Went out in my new old AWD Sienna to find a camping spot. Armed with my Glock 20, saw, ax, fishing rod and no tent I managed to have a very successful day and night camping in the cold.

For the lighter out of fluid: remove the metal cover from the lighter by bending both halves away from each other. Then, hold the toilet paper against the lighter near the slider that makes the flame larger or smaller. Now, instead of flicking the striker with your your thumb, flip the lighter over and run the striker along a flat surface. This will cause many sparks to appear in quick succession and the toilet paper will ignite.
@brianhutchinson7863

That or kinda like the way magnesium stick are supposed to be used slowly rotate striker wheel avoiding making the particles ignite. Collect a quantity of the particles on the tinder fluff then spark the striker into the little pile of particles.

There are a few tricks to use an empty Bic lighter to start a fire. Like most things, it gets easier with practice. There are several bushcraft videos that will show you the methods. One such lighter trick was mentioned below. and here's another.. Take your pliers or a pry and remove the childproof guard. Hold the lighter upside down over your toilet paper, or another flat surface and slowly run the wheel several times to scrape some of the ferrocium rod (yes, that's it what makes the sparks) into pile. Once you have a decent amount, strike the lighter as normal. The sparks should ignite the ferro shavings/dust, and they will burn quickly, so have your tinder pile ready, Another trick you can do is to use the back of your knife and scrap off pieces of the lighter itself. This gives you more tinder in a pinch. From what I have found, doing that from the bottom works best. Once you have a pile of plastic shavings, do the same ferro scrape method as above and then strike the lighter as usual.
@Sprier
@Sprier 4 күн бұрын
Was searching for this comment, slow roll and get a little pile of shavings to then spark and use with your tinder 👌🔥

Matt - when ur lighter has no fluid, you need to scrape the flint slowly and build a pile, then ignite the pile with a spark from the lighter and it will take a minute to build them up, but it will ignite if done properly. You need to be slow and build it up without accidently making a spark otherwise your work will be burned up. I look forward to seeing you do this in the future.

When I've been hiking up in the mountains for trout fishing after getting a trout couldn't find any more bugs so I gutted the trout and use its intestines and that works but also sometimes you can find bugs inside the stomach of the trout and reuse that for bait and it works just great

For the lighter trick, you can start by spinning the flicker slowly without making a spark until you gather enough ferro dust. Then make a spark and when it gets caught by the ferro dust, it could create a more explosive spark that has more chance of making fire.

Hey Matts, my family frowns upon moving materials up a steep hill like you did for the firewood. We always bring a strong rope and tie up a big bundle of wood for example. Then you can safely climb the hill with your rope lead and pull it up. All it takes is one stumble and you'll be out of commission, be careful!

Something that helps with using the spark from an empty lighter is to grind a bunch of the flint into your tissue/tinder by slowly but firmly spinning the wheel over the pile then sparking into it. It takes a while to get a good pile going but it could save you if its all you have
