@@amishpat5201 Fishers, mustelids, and most of the caniformes (which Mustelidae falls under), despite their inherent intelligence, typically don't "aim" for the windpipe or the carotid artery, which is ironic... you'd think for such cunning creatures, they'd have a whole system. But no. The Feliformes, or cats basically, are the carnivores that consciously aim for the throat, the spine, the back of the head, etc. Specific areas, because they want less work. They want it to be quick so they can eat. Its kind of like how wolves, African wild dogs, dingos, jackals, etc. just bite anywhere they can, or try to disembowl their prey so it will bleed-out faster. That's if it's a larger animal. Smaller rodents, reptiles, birds, etc. are usually just eaten whole, alive, like ferrets with prairie dogs, or coyotes with rats, etc. They're a snack! But for larger prey, mustelids and all caniformes will tirelessly pursue and exhaust the animal until they can get close enough to inflict a fatal bite, and let the animal bleed. Basically. lol.

@ericl29694 жыл бұрын
"Attack" is a common strategy of defense for the weaker of of two animals fighting. That's why a squirrel or muskrat will often charge at a mink if it manages to get free of them for a moment, rather than trying to run away. This fox might have been fully aware that it couldn't outrun the fisher in its weakened state, but that charging right at it might thwart or delay the fisher's second attack.

This guy was so big and fat, for a nano second I thought Wolverine. Pennsylvania had the evolutio from Coyote to CoyDog to Wolf. The Cougar has returned, sparingly. The Elk have returned. Wolverine could do well here if not hunted by man. I suspect they are here already. Nature fills the void. People do not hunt and kill these animals. They tweet. I didn’t think about a fisher and do have them in my area. Also a few pine martens but they are mostly further north.
@alwaysmakinglyrics7340 Жыл бұрын
The fisher was trying to avoid the foxes jaws long before the person startled it. The fisher not wanting to be attacked by what it perceived as a predator let go off the fox thus loss the advantage of avoiding the foxes teeth. Predators usually avoid direct conflict. If the fox ran immediately the fisher would have just jumped on it immediately because it could avoid the foxes jaws.

National geography published some article a few days ago where they showed fishers actually attacking and killing Canadian Lynx, and it tore it apart to hide pieces to later, and they are also the only animal who successfully hunts porcupines. Their feet with claws can turn 180° so they can attack porcupine from above when the porcupine hide its head against a tree. Fishers don't have a problem to attack other predators like foxes either.
