Fisher 30 Ep 28 - Can I create a template out of plywood, with a glue gun?

I bought a 1976 Fisher 30 Northeaster motorsailer in great need of "some" TLC.
In this video I - among other things - clean the boat inside and makes a template for a structural member, out of plywood and with a new wireless gluegun.

When the very beautiful boat is standing level you can use a laser to put lines. not a level laser but a steady laser. I use it always to draw the lines were I want to put the bulkheads or kabinets. It makes your work much easier. Love your channel and you make me laugh. The fisher is in my eyes one of the nicest disignd motorsailer. Greetings from the Netherlands.

Thanks for your kind input. The interesting discussion is how to measure if a boat like this Fisher is levelled. As is now the inside floors are about levelled (tipping a bit forward), but on the outside the keel is much higher above ground in the bow than in the stern. Measuring from the 3 roofs on the 2 cabins and pilothouse gives 3 different results. I guess we should assume the inside floors is a good start. I have an excellent Bosch 3-way laser and will look into that. Thanks and geetings from Norway :-)

If it's any consolation, I would be explaining about the lost pencil only to find it in a pocket or behind my ear when I reviewed the video. Before you start interior work, it might be worth making some simple measurements to see if the hull is deformed. When it was built, I suspect internal bracing would have been fitted before the hull was removed from the mould. You have taken away much of that and the hull is only supported on a few points above the keel. It may not be the shape it was originally intended to be. More external supports may be needed. Regarding the template; I think you will need more accuracy for both the shape and the angle of the cuts to gain maximum strength from the piece. Some simple tools, like a carpenter's bevel and laser level would be useful. Make a template frame and then, instead of just points, a full edge (which could also incorporate the required angle) to give you the actual curve of the hull. This will need to have quite a bit of planing and sanding work to obtain the required fit but the return in strength will be worth it. You will probably still need to use thickened epoxy to fill minor spaces but the result should be much better. Even if the one made fits well, I suspect that will be down to luck as much as anything. Interesting and entertaining work. I admire your dedication.
@hsobstad
@hsobstad 5 ай бұрын
Haha. Mike, that has actually happened to me (finding the pencil, balancing on my ear). This was during a test on school, and I asked to borrow one since I could not find it. No one told me where it was, just borrowing me a pencil. Naturally I found it later (embarrassed). Good point to check if the hull is deformed (to a point that matters/is visible). The keel rests on 3 spots. But take into consideration that there is a embedded cast-iron keel, going all the way from the bow to the stern (ends at the sump, just forward of the propeller). That is stiffening up the boat, longitudinal, but do not prevent a twist of the hull. I have 6 external supports (3 on each side) supporting the hull on the sides. Not enough? Your points of the accuracy of the shape is interesting. The original bulkheads were far from precise in their cutting. I might even show that as there is one more bulkhead standing, of which the condition seems ok. I will se what I can do. Must admit that my skills in this area is lacking, to put it mildly. But it will not stop me from making a boat. But do not expect the results of Sampson Boat Co (Tally Ho). Thanks for your knowledgeable input. :-)

Very amusing episode. I was in Bergen in the summer of 1972 as a crew member (bellboy) on the 'New Amsterdam' liner. Beautiful city but rather expensive if you like drinking beer. I remember going back on board regularly just to quench thirst for 10 cent a glass in the mess.
@hsobstad
@hsobstad 5 ай бұрын
Thanks. There are still a lot of cruising ships that arrives each year, as Bergen is the "gateway to the fjords". Yes beer and alcohol has "always" been expensive in this country. That is a political decision to protect the people... We have a state-owned shop selling all alcohol above 4.6%. I love that! How can that be, you may ask? The answer is very interesting. As this shop is state owned they are not supposed to earn money, just cover their own expenses. So they have no incentive to sell shit. This also means that they dont sell shitty stuff. And buying wine for an entire country on the world-wide market makes them a big buyer. So they get better prices and are about first in line when excellent wine is for sale. So cheap wine is expensive in Norway, but expensive wine is cheap. (Did that make any sense?) :-D
@hardyvonwinterstein5445
@hardyvonwinterstein5445 5 ай бұрын
@@hsobstad I like it when governments do not declare war on alcohol and so do not produce maffia. They should regulate and take the maffia money themselves. You cannot win a war against peoples desire to consume. Anyone remember Al Capone? So today I can buy a bottle(0.75l) of reasonable, heavily taxed 40% whiskey at the German Aldi for €7,99. Bourbon 8,99. These are hard-drugs. Are all Germans addicted to alcohol? No. They handle it. So it would be logical to end all these crazy wars on consumer drugs. I heard that 70 percent of Dutch police capacity (tax money) is spent on fighting drug related crime. That's not durable. These cops should not fight consumables. Following the path of reason it would occur that probably all drugs should be free to be regulated for tax revenues. Yes you do make sense. Lateral thinker. Do you think my reasoning makes sense?

Hi Helge!! As for the exhaust issue ... would it be possible to create a quick release system for removal -- possibly two brackets that span the current location with quick release strapping allowing the muffler to sit in the brackets and strapping to hold in place. I understand the desire for access below, however that location as you have said already has the correct orientation for the water flow and its location below that sole hatch likely helps to keep the sound muffled as well. Great to see your editor again ... your interactions are very entertaining ... nice nail polish color by the way!!! That is one impressive Hi-Fi system ... I totally agree ... if you enjoy it, it's worth it!! Thank you for the better views of the empty hull too!!

Hi Robert! Thanks for commenting (a lot). I must confess I am a skeptical about quick-release connections. An exhaust-leak might be lethal so (NOx) I will have to be very sure about the quality of those connections. Also, such connections will often occupy some extra space, and that is something I dont have. I will consider changing the muffler to a standing type. Haha. The nail polish is a bargain with Sara. She helps and get to paint ONE nail. ;-)

Hi Simon. To avoid further damage to mental health I will try to behave. (NOT!) :-D Very much agree that thinks tend to get much too serious. War and suffering is serious. Small stuff is not and should not be serious. (We are all dead in 100 years and no one will care anymore). I think one should follow ones own dreams. All within limitations and priorities. I would love to go sailing full time. But that is not possible as I early in life prioritised to have a family. And since I am a only child I am alone to take care of my father (my mum died 5 ya). So there are limitations. What is then possible? Going crazy with a stereo-system is one great opportunity. Local motorcycling. Having a cabin on an island (bringing the wife). And then prepping for a cruising in Europe with a Fisher, while I have to stay put, and then go cruising later when my father is no longer. All positive things, but within what is possible for me. (Of course I could give a damn and run away, but that is not me). :-) So you are recommending Jan Ackerman. Must look into that :-)

It is vacuumed but not washed with water, as the temperatures was below freezing point. But I will fiks that soon. In the meantime I will focus on templates, so progress will be. Have your lovely assistant hold even with some point on the boat while you move to to another point and pull the stoppers. Beauty of this is that line of sight is not necessary. From the walls I removed it seems to me that the manufacturer cuts from approximate templates (maybe due to hulls differs a little bit in thickness if manually made?), and use fillers when installing. I may use thickened epoxy if I fail to get it spot on. (I will do my best).

Thanks for your humorous feedback. You are right. There is no turntable to see. I do have a simple but very good vintage Technics SL-10. They look like a toy but are really good, especially for its price-tag. I decided early not to go in the direction of analogue LPs. I only do streaming. From my experience songs that are recorded on analog tape sounds best on LPs, IF it is a studio with good equipment/recordings. Songs that are digitally mastered sounds better on CDs or even better when streamed with good resolution. I have friends with record players with several tonearms/pickups, costing $$$,$$$ and with a hugh collection of excellent LPs (records). That is cool, but streaming is by far easier, cheaper and with an insane selection of songs. I use Tidal HiFi (Master).

Hey Helge well done mate why make something easy that would be boring. I have made templates in similar way to you however any horizontal piece I clamp a level to while I'm gluing, as long as your boat has been shored up level it will help in the long run and really doesn't take any longer

Hey Colin. Haha... I probably do make things difficult for myself :-D Next time I will bring my laser. The boat is however not totally levelled. It is a bit low on the bow, but not by much. But the keel is way lower to the ground on the stern than on the bow. So what is then horizontal? I dont know, but hope the original inside floors is a measurement.... Thanks for your input. :-)

Can you please do a video on your motorcycles? What brands and sizes? Why do you have so many? What do you use them for? Can’t you just have one?

I will consider that. Those are not all my bikes. Two of them belonging to two of my sons. 2 belongs to a neighbour and friend. 2 belongs to two other friends. The rest are mine, which makes 4 (SRC950, CE-04, CRF300Rally and PX200). The 950 I consider selling as it is hardly used after i got the CRF300. The CE-04 is very fun to ride, but only for urban use (it is electric). The old Vespa PX200 have been in my ownership since it was about new and I cant sell it. It is irreplaceable. :-) There you go ;-)

Takk.

Hello to the Netherlands! Zwolle, a previous Hansa trade town, just like my home town of Bergen. I did have a design. Now I dont, since I change my mind several times since I draw that plan. Good thing this is just a leisure boat. Thanks, and greetings from Bergen, Norway. :-)
