Tyvek suits and full respirators in 95 degree heat and 90 plus percent humidity is not safe or good for your health, not gonna risk a heat stroke just to keep up a upload schedule. I hope you all understand.

You can test by leaving 2 samples in a bucket of water for a few days. Possibly even a designated spot in a lake or sea since that's more realistic, then come back to them after a few weeks or maybe even months

with this new product that you are promoting, do a flex test, 6-inch wide, 4- foot long 1/4- inch thick plywood and epoxy it like you showed, with the gel-coat as the top final layer, two coats, then fix one end to a solid fixture and with the other end clamp/screw down a solid board to it, 2x4 or some just solid and do a 90 degree twist both ways, making it a 180 degree test. I am very interest in the results. if this product is good it will not break adhesion.

Help... First, love the videos! I really could use some advice. Fibreglass boat with a white gel coat. It had some chips and minor cosmetic issues including some small stress cracks. Not too many thankfully. Used a die grinder to clear them out back to the epoxy, acetone to get any wax off and sanded it to get good rough surface. I first mixed the gel coat with half gel and half West Systems 406 colloidal silica to make it a peanut butter consistency. I tinted a small batch of the thickened gel coat. Managed to make it a perfect colour match. (skill? or luck lol). Made enough for 3 times what I needed. Used your tape trick. Filled with gel coat all the areas needed doing. I used up just under half what I made. But..... ugh. I didn't put in enough hardener, or maybe none... my bad. After a few days it hadn't hardened at all. I dug out as much of the unhardened gel coat as I could, used the die grinder to remove rest of it, and made repair areas slightly larger (1/16" or so bigger, no big deal, just to make sure I got all the unset gel coat out). Cleaned it out again with acetone. Roughed it up again. My question: How long can the pre tinted white thickened gel coat last? (no hardener added). I'm about to try again (with more hardener this time lol) but the batch I mixed (about the size of a golf ball or two) has a crack from I assume drying. It was put in a small plastic container so it shouldn't get any air other than that in the container. It's been two weeks since I tinted it. I really don't want to mix another batch as I doubt I'll be as lucky matching the color a second time around. My gut feeling is that it should be fine as it's just gel coat with tint, but the crack in it caused some concern. It was a lot of work to clean up the mess I made, I would prefer not to do that again lol I did some tests this time for the hardener amount. It was hard to calculate as it's such a small amount. My test with a sugar cube sized amount of gel coat with four drops of hardener seemed about right. After 20 minutes it seemed pretty firm. About 80 degrees here. Any advice on that or anything else would be much appreciated and most helpful :) Thanks again @FishBumpTV

Glad you are enjoying the videos! Sorry to hear you are having some gelcoat curing issues. I don't typically use thickened gelcoat that isn't fresh, so hard to say for sure how it will do for you. Sometimes you can add a bit of neutral or clear gelcoat or polyester resin to a mix like that to help with it having dried out, but without changing the color at all. You could also add a small amount of fresh white gelcoat back into your thickened gelcoat mix to freshen it up. That shouldn't change the color much, and will help bring the original gelcoat back to a nice creamy consistency. As far as catalyst for small amounts like that, a general rule of thumb is 10 to 12 drops per ounce, or 10 to 12 CCs per quart. 4 drops for a sugar cube size seems like a touch high to me, 3 drops in high temps should do, that will also give you a little more working time. Although it is better to slightly over catalyze than under catalyze.Also,be sure to thoroughly mix in the catalyst with the gelcoat or you will have curing issues.I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

Instead of bonding the bolt to the gel coat surface, prior to gel coating cut the bolt head into your testing piece. Now apply the gel coat, let set, and then pull the bolt head out. You will test how much of the gel coat is pulled off as the bolt head pulls through. Does it sheet off a large area? (poor bond?) Does it crack only at the head? (good bond) Does it bubble a large area? (Elastic coat but not well bonded)

A benefit, and some might say the purpose, of peel ply is that the amine blush rises to the surface through the peel ply and is removed when you pull the peel ply off. If amine blush is the reason for the failure of gel coat over epoxy, then there shouldn't be an issue if you remove the amine blush right?

I found that using a wire mesh vegetable strainer to run the old gel coat thru before catalyst is added saves a lot of aggravation from all the chunky bits that develop in an older previously opened container. The automotive paint strainers are just too fine for gel coat. Got to have a bucket of acetone to clean the strainer with after use.

with sticky gel give it a wipe with acetone let dry and then sand min clogging to none . As I use to use vinyl ester for edge repairs on Kayak molds , Which I use tape to hold repair(no paraffin wax) wiped with acetone then sanded and polished to a high sheen to match tooling gel. And was much stronger than a gel repair as I had to prove to my employer as I did with many processes they put on my plate to conquer.

How would it work to use a layer of regular vinylester as a bonding agent between epoxy and gelcoat instead if we can't get hold of this brand? It looks thick and glossy when applied on a flat surface but how would it spread out and look on a vertical surface for example? Would it all be a lump at the bottom of the surface or would it look as even and as good as this?
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 3 күн бұрын
Vinyl ester is closer to epoxy, but still may not bond properly. The system 3 sb112 can be applied vertically, but you would apply it in two thin coats, vs 1 thick coat. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
