Official footage
We initally intended not to post the video, however as it was passed onto a reporter by a 3rd party (someone not linked to myself or the boat owner), we have decided to post the video in it’s edited form
Boat collided with us 9 miles out to sea. Nearly died. More details to follow soon
This happened last week, the whole story will be posted later on and I will go through all details

The commercial fishing vessel was definite on AUTO PILOT - there should have been at least one crew member on watch at the helm. ( I know i have worked on them ) .. Great to see you survived this accident Jake & your buddy, that was one very very close call. Personally i would have jumped overboard well before getting hit - the smaller vessel was busy fishing and while anchored up so only spotted the approaching commercial boat at the last min. No time to start the engine and avoid the collision. Lesson learned. I have had the same happen to me years ago with a sail boat that was to my port side then turned suddenly - the skipper could not see over his £2million pound boat's cockpit of a very large and long OCEAN sailor but a serious accident was avoided when a little lad saw us on that boat and screamed to the captain who just turned enough to miss our stern end by few feet. We were nearly T - boned by a brand new £2 million sail boat made of aluminium. Just goes to show that being on anchor needs full observation of other vessels under power in the nearby vicinity. Thank goodness Jake and his buddy survived this.

well as a trawler skipper who fished bigger and smaller vessels this video should serve as a lesson for anyone in a small boat, never take it for granted that a boat on a collision course has anyone looking out the windows, that little boat, regardless of the collision regulations should have already been prepared to get out of that scallopers road , never just leave it to the other boat to see you and take evasive action, be pro active and prepared, might is right.

Mate back in the 90's a used to be a FRC COXSWAIN on a standby boat for Boston & putfords out of Lowestoft, this sort of thing would happen couple of times every trip always foreign beamtrawlers steaming for the installation while fishing no one on watch, or if they were they would refuse to answer on ch16 they also liked to try and swipe the beam trawl close to the well heads honestly mate absolutely deadly at times we always reported them never anything done about because trip after trip would be the same Belgium beamers steaming through the gas fields . I'm so glad they just waved and yelled instead of moving the boat. That way we could experience the damage from boat crashes. Not as bad as you would think they would be. This probably would be worse if the back of the boat got hit and the big ship ramped up into the small one.

HOLY fuck!!!! I was sh1tting myself watching that. Thankfully you are safe. This is why I am an advocate of having my lifejacket/vest on at all times with my portable radio attached. Here's a hint that might help ... next time you see a trawler bearing down on you from a few hundred metres away ... move. When it looks possible it might be on a collision course, start the engine, just in case. When you do finally decide it is a problem .. just let go of the rods and get out of there. Wear a PFD at all times.

10 knots seems realistic, 100m takes 20 sec - they didn't have a lot of time and were trying to pull a fish in so probably quite focussed at 1 - 2m from their boat.

Here's another hint: vessel under way should keep a watch, including for anchored angling vessels. It is staggering how people can focus the responsibility for this on the small vessel that was anchored and run down by a vessel under way that was clearly not keeping watch.

I feel both parties in this have questions to answer. The beamer is definitely at fault no question in my mind about that. Steaming like a ghost ship, with no man on watch. No point in having radar, AIS, VHF, chart plotters etc, if there’s no one watching them and that’s at night. In this case in broad daylight on a flat calm sea, all was needed was someone to look out of the wheelhouse window. You’re lucky she wasn’t fishing with her beams out, in which case you’d have all been fkd😕

When the collision occurred, it rocked the larger boat and sounded like a bomb i'm sure. If someone had been in the wheelhouse, they would have looked out a window at some point. The trawler was certainly at fault if the recreational boat was anchored. That being said, you guys should have been getting out of the way when the trawler didn't alter course at 3mi. They obviously weren't maintaining a proper watch on the trawler. This serves as an example of when a boater can actually be dead right. A couple of feet difference in the heading on the trawler would have left yall in the water. One final suggestion would be to have a radio on channel 16, and hail such a vessel in the future if there is any doubt about their intentions in a meeting, or passing situation.
