new sub and congrats. I'm on the same mission. 16 ft yamaha skiff. Gotta learn more about these tides and currents. Much respect!

Thanks! Now’s the time! Try the edges of any underwater humps in the strait with herring. You’ll get one!

@@kayakfishingpnw How long are you able to be out there? 2 hour slack tide? I've been out in a bigger boat, but I really want to time it right and try it in my skiff.

I tend to go HARD. I was out from 8 am to 7 pm that day. It took me over 6 hours to catch that fish. Then i had to battle tidal currents all the way back to bay. Then dropped down to catch a couple lings and rockfish. I burned more calories than I gained on this one lol.

@@kayakfishingpnw damn I'm just trying to run out and snag all the rockfish I can while the water is flat. I'm hoping to try it this summer.

Thanks! This was the only time I’ve ever tried it. So these were the only fish I’ve ever caught on it. I’ve heard they are effective with most large bottom fish, though. The season opens up again next week. I can say it will be part of my rig.

Have you fished near seal and sail rock before?

Fairly close. I’m usually targeting halibut when I’m in the strait so I’ve hit the hump northwest of seal rock a few times. Looking at a bathymetry map those look like great lingcod and rockfish spots. Are there halibut around there?

Hey! Congratulations! Seems like the perfect size halibut for a kayak 😃 Things got pretty crazy in the net, would be scary to try handling a bigger one out there. Pretty sure my parents said they bring a harpoon in case they get a big one? You go harpooning a giant halibut in a kayak, you either die or end up with a million subscribers afterwards lol

Ya. I was planning on netting anything under 20 lb., humanly dispatching anything 20-40lb without removing it from the water alive, and releasing anything over 40lb. But after this experience I do think a 40 pounder would be pretty hard especially with those swells.

@@kayakfishingpnw was your kayak moving as much as it seemed in the video when you had it netted alongside your boat? Seemed like it was rocking ya pretty good but cameras can be deceiving!

I have camera mounted on a pole that’s pretty easy to flex. So the pole probably added whip to it. But it was surprisingly strong for its size and i definitely got rocked by it a bit.
