Today we are going to be doing a fishing challenge where I test the Texas Rig vs. the jig in the same situations to find out which one is better! These two bass fishing lures are often used interchangeably, especially around shallow cover like we are fishing around today! I have my own idea of which lure is going to win out, but you're going to have to watch to find out for yourself!

I fish alot with the same creature bait and I use the 4/0 trokar flipping hook. Its a hard plastic and I used to loose fish like you were in this video alot. A little trick that I learned is I bend the hook to off set it just a hair and I use the snell knot. My hook up ratio is way way better. It's day and night.

That’s a bacon. Dude. I’m just back to fishing after ten years of not even owning my own rod n reel. I’m 28 years old now, from Alabama and I grew ONLY fishing a Texas rig- soft plastic worm (Mellon or June bug color.) Period. Nothing else. Ever. It was just how my dad fished from how he was taught as he was growing up on the black warrior river here in central alabama. But now I’m grown and my son is coming of age. And so I’m learning new ways of fishing, when and where to use each type of lure and how it’s fished. And it’s been awesome learning from you Tyler, here on TRF. I just wanted to say thank you for your videos and really breaking down your knowledge of fishing to teach young and old as much as you can, while still keeping it interesting along the way. I wish you the best man. I hope to be able to pass this on to my kids. you’re handing down a great gift for everyone. God bless you for that. Really I do appreciate it. Please continue to study the fish and teach us how to aswell. Thank you Tyler. And everyone of your sponsors and family that support you.

I'm voting for jig gets you bigger fish less often, and creatures get bit more often... So it depends on the situation. I also go jigs for skipping docks/brush piles/cover and creatures for more open water.

I see your point. What about if the lake your fishing at is literally 6 ft deep all around? Lol. Should I use my medium rod for the Trig and jig? Or should I use a medium heavy or a heavy for the Trig and Jig?
@JohnVC
@JohnVC 2 жыл бұрын
@@dodgerblue2133 I would say if you're fishing open water just use a medium rod with a lightweight Texas rig. Usually a jig is better around structure... like rocks and brush, because stuff like crawfish doesn't hang out in open water. It depends on what your lake bottom is like.
@dodgerblue2133
@dodgerblue2133 2 жыл бұрын
@John C ok I was also thinking of sticking with the medium rod for light t Rigs. So you suggest I use a medium heavy for fishing jigs? Even if the water is only 6 ft deep? The bass there are really no more than 6 pounds
@JohnVC
@JohnVC 2 жыл бұрын
@@dodgerblue2133 A medium is fine for smaller jigs which will have smaller hooks. But if you're fishing a jig that's more than about an ounce with a larger gauge hook, it might be hard to set the hook with a medium rod, especially if there are weeds or brush. Personally if I'm taking one rod to the lake it's going to be a medium heavy with my baitcaster and 16 lb test. But that's just my preference.
@dodgerblue2133

There are many different kinds of bites and the feeling really varies depending on the type of bass and the mood of the fish. I can’t really make a video on what it feels like to get a bite, you just have to put time on the water and learn it for yourself. It eventually becomes muscle memory

Seems to me if you slow down and ease up on your hook-sets and rig the bait so the hook point becomes exposed easier, you won't miss all those fish. Use an offset shank EWG with the bait skin hooked, don't peg the weight, and don't set the hook so hard and fast. Thin wire hooks enable better hook point exposure as well. Same with the jig, you have to make that giant stiff weed guard thinner by clipping off several strands. Increasing your hook-up percentage when fishing any soft plastic with any hook is all about making sure the hook point becomes exposed easier, more (gap between bait and shank), smoother, and faster.

I've not seen your vids before today. I enjoyed it and will be watching more of them. I enjoy your enthusiasm, but you do talk really fast when you're explaing the details. For us older anglers (70ish) that is a tad bit hard to follow. That said, I continue to fish and try new baits and techniques to up my game. Pitching and Flippin is a fav always, second only to topwater frogging! Again good video! ENJOYED IT!

Try using a weight slide they make rubber ones that allow the weight to slide especially when setting the hook that bobber stop probably lost at least one of those fish.
@TylersReelFishing
@TylersReelFishing 3 жыл бұрын
I think I may try giving the weight like 2-3 inches to slide up the line before it hits the bobber stopper. Would still keep it compact but would increase hookups? Idk, worth a shot

I could tell you a water temperature range, but that really depends on the moon phase, sunlight, and length of day and time of the year. I’m sure there are videos out there that could teach you a lot more about the bedding cycle. I’m sure I even have some on my channel

I think the 1/8 on the creature bait and a 1/2 jig is not apples to apples. IMHO . Make them both the same weight. Whatever weight that might be . Just my 2 cents .

Not a true comparison as the t rig had a lot lighter weight 1/8 oz. It may have been the slower fall that triggered those bites... that said I do agree that t rigs get more bites in general... i also miss a lot more fish on t rig vs jig which was evident in your video... good stuff 👍
@TylersReelFishing
@TylersReelFishing 3 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree it could have been a better comparison. One thing you might not be thinking about though, is that the jig has more resistance with the skirt and trailer, and the creature bait has less resistance. So the fall is probably pretty similar between the two

I don’t think you can call one better than the other. They both work great. Fishing is situational and whatever the situation is one lure might work better than the other. You were fishing in like muddy water. A TX rigged creature bait at times actually works better in those situations than a jig. because of the profile it produces and water displacement from the lure. Now yes the jig is an awesome bait that catches big fish but it’s not a speedy catch and a lot times you have to methodically work it. So at the end of the day I really don’t believe you can actually call it. Because everything is situational. There is just to many variables to consider. Thanks please keep on making great videos.
