Ad to your list; 1. Maintain your engine 2. Have a small backup outboard 3. Have a spare anchor with line ready to go not stowed below. 4. Have fenders ready to deploy, they are tougher than your leg, and far less expensive to destroy. 5 Some professional training is always good.

Amen, brother. I owned boats large and small most of my life and lived in Boca Raton. BEFORE I took friends out through Boca Inlet I instructed them on what not to do if we got into trouble. Thank God I never had a major problem but that may be because I maintained the boat and had all the "oh crap" equipment ready to use in a moment's need. Watching some of these people fumble with lines, anchors, etc. may be comical but it is extremely dangerous.

When you see people with no life jackets who can't swim, launched from boats in big waves and fast currents like this spot, their chances of survival are minimal unless they are got to quickly. A small child would have no chance. Millions of people round the world need help keeping safe, as they don't have the awareness to do it themselves. I have been in Eastern South Florida all my life. Born In Ft. Lauderdale grew up on Singer Island (NORTHERN PALM BEACH COUNTY).My father bought me my is boat when I turned 13. The boat was a 15 ft. Rivera with a 50hp Mercury. Dad was not interested in fishing, however I was not permitted to take that boat anywhere until I passed the 8 week boating course. Of course the was done immediately and I was living the dream at 13. I never ran into any major problem. When I turned 16 he asked if I wanted a new boat or a car? That was a no brainier for me. I was blessed with a 20 ft. Grady White with a Mercury 150hp Black Max. By now we a huge dock with boat lift and everything 1/2 a mile from the Palm Beach inlet (Named on the charts a lake worth inlet). Yes my father was wealthy, but he wanted results after high school. So off to the military (Navy)i went. Since the Grady White I have had 6 boats since I sold the Grady in some where around 1980 , I am now 62 years old. Yes i had to pay for the last 6 boats i have owned. THE BOTTEM LINE AS I SEE IT DOWN HERE IS MANDITORY LICENSING AND AT LEAST HAVE A LICENSED BOAT CAPTIN .(COMERCIAL CAPTIN BE THE FINAL STEP IN THE LICENSING PROCESS.JUST LIKE automobile licensing. I never thought I would I would say this but it is incredibly insane down here. Currently I do not have a boats but many of my friends do I get my share of calls saying YO you want to go off shore and do a little live bait kite fishing? Still living the dream.at 62 years of age. I told them that ""TOY BOATS were TOWED BEHIND TOYOTAS & that if you were up under the deck of a Bayliner, you could SEE THE OUTILNE OF THE 4 FOOT NEON LAMP IN THE SHOP, probably not too good for standing on, especially if any one was over 200+ pounds in their group & another way to test the overall quality of a boat & its fixtures was to just go into the show room & grab onto the bow rail & try to pull yourself up & into the boat, IF THE RAIL CAME OFF, HAND IT TO THE SALESMAN & TELL HIM HIS PRODUCT SUCKS & ASK HIM HOW YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO GET IN TO THE BOAT OUT ON THE WATER IF THE BOW RAIL BREAKS THAT EASY RIGHT HERE IN THE SHOW ROOM!! Around 3-4 years later, YAMAHA came out with an add that showed their whole boat being picked up and just left hanging in mid air with a crane & rope HOOKED TO THE BOW RAIL, imagine that!

What clusterf*cks. 18:20 is the worst of them trying to handle lines. The lines come out of the locker tangled and it’s only made worse by the person who has no idea what to do with it. No one can properly coil and throw a line. If you’ve got a $50k+ boat it would make sense to learn how to protect that asset by being prepared for when something goes wrong. Sad.

What is this boat doing on the rocks?

I’m no expert…but I’ve owned boats all my life. I’ve had boats in rough unintentional situations such as a having to ride out a thunderstorm or two. The inlet is navigable if you use power and trim. Learn to read and ride the swells, know when to power through or ease back. 80% of these boat owners shouldn’t be allowed on the water the way they operate.
