@hsobstad4 күн бұрын
Mads? Like Sail Life Mads? Yes, he prefer using thickened epoxy and uses a plastic bag where he cuts off the corner. I use pre-made polyester filler, which has a thicker substance and will not squeeze very well off a plastic bag. But the idea is still brilliant. :-)

Or maybe the height/size of my ego, which according to my wife is huge=tall, but hard to measure? :-)

I am an experienced polymer chemist from the resins and coatings industry also an amateur boat builder and sailor. There is no chemical bond with any of the resin scenario's Epoxy though has a vastly superior bond over old polyester and is far far more water resistant. What I have seen you doing so far though is fine but anything concerning the outer skin Epoxy only 100%. Done properly Epoxy isn't necessarily more expensive its also not important to use the expensive name brands their only advantage is the premixing of components and help for the beginners. I use the cheaper bulk brands of resins Silica and filler powders, I also use the wood flour from my sanders. Epoxy done well uses far less resin than the same polyester job in a repair. Epoxy is also far far more resistant to water oil, diesel etc etc. A disadvantage is Epoxy is so resistant it can delaminate over itself even over new epoxy. Polyester comes into its own in a new build of a moulded fiberglass boat where its cheaper to build in substance and thickness. I build my new boats with wood and epoxy which is really a wood composite boat.
@hsobstad5 күн бұрын
Hello, John. Thanks for a thorough and easy to understand feedback on my work. I really appreciate reasoned and constructive criticism and strive to improve my skills and work. From what you write I interpret that what I have done so far is OK (but not necessarily excellent). The work with all the bulkheads is on the hull. But with outer skin I guess you mean the outside of the hull (and especially underwater hull). I have done repairs on the outer skin, using polyester. Both on the keel by the sternpost, patching of throughulls and re-doing the bow-propeller as that work was a disaster (from a previous owner). I still think it was ok result. Did coat all of the bottom with multiple layers of epoxy-coating. Would you redo it all with epoxy? I do use a cheap brand (Biltema) for both epoxy $60/kg and polyester $11/kg and both has worked well for me. Exciting with a composite wooden boat. Does that indicate multiple layers of wood, wetted out with epoxy and laid in different directions or solid wood glued together. I would belive the first was the strongest. Will the wood still soak water, if exposed?
@TheBeaker594 күн бұрын
@@hsobstad That sounds very expensive for your resins Its hard to compare as I live in New Zealand but I pay nz$145 for a 5L pack of epoxy I think its about nz$2 per euro so about 14.5 euro per L. Polyester is about half that per L For my next boat I will be buying a 25L pack which will be cheaper per L. That will be a 15ft power skiff for fishing. I guess my point is, done well Polyester works but Epoxy is much better and more forgiving to amateurs. Epoxy coatings are amazing at keeping moisture out and making polyester last much longer. My first keel boat was an older fiberglass boat with osmosis issues. After skimming the hull I coated it with an epoxy barrier coat and those issues disappeared. Your below waterline work will be better than the original so good enough if you do have to do it again then do it in Epoxy and you won't have too again.
@hsobstad4 күн бұрын

Hi Helge! Marvellous the storyboard for your sneaking out at night to go and work on the boat! Great stuff, good Sara! :-) Your family seems to think you're a bit freaky, but you're not! It's SO enjoyable your "other parts" of your story! On the long run, of course having a double layer of fiberglass will keep the boat together much better, but if you thing the effort to dismount old furniture (even not glassed!) I think you have plenty of enough. Why didn't you dismount EVERYTHING BEFORE starting back? (Just curious...) I thing your tender could benefit if left longer on the tow...in the downhill of the wave created by your (marvellous) motorboat.. (just arrogant! 🙂) Everyone of us watching you would LOVE to have a friend like you! Keep On! 😀
@hsobstad6 күн бұрын
Hello Max. Thanks. I am acting out a bit. But it is just for the fun of it. The reason for not dismounting everything is that it is very practical to have some of it in place. Like the steps inside the door. That tender is lousy to pull after the boat. Not its cup of tea. :-)

Good work Helge you are making tangible progress on the Fisher, at least you are creating rather than destroying, good find on the cleats too. It seems to be a common wifely trait to have a go at our workwear, she often shakes her head at a tee shirt I rescue from a skip and even if I wear it all week, failing to understand that there is no point putting on a clean one if it is going to be just as dirty in an hour. As I said to my wife recently while she talks about the environment I am actually ‘doing my bit’, rather than talking about it.😉👍⛵️

Hi Helge!! Great to see that the cabin work is moving along as well! Great score on the new cleats for the Fisher -- always good to find vintage parts in good condition. If i understood correctly ... you were using the laser to try to site for an adjustment for the water line? When you first set up the laser i thought that you were trying to double check the level of the boat to make sure that the sole would be level as you move forward with the interior build, but then you seemed to be looking at the water line while taking into account the various displacement loads. It left me wondering which was actually the case. Keep up the great work!
@hsobstad7 күн бұрын
Hi Robert. Yes, that laser-exercise was a bit ambiguous. The point was to check if the boat is now aligned correctly so that I can more or less determine what is flat/water-leveled inside the boat. Since the present waterline is not correct I needed to see how that line will be in the water, when the boat lays like it does now. I had to do it twice since it was too much light at the first try. :-D

Hi William. Great to read that you have a Fisher 25. Impressive little ship. Installation of windows. That will come, but not yet. I am keeping the circular windows in the bow section of the boat. Also keeping the windows in the pilothouse. The rest of the windows will be changed to circular portholes because these are easier to keep watertight as the rubber gasket is easily accessable, and the old windows are in bad shape. Right now I am patching the rest of the holes from the old windows. The new ones will go in as the interior gets in place. The windows I removed was riveted, as is also the case for the windows in the pilothouse. I will remove the pilothouse windows as well, to seal up and reinstall them. I am not sure I will use rivets for reinstallation.
