Great videos. I appreciate when you do cover the tips that would be otherwise obvious to an experienced person, because skipping over the obvious is often the issue that makes a simple project more difficult. The way you are constantly teaching as you go about the project is very helpful. Keep up the great work!

Good call on the mask. In future videos you might consider mentioning organic vapor cartridges for the paint and acetone. Many folks would not realize that there are mask cartridges specific to the airborne hazard; particulate cartridge for dusty work, organic vapor for paints and chemicals, etc. I'm planning to gel coat my canoe so I'm paying close attention. Thank you.

I now have some silicone cups and stirring sticks. I also bought a silicone mat. It means once I've used a cup and a stick, I put them to one side and once the resin has cured it simply peels right off. Also for using putty and small amounts of resin for touching up, the mat has the same ease of cleaning. I don't have to buy and store numerous cups and sticks etc, there's very little waste, and tbh it means my workspace is neater and easier to manage.

Hello, You asked for comments on content, so I love what you are doing and I am subscribed of course. There is almost nothing out there on chopper gun use. I purchased a small chopper only gun and am building it out to spray resin an catalyst separately. that is 3 streams. I build 1932 and 1934 Ford hot rods. They are small cars, but big enough that I am tired of hand layup. The small chopper system seems like the ticket. I am guessing that a lot of other people would be interested too. Sometimes you don't know that you need something until you see it in action. The first time I saw a CNC milling milling machine running, All I could say for 3 days was WOW !! Now I have 8 CNC machines. Great channel !!

Greetings from Canada. Wanted to tell you how helpful this video was. I restore racing dinghies as a (serious) hobby but have never done a major gelcoat job before a current project which required the cockpit floor to be redone. Lots of experience with epoxy and with paint but other than the simple gelcoat repairs, this was a first. Just finished the floor and results were terrific (not to brag). In large measure due to your video showing me not so much what to do but rather what to expect. Thanks!

Another benefit of switching to a pan is that it thins the pot depth and will slow down the kick. Old boat builder I know used to pour his epoxy and poly into a cookie sheet to thin the depth out.

First time visitor here who is considering fixing up a cheap used boat where I live in Florida. I definitely like that color since I'm retired from the Navy! I forgot about those brush hairs; we clamped the metal bristle band with pliers before using them but there's probably a better hack by now. I think the coatings have come a long way since I painted the Boston Whaler I had 30 years ago.

i refit my 40 footer (an Oyster SJ41 for those 80's boat enjoyer like me) with all the tips i learnt here, because i love the capacity of Gel coat. So useful to have the process, the tools, the conponents, an understandable english (i am not an English native) and the tricks in a same place. As in one of your video, you said we could bring our 2 cents : the best tools i discover to clean the gel coat excess (when filling my stress crack) is the Bahco Scraper (maybe there is other scraper, but this 650 mm Scraper worked perfectly for me), very smoothly used, it is just marvelous : i smoothly scrapped all the gel coat excess on my hull in one afternoon), thanks for the trick with the blue tape to mark all the tiny spot to be treated.

I am a complete novice on boats and this is making the project I have taken on much less scary as hell down to just worried, I bought a FairLine Vixen 1979 and to be honest she is in not bad a condition for her age, however at 63 years old, disabled, army veteran my family are thinking I am crazy but they are trying to be nice about it, my 2 adult sons are doing their best to help but both have kids and all the ones with kids know, it is very time consuming and working just becomes, well some of you know how it is, wish me luck and Thank you again for giving us and me the courage to fight the good fight and help the old girl back to condition to sail the seven seas, well one that is really close to the coast if I am honest, the Sea Fox will sail again.

I'll be doing the same. I'm that guy that has to repair a fairly deep crack that I think is a impact crack. It's under the boat so I'll be doing a lot of over head work. I plan on using a dremel to grind the crack out to widen it and grind until I hit fiber glass or the crack is gone. I'm hoping the glass is okay so I can just use a polyester filler and gelcoat paste to repair. I was hoping to use gelcoat paste to refill the crack if I don't have to do any glass work. I just don't know if that's okay? It seems like it would be. All I'd be doing is using the same material gelcoat that I removed.

Great video! I'm trying to figure out whether I should use gel coat or paint on an old box trailer that I inherited. It has the paint chipping off the entire surface. I just realized today, that it is fiberglass underneath which is showing through all over the place. Can I sand on that fiberglass? I'm just one woman on a mission to honor my Dad's trailer. Any tips that anyone has, I would much appreciate!
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV Ай бұрын
It's hard to say what is the best option for your trailer. There could be pros and cons to either material. Generally, I don't recommend trying to gelcoat over old paint as there could be compatability problems between the two materials. That would mean every bit of the old paint would have to be removed before attempting to gelcoat it. That would be quite a bit of work! I lean towards repainting vs. gelcoat just based on that alone. An option you might consider is a 2 part epoxy based paint, something that is much tougher than a one part paint, but easier than gelcoat on the prep and application side of things. I believe that Interlux or Petit paints make some marine grade paints that could work for you. I hope this helps, and I wish you all the best with your trailer project!

Just ran across your channel. You've got some good content for sure. Alot of people enjoy the learning aspect of it vs just lets say spray with chop and roll it out. Also some people are scared to do the fiberglass/gel coat just for the fact of not knowing. Its fairly simple just knowing the basics as your teaching. Keep on making the videos like this, there very informative.

Hey Captain Joe, I just bought an '85 Bluewater Coastal Cruiser, she is beautiful! however her name was changed a couple years ago and on the stern and you can clearly see where the old name was removed from in the gelcoat. You can actually feel where the letters were. I would like to see a video of an efficient way to restore the stern so you can't see the previous lettering. My guess is wet sanding? You are doing a great job with your channel. I finally actually want to do fiberglass repair. I hope for you and your family that this Channel is working for you and your company. Great job! Tony

Congrats on your purchase! Yes, wet sanding with a rigid block and 600 grit, then 800 and 1200 to finish. Then compound and polish, followed by wax should do the trick. Best of luck!

Just subscribed. Picked up a 15ft hightide this week. Needs a good bit of love and care but I'd really like to restore her. Definitely digging the content. Happy I can roll on my gelcoat. Gonna do a full strip and restore on the gelcoat this winter. Has a '98 70hp yamaha 2 stroke. Gonna get it running this weekend. Keep the content rolling. I need all the guidance I can get. This is uncharted waters for me.

💡Have you tried parchment paper over the resin? It keeps the air out so you don't need wax and then it peels off giving a smooth transition. Really good for small repairs. I have yet to find anything that sticks to parchment paper.

Hey fish bump! Love your work and it has really helped me getting through my first boat renovation, im in the stage of doing some gelcoat and and was wondering if it is possible to gelcoat over the old polyester hull? I have mailing some companies here in finland where i am at and theyre saying that putting polyester gelcoat over the old hull is a bad idea and that i should use a primer, what are your suggestions?
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 8 ай бұрын
Thanks ! Glad you are enjoying the videos all the way from Finland! Yes, you can gelcoat over a polyester hull< it is just a lot of work if you want the gelcoat to be glossy. It would have to be applied to the hull, then wet sanded and polished to make it shine. Some might say that painting with a marine paint system would be easier. Thanks again for watching!

I've been watching your channel and I've learned so much. A few years ago I started on my own boat project and I think it came out fairly well for a newbie. Many older boats have a gelcoat webbing. There are not too many videos on how someone can do webbing on a boat. I think this would be a great little boat to do webbing on. Is there a chance you can make a video on webbing.

Thanks so much for watching! That's a great suggestion, but the owner wanted to go back with a solid Grey. We have done splatter finish many times before, I will video that next time we do one.

Glad you are enjoying the videos! You typically add wax on the last coat of gelcoat, this is what helps it cure tack free. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching! Just remember that this was more of a utility skiff and that a roller is going to give the gelcoat a texture. Sprayed or brushed gelcoat is going to be smoother. You might want to try some test panels first to see what works best for you and your application.
