Fishing Challenge: Can I HANDLINE a SALMON from a KAYAK?

Ok. This is a little ridiculous, but still fun. A while ago I picked up a piece of driftwood off the surface of Puget Sound and carved it into a handline. I was thinking about how I could safely catch a fish with it and summer coho came to mind. So, I set out with the handline, a shallow diver, and a hoochie only to hook up with a probably-keeper sized blackmouth (resident king salmon). The season was open, but I didn't even bring my rod, which has a 22" mark on it. So, I released it to be safe.

I really enjoy watching your videos, and also feel your channel is totally under rated. I have a suggestion that may help bring more subs. Go to some popular channels related to Puget sound/NW fishing and reply those top threads, which will bring attentions from those folks enjoying the same and may click your channel for curiosity. The other thing you may consider is adding Puget Sound or northwest to the name of your channel. I feel people living in the NW area tend to be more interested in your fishing adventures.

Thank you for the kind words about the channel! I have been thinking about rebranding a bit. The current title is a little too off the wall. I honestly didn’t think it would get as much traction as it has and didn’t put much thought into it. Good suggestion about posting on popular fishing channels. I hadn’t thought about that.

It’s a decent spot. People are already fishing from shore there. It basically gets really deep just off shore by the point.

That would have been a good call. This time I just let out about 100’ of 50lb mono to create stretch. I’ve heard those are a good idea though.

What size diver are you using?

I wouldn’t call this model fishing lol. But it was the 70’ type. My thinking was that fish tend to move down in the water column as it gets later in the day. I caught a chinook which, possibly, suggests that 70’ was deeper than necessary for coho. They do cohabitate, so who knows. Thanks for watching!
