The fisher only broke off its attack because it was afraid of the human approaching it. Otherwise it would've easily killed that mortally wounded fox. It probably came back for the fox after the human left the area.

The fox was not out matched. It was out foxed. The Fishercat most likely ambushed the fox and thus the Fisher had said fox by the neck. One on one the fox would stand a very good chance. You notice it ran from the fox when it came after it twice at the end. Right.

The Fisher punctures wind pipe if it misses carotid artery. Wind pipe is like plastic. It does not close up. Blood trickles and fill lungs. Cruel suffocation for canine.
@ErikAndrew-q2p
@ErikAndrew-q2p 12 күн бұрын
@@amishpat5201 Fishers, mustelids, and most of the caniformes (which Mustelidae falls under), despite their inherent intelligence, typically don't "aim" for the windpipe or the carotid artery, which is ironic... you'd think for such cunning creatures, they'd have a whole system. But no. The Feliformes, or cats basically, are the carnivores that consciously aim for the throat, the spine, the back of the head, etc. Specific areas, because they want less work. They want it to be quick so they can eat. Its kind of like how wolves, African wild dogs, dingos, jackals, etc. just bite anywhere they can, or try to disembowl their prey so it will bleed-out faster. That's if it's a larger animal. Smaller rodents, reptiles, birds, etc. are usually just eaten whole, alive, like ferrets with prairie dogs, or coyotes with rats, etc. They're a snack! But for larger prey, mustelids and all caniformes will tirelessly pursue and exhaust the animal until they can get close enough to inflict a fatal bite, and let the animal bleed. Basically. lol.

It seemed more like the fox was defending its den or territory against the fisher, which may have been targeting the young foxes hidden away. if that was the mother or father fox, they did a good job standing their ground. The noises the fox makes fill me with grief. It’s painful to listen too but I’m sure the fisher was very hungry. A kill like that would have been a boon for them in the colder months and who knows, maybe she was putting on weight to nurse her young or maybe he needed a kill to save himself from starvation. The fisher wasn't in a face off fight notice it was avoiding the fox teeth by maneuvering . Once it was startled by the human the fox was able to potentially bite back. Predators avoid direct conflict as much as possible. The reason the fisher let go in the first place is because it saw the human as a potential predator trying to catch it.

Absolutely gray and red fox could pair up. I used to work on a fox farm and many colors can be mixed for varied results. Also, I've been bitten by many foxes. It hurts, bleeds and scars somewhat, but I'd guess a fisher bites harder. I hope to never find out.

@@Me-yq1fl perhaps, it's been quite a few years. We started our fur farm when I accidentally tapped a red fox in one of my raccoon traps I had set to thwart the decimation of our corn fields. My dad put the adult female fox in a cage and over the course of about 3 months, had her tamed to the point that he could reach in through the holes in the cage with his fingers and scratch her back. She would squeal with excitement every time he came near. He bought her a mate from the breeder up the street and she produced many litters.

Well the fastest way to get attacked is for the fox to turn its back while the predator is still close enough to jump on the fox back again. The fox having teeth as well could easily bite the fisher which is why the fisher ran once the human startled it. "Attack" is a common strategy of defense for the weaker of of two animals fighting. That's why a squirrel or muskrat will often charge at a mink if it manages to get free of them for a moment, rather than trying to run away. This fox might have been fully aware that it couldn't outrun the fisher in its weakened state, but that charging right at it might thwart or delay the fisher's second attack.
