You ever seen a whole bunch of the really big ones schooling up in a lake, and by big ones. I'm talking scales as big as silver dollars, and close enough to actually see the individual scales as I eased through the whole school. It was like nothing I'd ever seen before, and once upon a time I spent many many hours on the water around N. Texas. I never saw anything like it ever again, but that once was a sure enough make your heart feel like it was in your throat. There had to be hundreds of them, and they kinda come up to surface, but I never saw a single head, nor a tail on any of them, and I was mere feet away. They're sides that came into view were minimum of 12", and I never once saw the white on a single belly. They're backs had to be a good 8 to 10" across, and from the amount of actual body that showed, I would say every fish exceeded 6' easily without a doubt in my mind. Only they were a darker green, and that may have been, because of the water color that they were in. It was early spring time, because we were headed up to the north end of a local lake, to sling buzz baits, and spinner baits at some bass we'd located in a flooded creek in pre spawn situation. Was cursing along at just above idle speed, when they first started doing the thing where, they all kinda came up like you see a dolphin do down on the fairy to Crystal Beach. It was amazing, and kinda freaky at same time, and I remember thinking how huge they had to be. The thought of that many huge fish gathered together with a apparent place in they're collective minds as to where they were going, and with a definite purpose you could tell. Because they all were calm, all coming up above the surface the same way. None of them seemed to be frightened by my outboard, and each spread about the same distance apart. They covered quite a bit of water, and like I said, there had to be hundreds of them all relatively very close in size. Huge fish they truly had to easily surpassed 6' by a good bit,because I am sure I seen that much come out of the water, and I never saw either end of anyone of them. I don't know how big they have to be, but to have scales as large as what I saw, and based on fish I have caught 4' long, and they're scales weren't no where near that size. I agree with you on the fact that they shouldn't be fished to extinction, they've earned the right to live out their lives until they die of old age, and no one has the right to deny that right to them. They're not ravaging the bass populations, are any other species that I am aware of. If anyone knows what they're true feeding habits are, I'd be amazed to hear that they say different. Truly a ancient species like the great sturgeon up in the rivers up north. They have to be from the same time period from so long ago, they have probably been here long before man kind ever ever stepped foot on to the crossing between Russia and Alaska however many years ago that was. Simply amazing creatures

Yeah, what is the chum you're pitching? Is that Purina Carp Chow? oh wait after many searches I used the CC to find you said "range cubes". I never heard of such, despite some experience with livestock. Now I know what they are, so I gotta ask: What variety? Does it matter? Sometimes a big carp is fun-and we have no gator gars in TN--hydro-electric cooled the water too much for them. There were here before that. Good fishing man AND great daycare! not enough kids getting this exposure anymore.
@CatchingDinosaurs3 жыл бұрын
range cubes are just large pellets for cows and horse the only difference between them i have found is the percentage of added proteins, we had a ton big buffalo on the chum in the river on that trip

Guess you didn't feel my comment was worthy of a reply, that's fine if you feel that way. But I've no reason to make up something of this nature, no reason to, and I don't make a habit of telling whoppers as we use to call such things when I was a kid. I've fished for many years, and I've fished all over northeast Texas rivers and lakes alike. When I was younger it was catfish, crappie, sandbass for the freezer, but as I got older mainly bass fishing. Although I been known to cast into a school of sandbass, hybrids, and stripers if they showed themselves. What I said about the huge school of gar is nothing but the truth, a I remember it to this day like it was yesterday. Even though it's been over thirty years ago, and I still remember how quiet the water was. It was overcast spring morning, and the erie feeling I got watching them rise up to the surface like porpoise do. They'd surface right beside me, and they were all around the boat that I'd slowed to idle speed. They were almost within arms reach, and never seen the white on their belly's. Dark green matching the water on the north end of old lake Dallas before the 380 bridge. I can't tell you exactly how many, but they were everywhere around us, and they were all big fish. I'm talking you'd see 5 to 6 feet surface of they're bodies and never see head or tail either one, but the shear size of they're bodies were huge. I could actually see individual scales, and they were big as quarters on the green sides. They weren't in a hurry, nor did they show fear of the noise, are the boat itself, and they disappeared after about 5 minutes just as they appeared out of nowhere. They all of a sudden appeared at once like they were synchronized, and they disappeared from sight the same way after probably 100 yards. I've never seen anything like that ever again, but it's locked in my brain like the most important times in my life are, and no matter if anyone believes it or not. I know what I saw, and I know what they were, just as I can guesstimate how big they were, and I have never seen anyone catch any gar as big as these were. I've seen pictures of some of the ones caught long ago that resemble the size of the bodies I saw that morning, and they were huge fish in the old lake in the old river channel heading north towards the where the Trinty river runs into the north end of Lake Dallas
