Diving for Rock Scallops Catch and Eat Raw - Sweet Creamy Delicious!

The ocean was finally calm enough to go for a dive. Luckily I brought my gear! I wouldn't recommend going alone like this, but if you can find some dive buddies, grabbing some rock scallops in shallow water is very satisfying! The limit is 10 per person, and they are one of the sweetest tasting things you can eat directly out of the ocean. Just double check the shellfish poisoning hotline to make sure they don't have elevated levels of heavy metals. Check weather conditions and count on it being murky. Don't get in unless conditions are right!

I am not sure this is necessarily a positive thing. This could get you in trouble you get comfortable diving alone, start taking more risks , deeper dives etc without much worry because you are feeling more confident and then a disaster happens. I hope that next time he would take a buddy with him for safety purpose.

This was a very great video! I do want to expand on the comment you made about “the orange splotches” and how they are a sign that scallops will be near by. The orange splotches we see are actually sponge (porifera). Like scallops, sponges are also heavy filter feeders so when you see an abundance of sponges it’s not uncommon to see scallops. It’s an indication that the area has optimal current to maximizes the amount of zooplankton and other microorganisms!

I used to do quite a bit of abalone and scallop diving. Matt, if you want to have more luck prying the scallops, get an iron that doesn't have the gage integrated. Also if you get one that has a slight (about 10 degree) bend incorporated about a third of the way down the iron, it makes it a lot easier to get the iron in a good position to pry the scallops off.

Thanks for the video ! I got a limit of scallops once many years ago by scraping the sides of a floating concrete dock with a floor scraper while holding a net below to catch whatever fell off. In retrospect it was probably not a legal way to get 'em but they were still delicious.

Shucking underwater is the way to do it. I use a home depot paint scraper but a lot of people use cake frosting spreaders. The technique is to get the scraper inside the shell before the scallop clamps down, if you do you are golden, and can even leave the tool there if you are low on air. Once it is in the scallop scrape the adductor muscle as close to one side of the shell as possible and then peel that side off. Shuck the other side like you did in the open ones in this video, but instead of tearing the adductor up it will come out whole. Then feed everything that isn't the white muscle back to the fish.

I would be scared sh*less diving by myself and foraging. Just reminds me of the story I read a few years ago of a guy in Mexico that was diving for some kind of seafood for his family and to sell. the population of sea urchin has really exploded and caused a lot of issues with depopulation in areas of other species. the kelp die off, and lower plankton counts remove alot of the fish and shellfish numbers. while i wouldnt like to see them destroyed on purpose, it would be beneficial if Cali would increase catch rates for them, or pay minor fees for them to remove them in certain areas. the fishing would improve alot.

Nice little haul. If you can find a piece of 2" rebar cut it to 2'8" long and use an angle grinder to shape a flat chisel point on each end. Tie a clove hitch loop in the centre with 3mm dynema for your attachment point. The weight of your bar will help alot with penetration when you spear in behind the scallop to pry. But always wear dynema gloves. And plastic fins are alot cheaper than those nice ones your using if your just going to beat them up on the rocks... I hope that helps you out brothr, enjoy!

Another tip for getting a wetsuit on is to put your feet in grocery bags, they will slip right through.

Go to harbor freight and pick up a small pry bar and wrap or spray the handle bright orange and there you go. The bar doesn’t have a bend allowing you to have leverage against the rock. GET A DIVE BUDDY!! Or a cameraman 😁

Hey brother, I love your videos. Not doing too much diving anymore than my older years. But when I did dive for scallops instead of prying them off shell and all I would use my fillet knife, slide it along the shell it would open right up I would reach in and take the meat and go to the next one.

Try a SLIDE HAMMER(a small one use to pull out dents on car) with a hook bar on one end and a chisel on the other end. A rope will attach to the hammer head, which can help you put more power. With this kind of hammer, you can hook and pull out any scallop in the hole.

Great video, I noticed that when you try to pry off the scallop you tend push the handle of the ab iron down. You might have more success if you pull the handle up. This will also be useful if abalone season ever opens up again, because you'll keep from tearing up the meat. Also, baby shampoo is a great way to keep your face mask from fogging up.

My grandma was a "Ama -san" in Kumamoto, they used a single hook (Nomi) chisle to pry the scallop off look up "the last ama" by VICE there some parts where you can see the tool, I would recomend trying to make one or find it for scalops, abalone, chonch it works great. Its more precise and has leverage than the tool you got there. Ive used it at low tide to pry oysters and gooseneck barneckles off the rocks. Saw something that may work on amazon Kakuri root hook on amazon it looks good enough.

Brother you need a small prybar for the difficult ones or my favourite is a wood chisel and hammer works a treat . Salty , sweet and creamy and they usually never make it home .

Matts, there is a product called Prid drawing salve that supposedly draws out splinters, thorns etc. in your skin. Worth a try to see if it draws out those sea urchin spines.
