In my first fishing foray of 2023, I head up into the mountains to fish a small creek. I had low, low expectations, but the fishing turned out to be awesome!

Hi tristan ive heard when the air temp is below freezing its extremely important to NOT take the fish out of the water. Reason being the cold air damages their gill filaments when wet.

I have fished in below freezing weather with both a rod and reel and tenkara. There are at least two advantages with Tenkara: no guides to ice up and no wet hands from stripping in the fly line.

Thanks for the review of the maxcatch triple zoom (smaller size). I just bought it and am excited to try it. I’ll probably have to wait for summer though. Seems fishing streams and rivers in Washington isn’t legal until May in most of them.

Yes, the MaxCatch shorter zoom is a nice flexible rod, but I like even better the Wild Water 7'-8' Shorty rod (only 2 lengths, but so flexible, and casts beautifully). The Shorty (in my opinon) is on par with the Tanuki Tenkara Pocket Ninja (7'10"), and $300 less, with similar flexibility. This creek looks too cold to be fishing, but once again, you were able to deliver in trying conditions!

@@TenkaraAddict It was a bust. The American Fork River was too overgrown and had almost no flow. I dropped down to the Provo River and it was the same thing. The Provo was so low that I jumped across it. It reminded me of Hobble Creek. And no fish.

you think that rod can handle a 10lb steelhead? Where I fish, the steelies range from 1lb to 20lbs but the average is about 3 to 5 lbs. In Ontario Canada. Great video btw... cheers!

Nice video. Cool to see you catch some bigger fish. I also need your help: I ordered the rod in the lengths you showed, but what I got is a rod showing 8'10'/9'9"/10'6" lengths. Do you know if it's the same rod you have? It feels a bit front heavy (pretty much so at 10'6) but otherwise seems ok. It's also nicely made. It came in a very solid case -- and, man!, is that top length thin! Does that jibe with your assessment of the rod?

Hey there! Thanks for all your videos! Very enjoyable to watch, every one! But I was wondering if you could explain where in the water column tenkara flies usually are. Do they float like a typical dry fly or are they subsurface? I know you don’t add weights so it’s not like your nymphing but I just don’t know where the fly is in the water column.

hey man ive been binging your content its great! ill be buying a tenkara rod very soon and id really like your feedback, im tall, i live in missoula montana. What tenkara rod would be a great versatile rod mid range price. do you recomend 3 zoom rods? ill probably be fishing rattlesnake creek a lot, its a blue ribbon trout stream but it feels small and shallow in many places. say 10-15 feet wide. i was looking at the dragontail rods. theres a lot of bigger rivers around here too and id like something that works in general. thoughts?

I know you fish traditional, subsurface Tenkara flies; I mostly use Tenkara to fish dries - I find it to be a superior delivery method, particularly in close quarters. I wonder how well one could fish, say, beadhead nymphs on Tenkara. I'm sure a lot of the castability qualities would be lost slinging a weighted nymph, not to mention if you add split shot to it.
@TenkaraAddict
@TenkaraAddict Жыл бұрын
There are tenkara rods that are well suited for fishing weighted flies. Lots of people do it.

Ian, I live in the Driftless and nymph probably 90% of the time and fish between 70-90 days a year. A lot of the Tenkara rods cast nymphs very well.

Depends on the body of water here in Utah. Some will close to protect spawning fish. Most are open year round however.

@@TenkaraAddict It is in the pools that the fish hang out in during the winter because the water is more moderate at depth. I was in Tennessee last Thanksgiving and found a pool in a small creek. I could see the fish and keep casting at them. The fly was over their heads, and they would budge. I then cast a small nymph, and the fight was on. It was a hit every time. You are right, if it is shallow, you have to stay high, but if there are pools, don't forget to get down there when it is cold.
