography about forgotten sons, garden parties, roses of Damascus, gentlemen excuses, gardens of remembrances, a totally fugazi world, weltschmerz and lots more. If you read it like this it's like Fish's bio, but it isn't. The lady who the book is about, died at the age of 84 this summer and she was a mega-fan of his lyrics and music. Slainthe mhath, mrs Math

My best friend is now slowly walking the aisle into the dark and it is killing me and making me cry because there is nothing that can be done about it. He is now in a place that is not his home because it is no longer possible there. He cried in my living room last year when we heard the song together. It was like saying goodbye, but we didn't know it then. A past love once said to me, "Memory is the only place you can't be driven from." She was wrong. Dementia drives everything away no matter how old you are when it hits you. It's so unfair. For all. Fish has touchingly set the whole topic to music. Thank you for this song.

My Mum was put into a care home recently with Alzheimer's and with Covid -19 restrictions it's not possible to see her at the moment. My Dad is 95 and cared for my mum until he fell and fractured his leg. He's recovering slowly but I fear he may never see my Mum again. Although I am truly lucky they are both still alive, it's so difficult to accept that things will never be the same again.
